http://good4sound.com/images/Solar_HomeLess_small.jpg I was on my way over to Electronic City in Burbank to grab some small items, and I ran across this homeless guy. I noticed a simple awesome cart set up, and a sign posted to his shirt that says, "FLAT BROKE". So I had to stop and ask him some questions. "Where did you get those solar panels?". He says, "The Internet". So, then I asked him, "How many watts do you generate?". And he says, "about 65 watts". Then he added in ".. it powers my laptop, cellphone, and wireless iPod headphones". Ok, I guess I got my answer then!! Wow.. Only in LA! -Richard

So, I'm sitting here watching Wipeout getting some good laughs from the many crashes, hits, and spills, but am curious as to how they went about wiring the mic in the helmets from the wet conditions. It looks like they're using the Lectro MM400c's or similar on the back of the helmets to deal with the wet conditions, but for the abuse... I see a lot of direct hits to the transmitter and wonder how many of these units they go through in a season lol?

Anybody know of a rental house in Hamburg Germany where I could rent a boom pole. The airline seems to have lost mine with my luggage. Thanks.

Hi Folks! I'm Tony Muricy, from Rio de Janeiro, and I'll be travelling in the US, Canada and Israel shpooting a brazilian doc about Capoeira in the world. When I travel here in Brazil, usually I carry inside the plane with me a SD 788T recorder, in a portabrace, togheter with 2 to 4 wireless mikes and it's antennas in the porta brace, plus a mkh70 in a Rycote windshield, and a backpack full of batteries, extra cables, and accessories plus my personal bag with my laptop in it. Is it possible to travel like this in Canada, US and Israel? Any suggestions will be most welcome. Thanks Tony Muricy

So... next weekend will be my first music video gig, and I just want to speak out loud to verify my workflow is solid: This will be shot on a RED, with final output frame rate 23.98. I'll be using a rip of the final mix CD as the playback for talent through a PA system. I'll be micing the PA system to record the reference track to my 702T stamping TC at the 23.98 rate of the RED. For insurance purposes of TC sync, I was going to use my lock-it on the RED as well. I couldn't imagine that there would be any sync issues from what's done on camera sync'ing to the actual final CD mix when editing together. Am I missing anything?

Marc, I just read your Vol 22 Issue #1 column in the Coffey Files today...awesome read, thanks for the detailed info. I had a question though... I usually run an Ambient 202CT clock-it on my RED shoots... jam in the morning from the 702T and leave the box on the camera all day. I just use Free Run however, since I have no physical connection with the camera just the clock and a wireless reference track. I didn't see you actually use the term "free run" and was curious with your thoughts on that vs. rec run and TOD?

Doing a gig for someone in which they want to pay 'per hour'. Never done that before.. so here's the questions.. Should I include: 1) Drving time from home to location? Most likely not because it's treated like a 9.5 job, and you get there at the call time, which is the 'start billing' time right? 2) Paid for lunch? 3) Load out time? Most likely right? 4) Location moves? 5) Anything I missed? Thanks -Richard

Hey, even I can ask a stupid question... How have most people been posting video to this site? Something has changed here that confuses me, or I am just confusing this site with many of the others I have been dealing with this last month. I thought we were able to just paste html embed code for video and it would show up, player and all, right within the post. I see that most people have put in the link, from YouTube for example, and that seems to work. How do you actually do that? Thanks, Jeff Wexler (not afraid to ask a stupid question, hoping for a smart answer).

Okay so I'm still hanging in with the convoluted plot behemoth that is LOST.. Anyone notice that the dialog seems a bit poor lately? (I'm talking audio quality not writing;) I'm entirely willing to chalk it up to something in the broadcast chain but I don't think it's that.. For example the background sound will be clear as a bell (waves, jungle noise, etc) but the dialog seems muddy and often lacks presence.. as if the whole show was done only with wires buried deep in clothing which I can't imagine is true.. Anyone else know what's going on? Am I crazy? Or is it a matter of dual camera shooting wide/tight limitation forcing everything to play off the lavs? …

I saw a movie tonight, big budget movie from about 15 years ago, and there's a scene where the love interest of the main character is chasing him out of a party to get him to come back inside. As the poor, tiny actress is running in heels across grass, you see her wireless pack with a big black thigh strap slide right out of the little dress and right down to her ankle. There it was. Not for a couple of frames, but at least a full two seconds as she ran up, until they cut to the reverse. It is of no fault of the sound mixer, of course, and knowing that there MUST have been video playback on this film, it's odd that this was the chosen take or the only take available…

Dear All, Heads up on the ERX and Zaxnet, WOW! Two are hanging on the Red’s for TC and one channel of audio... The other two are being fought over! They are crystal clear with a great range…. Most surprising is the demand by the “DP he loves em… (: Hide them The Director asks… “Why isn’t everyone using these? Don’t get me started on the 992! Morning all, General question for yall. When mixing a movie do any of you still run a line a line out to boom? I ask because I'm having difficulties on the show I'm on now. It's drama via screams and yells followed by whispered dialog. When wireless I've got the gain on the Lectro SM set to 0 and when a particular actress yells, she pegs the unit and I'm getting distortion. The only solution I've found so far is to bring out the old 200 foot snake and run a hard line to the boom, then control gain on the 788t. I just ordered an adapter cable with a higher resister values to try an help the issue, but in general do many of you guys still hard line? I love the sound of ha…

Need Sound Mixer and Boom, PAY. 5/22 (Chatsworth) Date: 2010-05-14, 4:04PM PDT Reply to: gigs-mpgfg-1741376625@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] Looking for a 2 person sound team, mixer and boom. It's a one day shoot in an amazing house in chatsworth for a cooking show pilot. You must own your top notch equipment, be respectful to the location and obviously have chops in your work. The pay is $300 flat, both for you and your boom op (i'll leave it to you to figure out the money distribution). Probably a 10 hour shoot, daytime only. I can't stress enough how important the sound is on this production, this is a legit pilot with network interest tha…

I came across this online hearing test. It's on the University New South Wales site. I've been concerned about my hearing 12kHz and above since I had a double ear infection a couple of years ago. It gives me some idea where I am, but I still want to get a thorough hearing exam. Does anyone have a good audiologist in L.A.? Rich.

I always avoid going on payroll at all costs and always do a Box Rental. Well I just did a job and they have stated they want me to file a IRS Form 8832 with them in order to get paid. I have never been required to file this form and my accountant has instructed me not to file this form or send it to EP. I am incorporated LLC with an S Corp designation. EP is trying to tell me I am not a corporation and need to file this to get paid. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue with EP or another company. Usually I just sent my W-9 and Articles of In corp. It amazes me how complicated all this paper work is. I miss just sending in a W-9 and invoice. I have attached thi…

I just learned a new recording Acronym. I was working on a Travel Channel Shoot for a series called Most Terrifying Places. We went to 3 haunted places including Lizzy Borden's house. All the paranormal experts kept referring to EVPs. Finally I asked what is an EVP. His answer was Electronic Voice Phenomenon. It is when after making a recording and you play it back at a later time you hear voices (spirits) on the recording that you didn't hear while actually making the recording. I asked the producer to let me know if I recorded any EVPs during any of my 3 days of recording. Haven't heard anything yet. Andy

A friend of mine sent this to me one of the worst Best is the name of his production company: This is Ryan McClellan - Writer / Director / Survivor: I am an "amateur" Filmmaker (though I don't see anything amateurish about it), targeting mainly indie Festivals, DVD releases, and such. I am embarking on the second attempt to produce my film: "SWEAT", which is a true story based on my High school years: drug addiction, self-victimization, emotional disorder diagnoses, and cheating girlfriends. Sound like an episode of "90210"? Believe me, this is a genre all to itself, and if this turns out the way it is envisioned in my mind, this is something I can see topping "…

That is, he is obsessive about the sound quality of his music. A onetime audio engineer who now works as a consultant for Stereo Exchange, an upscale audio store in Manhattan, Mr. Zimmer lights up when talking about high fidelity, bit rates and $10,000 loudspeakers. But iPods and compressed computer files — the most popular vehicles for audio today — are “sucking the life out of music,…

I might have posted this question earlier on in the wrong section. Again looking for your ideas: How do you guys handle scenes where it really goes from whispering to shouting back and force? I`m talking really extrem levels and rather unpredictable. I just finished a shoot with a scene like that and only managed to get it by using two mics. One CMIT for the whispering and a MK41 for the screaming in 1meter distance. All shot in a very echoy basement. To get the heavy breathing of one actor just in between the lines when the other actress was screaming to someone upstairs I think post can just grab the good pieces and kill the overloaded parts. Any other ideas? On so…
