I'd like to update this description of a college level class in "Production Sound for Movies": "This course covers the fundamentals of sound and provides an introduction to using sound practically and creatively. Students will be trained to properly record sound for production. Course material will cover: sound theory, including the differences between sounds and pictures, and the value of perspective in sound; development of sound from its beginnings to new techniques and systems found on today's sets, in theatres, and in the home; the tools used in production, including microphones, booms, mixers, tape, and recorders; the sync pulse and time code; recording…

We are guessing that heads were spinning over at Warner Bros. Studios when a script for the final Harry Potter movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallowsâ€ was left behind at a bar. If you were to find a script marked “private and confidential,â€ what would you do? Recently, several crew members who were filming the final installment of Potter in Hertfordshire, England, stopped by a local pub and enjoyed some beers (maybe too many) and carelessly left behind a script. The unidentified person who found the script said, “I couldn’t believe my eyes, I know guys who work on the film drink in the pub, but it’s very embarrassing that someone could just leave it …

Historically, Lectro reserves today as a date to launch a radically cutting edge piece of gear that almost seems unbelievable. Any word on if they have released a new piece of gear today ?

This is one of my favorite things to watch on TV right now! Does anyone know what kind of equipment they use? I'm talking not only sound, but the camera as well. It looks and sounds amazing. I know this is a sound group, I'm just not a member of any camera forums. The best Google could give me is "state of the art high definition cameras." I'm also curious how the sounds are captured. Are they recorded sync with what the cameras are getting, or is someone going to the zoo with a recorder later? Any info, or just thoughts on the show, is much appreciated! -Ryan

I received, as well as many others in our market, a bizarre email(at least to me) asking for submissions of resumes to their company for future films being shot in our market. It seems like a very normal request, except at the end they have the following... "In addition provide union status and access to links for reels and if available references. Due to the financial structure in place no phone calls will be accepted (thus no number provided) all communication will be done via this email only, until we move to the next stage of hiring. No law firm will accept calls on our behalf. Any party calling any law firm seeking information on the production group or for add…

Last night I said here (http://www.jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=2338.msg16207#msg16207) that I would compare my experience working with the Cantar X (1.88) with my Deva 5. The obvious major difference is the way each recorder allows you to get access to major features and make changes. The Cantar is based around a mechanical approach of utilizing various buttons, the "Main Selector" and what it calls the "Triple Crown". The Deva also uses buttons but they are mostly short cuts to access it's touch sensitive screen, where you can set every feature. (You can see photos of the Cantar and Deva at the bottom of my lengthy post to relate to what I'm blathering about.) …

I'm working in Las Vegas April 1-4 on a doc project. I will be bringing equipment, but in case I need something short-notice, I was wondering which rental house's number would be good to have in my wallet. Anyone have a suggestion?

Hi folks, I have some common questions about TC because I have just received my 744T. Why use 30fps on the audio recorder when shooting 24fps film (considering a 60 seconds TV commercial)? If the pos will do the job at 29,97fps, why not to use the same TC on the recorder? When should I use 48.048kH? If I record audio at 30fps and a digital camera record image at 23.96fps how can I fix that in FinalCut? Thanks! N.

Anybody know the difference between "free run" and 24 hour run" on the 788t? I know "24 hour run" syncs to the clock for time of day, but normal "free run" can do that also. So, what is the difference and which should be used? Thanking you now

Cinematographer Mauro Fiore won the Oscar for Avatar even though he only worked on the live-action sequences which was 30% of the movie. Maybe this explains why the ASC Awarded their top award to Christian Berger for "The White Ribbon". The American Society of Cinematographers nominees were Barry Ackroyd for The Hurt Locker, Dion Beebe for Nine, Christian Berger for The White Ribbon, Mauro Fiore for Avatar, and Robert Richardson for Inglorious Basterds. http://roll-sound.com/ What do you think, useful resource or more of a primer for prospective sound dept persons or non-sound people who want to know more? I looked at his credits, and it didn't seem he was an established mixer, although maybe he has more work than what is listed in IMDB.

As you know the Motion Picture Academy decided to have 10 nominees in the "Best Picture" category. The nominating process is a "preferential ballot". This means you write-in your ten best picks in the order of 1 - 10. All the other categories have the traditional five nominations. This preferential system has worked beautifully for the Oscars during the last 82 years. The final ballot is structured where you vote only for the one choice you believe deserves the Oscar in that category. HOWEVER, this year, in the Best Picture category they have instituted a second preferential vote -- which to me is really strange. I guess they were worried that by doubling the choices t…

I found it interesting that they missed some people in the "tribute" section last night at the Oscars. On that note , they did include Nat Boxer a new york soundman long since retired who died last Dec.. However he did several Francis Ford Coppolla movies. and won an oscar or two. If I recall..I think he was one of those guys that got hired as sound mixer...then boomed the show ( like a Nelson Stoll ) situation. Anybody out there have any thoughts on "mixer's" that serve as boom op on the production ?

Hey there, I am a recent Columbia College graduate trying to do location sound in LA. I am very interested doing ENG sound mixing for a local news station and eventually a show that I can do some traveling for, but I have no clue where to begin. Has anyone worked for the local news or know a sound guy who does? I'd love to get some advice on starting this type of career. Thanks.

Well.. I did enjoy the movie for the most part, but the one thing that bugged me other than the inaccuracy of the SOP of this EOD team, was the sound editing/sfx for this film, very inaccurate weapon sfx. Their mixing award however, I give them a big grats.

Hi, I will record a TV commercial with playback music and dialogue. It will be in film 24 FPS (Arri or Aaton). My equipment for this job is a 744T, smart slate, boom and 2 radio mics. I have a lap top running a M-Box based ProTools too. What is the best way/workflow to feed my smart slate with playback TC from ProTools. I will receive the music without TC (so, I have to prepare the playback session). I used to do it with DAT but now... Thanks and success to sound people. Napoleao
