I was wondering if anyone knew who the sound mixer was on this feature that's coming out in October. It sounds really good, and it looks like a great film. http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/sony/insidejob/

So what I want to do actually is run my daily applications off my USB drive or iPod. And I know that PortableApps suite can solve the problem, but partly. Because applications like MS Office and Adobe seems not portably available. So I want to know if you know some virtulization software or any other way that I can run almost all applications off a USB drive or iPod, I know it may sounds a little uncommon but I just need it. Can you help me?

Here's a link to a hosiery organizer I thought might be good for belt & pouch kits. Found it while searching for hanging shoe racks for possible use in stage-based Comtek distribution (thanks to whomever posted about this not so long ago: great idea). -- Jan

According to a report in Variety, the cry babies at the three networks are upset that HBO won so many trophies in the Mini-Series category. They swept all eight longform awards. So rather than get back into the mini-series business and seriously compete, they'd rather banish that category to the Creative Arts night, or create a separate "Mini-Series" Award to play on HBO. http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=Emmy&articleid=VR1118023530&categoryid=2161&cs=1&cs=1

Do you work simply as yourself, or under the name of a business? When I started doing this I started up an LLC because people kept telling me I needed to keep my business and personal assets separate, mainly so if anyone ever tried to sue me for personal reasons, they couldn't take my sound gear, or if someone sued me for professional reasons, they couldn't take my personal assets (although I literally own nothing but my truck and my Playstation and the clothes in my closet). It's kind of a pain in the ass though. When I get paid, I can't just use that money for, say, my rent or my car insurance, because the money technically belongs to the business. So I have to cu…

Notice a lot of you have excellent web sites and have been exploring them with interest. Exploration (as usual) generated inspiration, and I've revisited my own site and résumé with more questions than answers. Removed my address from the résumé - don't want to publish online w/address. Based upon what a few of you have done, crafted a paragraph-long "professional statement" and debate whether to place @ top or bottom if at all. Debate whether to include the second "reviews" page with the original response to résumé requests. Folks have said some nice things and I've an impulse to share them... Overkill? Hubris? There's room on this page to include a brie…

I'm very strongly considering relocating, thanks to a pretty marked lack of work, or at least of the paying kind. I know I haven't got nearly as much time, experience, or money invested in my gear as a lot of guys, but I certainly have enough that the amount of work I'm getting and the amount of money I'm making for it are pretty much unacceptable. I absolutely can't afford to pay even my basic monthly expenses and lately have been living almost exclusively off borrowed money. I'm about to get slapped with a four-figure repair bill on my crapola truck and it's really got me steeled to find some better options. Now I know that times are tough everywhere, especially…

After I ranted about the market being flooded with clue-less newbie producers, because the entry level was now too low, someone told me, "Don't worry, the cream of the crop will rise to the top. It always does." "Unfortunately", I stated "..the rest of us working professionals in this business, will simply just drown in the broth until then..." -Richard

Right before a scene today, one of the wardrobe girls drops a wad of paper towels on the desk I was sitting. Sorry, she said, the actress went to the restroom, forgot she was mic'd up and splash went the pack transmitter, mic and all. Tried bringing it back to life but apparently the toilet was "Flushed" and pretty much put the kibosh to that transmitter.. The production company was more than gracious in replacing it and the young lady was very apologetic. No worries, just a good story to tell.. Sure someone has a topper!

Slightly out of context on it's own, but James Cameron he was talking about how going to the next level of "sensory" presentation (as in 4D presentations in theme parks with smell and motion) will be distracting. He commented on surround sound often being misused and taking people out of the movie. "You don't want to break the spell. That's why anything that distracts you, and makes you aware of being in a movie theater versus focusing your attention onto the story is a negative." This is what I believe, and what we must convince the new generation of filmmakers to be true. Bad sound, inferior image, poor camera work, will all distract the audience from your s…

Hi all, I would like to get my fellow brothers input, dealing with being a member of 695. During these dismal economic times how many of you are fully paid up on dues? What other ways are you working to pay your monthly bills and keep current on dues? The work has been slow for most of us. (Anyone disagree?) I believe many of us would like to hear about issues you've had and how you resolved them. Bud

I just received my letter from IATSE Local 52 that my application has been accepted an I am scheduled for the Sound Examination on August 21st. What types of things should I expect to see on there? I have heard virtually nothing about the test, and a search on here has turned up little recent information. Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Marc

Helo, My name is Jon Lillie. I am a film student in Orange County, CA. My chosen field of study is audio, specifically on location recording/production sound mixing. I am hoping that one of you in the LA area would be kind enough to allow me to come to a set and watch how it is done on a professional set versus a student set. If you would like to start up a dialogue post here, or email me at jonlillie@gmail.com. Thank you for your time, Jon

Just went to my first dialog predub session today. It was really great, and in the amazing facilities at WB post sound (stage 9). It was just one reel, but so cool to witness. I tried not to get in the way, asking a few questions here and there. Watched them "audition" a couple of ADR lines against the production tracks. Watched how they integrated loop group and added dialog into the mix with EQ and other effects. The pros at WB made it seem so easy. A couple of American cast-members replaced some of their foreign dialog to improve their accents, which they didn't have time to do before production began. It was beautifully cut into the scenes I saw. I have o…

Just curious, is there a thinner version of the k-tek coil xlr cable available on the market? I'm actually trying to DIY a internal cable into my Ambient boom pole, but the first segment of the pole is just too narrow for a k-tek coil to run in smoothly, resulting in excess at the bottom, and i cannot keep my pole fully. and the connections to the xlr plug at the bottom keeps breaking:@ or should i just buy a proper k-tek boom pole since the connections keeps breaking.

Being new to production sound, I was wondering what percentage of production sound is actually used in feature films. I know that re-recording mixers will often bring in the talent for ADR a lot of the times. But from all of our hard work as sound mixers, how much of that is going to be used for the final product, versus ADR?
