So I have bought a lot of my gear from members of various forums over the years with a simple wire transfer. I always felt safe doing this because the people were usually contributing members of the forum and audio community, who wouldn't risk their reputation on ripping someone off. How can I safely buy something from someone I don't know? I know there is paypal, but I hate it and it takes too long to transfer. I remember seeing a thread somewhere (maybe not here since I can't find it) about various companies that will do the transaction for you. Can you still do C.O.D.? What companies do people recommend? If anyone has experience with a company that can h…

This posted by Eric Goldstein on facebook. I always find these things fascinating, to listen to the elements recorded that get mixed into the final song we all know. Talk about the "sum of the parts" and the "whole" and all that, NONE of the parts seem to be even able to create the whole, but they do. Don and Crew and I all did the the Rolling Stones concert movie ("Let's Spend the Night Together") and when I stepped into the Record Plant Remote truck and listened to Mick's vocal track solo to the monitors, it was horrifying --- put into the whole mix for the concert --- brilliant! "Gimme Shelter" the whole is so much greater than the parts

Hi All We all know about the digital transition that occured in the USA, effective 12 June 2010. AFAIK, Canada will also transition, effective 31 August 2011. Is any other country or subcomponent scheduled for a transition that will affect available wireless frequencies? If so, what is the effective date? TIA Ray

I work with a production company in Minneapolis and they want to purchase a voice over booth for their new office. I'll be the one doing the recording so I certainly have a vested interest in this thing. Our current office has a massive (overly constructed) VO booth that I built and it works quite well. But, we're moving to new offices for the next 12-18 months before buying a new building. So, in the mean time we need a very good VO booth that is easy to setup and then torn down and transported a year from now. We can't do a build-out in the new office space for various reasons. I'm thinking either the double walled Whisper Room, something by GK Acoustics, Industrial…

I wanted to bring up this topic as in the last year or two it's become more and more of a way some clients start communication for a job. Last week I noticed a thread on a TV cameraman board The new terrible: Texting assignments, no followup. While that is a more of a complain-type thread and fairly related only to news type work assignments it prompted the idea to start a thread. Some regular clients send a text message asking if you are available for a certain date which seems fairly fine when you have already an established relationship and rate with them. This works well when you can reply with a text message to put a day or two on hold. I may ask them to u…

So I have, for the first time, the opportunity to sit-in on a post production mix session for a documentary series I mixed and would like to ask for a little advice from the group here regarding studio etiquette. This would be my first time entering a professional studio as more of a client than a freelancer. I have some specific ideas regarding the VO track and how it may be mixed/eq'd to better match the voices in the verite portion of the show. As it stands now the VO track is a bit over the top and too bass-heavy. For example on some playback systems the narrator feeds into the sub and makes things in the room vibrate. I find it distracting. So, that's an ex…

Hey everyone, I finally got the courage to ask a question, after lurking around and reading posts from others. I was hoping some people can offer some of their experiences with this situation. Just a little background info about myself. I'm 23, fresh out of college in the LA area, building my bag + (cart one day), as well as trying to gain as much experience/connections as possible. I got offered to do a gig no pay, but the producers have worked on bigger movies that seem to be on the up and coming. Art coordinators and production managers etc. Maybe I can get hired to do something bigger if I do a good job. But there is another gig that pays, but the produc…

As someone who does a wide variety of jobs from reality shows to long format work and everything in between I have been struggling recently to stay organized while being compact I also have not been flying as much as I use to and wanted to eliminate my heavy storm cases Since many weeks one day I may be doing simple to camera interviews while the next I may be doing a commercial I usually spend 15-20 minutes packing and unpacking gear for every job which has gotten old so I decided this week I was going to do something about it. I also just have an SUV and really don't want a van to drive around in or a trailer to haul. So I decided to go the Stanley Fat Max route that ma…

I am trying to clarify some personal history. I visited my father working on a Chevy commercial shooting at the Chevy Chase Country Club. I would like someone who knows Chevys to tell me what model year this Chevy is; I think '56 or '57? What I do remember about the day was that it was when I first became aware of dulling spray --- while they were lighting, my father walked over with a spray can and put just a dab of dulling spray on the front bumper. I remember as well that a heated discussion ensued afterwards, between my father and what I now know must have been ad agency/GM executives. The whole shoot, by the way, was top secret and they kept the car covered up until …

" in the biggest pro camera store in xxx the other day and one of the guys told me they have never sold so much “audioâ€ gear as they do now with the DSLR fad. Azden, Audio Technica, Zoom, cheap Sennheiser etc. All low end stuff being sold to the new do it yourself crowd of DSLR “artistsâ€ who think that prosumer audio and Plural Eyes makes more sense than hiring a sound person. " yeah, I know we have frequently discussed this, but the quote puts several recent and current topics together in a succinct nutshell. The operative thought process is: if the wunder-cam costs so little for such "great" pictures and even records sound, then I don't need much m…

Just a quick Hi to introduce myself, then back to lurking and reading. Thanks for being here with such a great board. Glad to make a donation. I've already learned a lot! I'm a composer/sound designer, audio-post engineer, and budding Field/Location guy. Been in the studio/post side of the world since 1988. ProTools/Logic Certified. Never too late to teach an old dog some new tricks, and am very grateful to have a few A-list location mentors up here in Seattle to learn from. I put together a nice little kit (SD 302/702T, etc..) to help some friends with their 5D shoots, and am totally digging learning and doing more. Love being in my studio doing post, and l…

Hi, The thought has often occurred to me - would it be possible to set up a mobile edit suite? As far as the equipment goes, it is easy to set up a pro tools rig in a rack mount case. Monitors and stands (5.1 surround monitoring) could also be made travel friendly. What about acoustics? Given a decent hotel room, with control over HVAC etc, quiet space, is it feasible to carry a set of damping pads, bass traps etc., and do a check on the room (pink noise, etc) and set up some acoustic treatment in such a space? Just a thought... (considering some of the "studios" that people have nowadays where they are doing film post work... heh...) -vi…

I know its been hashed many time before by a lot of you. Just wanted to say something about them. My small kit is made up with 4 radio mics, 416 , pole, 442 and 702T. Most of the work I am getting is corporate , interviews at trade shows and seminars etc. Carrying the bag and 1 rolling case got to be a challenge going from Chicago's maze of underground parking and what seems like miles to the hotel's ballrooms. I've read numerous posts here comparing PSC'c cart to FilmTool's vertical cart with adding SKB cases. I went with the PSC cart, all I can say is why did I not do this years ago? What a treat to have everything with you, at your fingertips , especially when they pul…

Posted over on facebook, this video talks about the development of a car that runs on compressed air. Of course we don't know if this really works, of course we know that some energy is needed to compress the air, etc., etc. The point is, there are brilliant people and lots of companies working on these things but most of them are NOT here in this country nor are they Americans. We are so firmly entangled with big oil and use of fossil fuels, it may never happen here. Our great Universities are also held in the stronghold, prevented from even doing any meaningful research on these alternatives. Research on how to make what we are doing now work better, of course. Research…

Hi, So... I am a stills guy who is breaking into the video market with the AF100. I don't take "Client" projects, everything is self-funded so no risk of annoying clients =) I'm okay with video/audio software mixing on an amateur level. But, I don't know anything about what equipment i need for my own stuff. I think audio recordists are absolutely necessary for bigger jobs than one man bands, but right now it would just be me and one assistant. We're going to be traveling around Europe so the equipment needs to be light. There would be little to no dialogue, location ambient sounds (airports, resturaunts, outside) which I would want to "enhance" by layering…

Wouldn't it be great if this could actually work in our world? "Antares Audio Technologies released Mic Mod EFX, a $159 microphone modeling audio plug-in available for RTAS, VST, and Audio Units. Featuring models of over 125 microphones, including classic and exotic models, the plug-in makes it possible to use a specific mic model for each track in live performance, studio recording, or post-processing. According to Antares: "One simply tells Mic Mod EFX what microphone they are actually using and what microphone they'd like it to sound like. Audio is first processed through a "Source Mic" model which serves to neutralize the known characteristics of the inp…
