Can anyone share experience with prop/makeup blood and lav mic usage? I start a feature soon where there will be a good amount of this on actors faces and clothes. I'm told the blood will wash out completely from clothing. I'm just curious if any out there would simply forgo lavs at all in these scenarios, or would think their lavs might come out fine on the other end of the shoot. Should I ask production to agree to replace any lavs if they are ruined? Is this something they should expect? I use COS-11s and Sonotrims mainly. I've got a B3 lying around somewhere that I might be willing to sacrifice. Also a nude Tram-50. Any tips/tricks/ideas are greatly a…

I worked on a Sony video music shoot yesterday. I counted 8-9 DSLRs! The reason was there could have been 10 DSLRs if you count the on-set photographer too. They even had DSLRs set up on the roof to run time-lapse. An enormous amount of people working in the camera department. I sat behind the video village which fed 5 of those DSLRs for the director for real time cutting.. It was amazing. I only had one slate though, but they were all able to get the cameras into spots to all get the slate at each take. I even fed TC to the 35 track ProTools recorder that they were using. Hard to see.. but this was one of the cameras attached to a 50 foot jib. I said a…

My boys love this movie, and I've seen it several times with them, along with The Incredibles. WALL-E is on ABC Family right now, and I still can't get over how stunning the sound design is. If you haven't seen either of these movies, I highly recommend them. Not only are they fantastic sounding movies, they are extremely well done overall, and fun.

I'm thinking of using a Ribbon Mic for voiceover on a feature that I am currently working on. Anybody here experience with ribbons used for this? What I'm looking for is that warm and silky sound (Nat King Cole, Sinatra and so on) Also microphone preamp... Witch type and brand... //Christian

I would love to hear from any of our people in the UK about Elstree Studios --- is it still there, still in business? I was just remembering one of my first trips to England in the mid-1970's when I had only been mixing for a few years and I wanted to visit a studio and speak with re-recording mixers, learn about how things are done in England and so forth. I was so impressed with the kind treatment I was given --- the studio sent a car to my hotel, picked me up and took me out to Elstree, gave me a full tour of the studio and then walked me into one of the big dubbing stages and introduced me to Bill Rowe. Now, here I was, a virtual nobody from the US, with Bill Rowe tak…

I just finished a tv pilot and the character often was wearing a T shirt with a a cowboy style shirt on with snaps on it and then a heavy leather jacket with lots of zippers which during the show is in various stage of being zipped out and unzipped. When everything is fully zipped up and buttoned up the only place i could put a lav was up near the neck of his T-shirt which sounded ok considering position however when the jacket is open and the cowboy style shirt is not fully buttoned all I hear is the jacket and the shirt. Also in a number of scenes he is getting things out of his pockets. Beyond getting production to change his costume what else could I have done to ge…

Hi: I was just hired for a shoot this weekend using the Arri Alexa. They plan on shooting at 23.976. I am recording on my SD 744T, I will also be using a Denecke TS3 slate (overkill). I have never worked with this camera. My question is what are the best settings on both the camera and the recorder to synch the TC? Is one better at being the Master clock, I saw some technical discussion on another board that suggests an issue with drop frame rates with the Alexa... Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Just looking for some stories here. I just watched a TV episode I mixed earlier this year. There was one very soft and conversational scene between two actresses sitting a little under 2 ft apart on a park bench. The location was so loud with downtown Los Angeles 6th street traffic at rush hour. We never actually saw the traffic, of course. There were a number of times that the actors didn't even hear each other for their cues, because the scene had them looking forward mostly, and not at each other. We were in a parking lot, dressed as a NYC park, with tall buildings on 3 sides amplifying the street noise. The traffic/bus noise was incredible, not to mention the…

Hi All, What term do you use to describe when talent needs to clear their throat and have a drink of water? In my parlance the term has always been "froggy", as in, "you sound a little froggy." It's occurred to me recently that this isn't necessarily the best thing to say to an actor. How are y'all putting that?

I need a lightweight program/app for OSX and PC that will play our .wav files with stamped timecode. Apparently quicktime pro shows timecode, but only for videos. Any one know of a piece of software to play TC encoded .WAVs? FCP does but that software is not easy to come by for free. I need it simply for reporter/producer types who want to listen to track and create simple EDL from audio file.

I just purchased a new Deva 16, paid cash outta my account. (Nothing wrong with my 5.8 I just wanted two.) Zaxcom sent it UPS. As soon as I learned this I had a bad feeling in my stomach. In the past it's been a miracle if a UPS box arrives un-dented, they NEVER require a signature when it's supposed to be required, and they always come really late in the day. They lost my new Deva 16. And they listed it as delivered at 4:10pm today! I wasted the whole day waiting around and checking the online UPS shipment tracker, then at 4:25pm I check and suddenly it's listed as delivered. But I was home the whole day in the front room right next to the door: no one knocked,…

Hi: I am fairly new to this, but am starting to get regular paying gigs. I was wondering what the normal industry standards are for contracts, payment, and deliverables? For example, is a written contract normal or just a verbal agreement? Do you normally get paid cash or check and is that at the end of the day or net 30 days from invoicing (or some other arrangement)? Do you deliver the sound files at the end of the day, end of shoot, after getting paid, etc...? Thanks for your help. Mike

Here's a fun one. Go to google books and look up Alfred Morgan. He was my favorite author when I was a kid (see picture below... ), but read his 1910 attempt to describe what radio was and how it worked. It all seemed to revolve around 'the ether'. Fun history.. Billy Sarokin PS, my apologies to the other half for the title

Is this a good idea? Are there any legal problems behind it? It has been almost 3 months and I have not received a 4 digits payment. I think if we start collecting information on flaky clients : First we can avoid them, Second they might start actually paying. Please do not attack my idea. I am a little angry while writing this. Have not got paid a good amount of money. And also have not worked since the elections ended.

Hi all. Today I found some Lectrosonics on Ebay. R400 Rm2 . Says it is a dual Rx with 2 LMA Txs My question is after looking on the Lectro site,is this an older type unit? I don't see a dual system there, just a single rack mount unit. Also has anyone heard of Tour Supply Co. in New York. what is making me feel a little uneasy is they have several units up for sale and they all say "ordered for client , opened but never used " They asking $1500 for the system. any input or experience with this type unit would would be appreciated. Thanks all Tom

I read this the other day and thought it was a great piece: Securing the Washington Monument from terrorism has turned out to be a surprisingly difficult job. The concrete fence around the building protects it from attacking vehicles, but there's no visually appealing way to house the airport-level security mechanisms the National Park Service has decided are a must for visitors. It is considering several options, but I think we should close the monument entirely. Let it stand, empty and inaccessible, as a monument to our fears. An empty Washington Monument would serve as a constant reminder to those on Capitol Hill that they are afraid of the terrorists and what t…

I was wondering if any innovators found an alternative for the colour-coded plastic cap for our lectro tx whip cables, sth which I very often lose on the field and talents complain that the copper wire is poking them. it seems expensive to buy the remote audio replacements when all I really want is the plastic caps..

I created a Facebook Page, since I consider all colleagues and fellow soundies friends, please "like", if you do that sort of thing. It's not my personal page, just my audio page and what I work on, updates. And of course, I will reciprocate, if you have one also! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Audiofile-Sound/164563513579704 Thanks

Unofficial poll: It is widely known that directors like Orson Welles, and Alfred Hitchcock were the masters of the camera shot. These masters saw it in their heads, and did whatever it took to make the audience understand what the characters 'felt' to the audience, using the Shot. What do you guys think is the best camera shot ever? I'm not asking a style shot like 'long lens or shaky cam', but a shot from a film that conveys the maximum amount of 'words' with out actual saying anything. So, with this in mind.. here's my top 3. #1) Cashback (Sean Ellis). The single shot showing our heros level of depression, in his break up with his girlfriend. The sing…

I hear rumors that the camera guild may give up their contractual 10 hours turnaround. Local 52 gave that up already. It takes me 2-3 hours round trip to get to and from work. Do the math. After a 14 or 15 hour day, I'm a danger on the road. With only 5 or 6 hours sleep and a 14 hour day, I approach weapon status in a car. We now usually get 10 hours only because of the camera union contract. Soon, only 9 hours for everyone, which will mean we will have to function on 4 or 5 hours sleep. Anybody hear anything about this? Any ideas on how to lobby for sticking to 10 hours? -- Jan

So, given my limited inventory, would I do best to use (or combination of): Sennheiser MKH60 Oktava MC012 Shure SM58 Sony ECM77 I also have quite a few other models of "handheld" mics. Any suggestions? Tom
