Hello, I was wondering if anyone here on JW is a member of the Local 480. Do you have a full time residency there , or a part time there and part time elsewhere? whats going on in Albuquerque lately? I heard that there is going to be a new stage built near Santa Fe. I grew up in SF,NM and I still have some family there. I wouldnt mind spending some time back home and It would be great if I could get some work while im out there too. Matt McGowin

I never saw "Public Enemy" at the Cinema, I was curious to hear how it sounded in the comfort of my own home, without the expectation that a visit to the Cinema brings, I was in disbelief at some of the dialogue, my main thoughts were what a waste of a Movie to have dozens of lines lost..... As posted before some very strange choices. Kindest Regards Brian

I've been watching Mandy like a hawk this last year (desperate for work), but there's always some post like "no budget need crew". I mean.... I really don't understand this, or how people with their own gear get by with this kind of expectation (if they're actually working these?). I feel I've done my fair share of freebies now, and since investing heavily into gear to work larger and more professional jobs I find it aggravating as hell to see expectations like this. Am I alone? Why would anyone with their own equipment go work a gig for 8+ hours for free? How do you more seasoned mixers deal with rate grinders and producers that think what we do is inexpensive?

Hey there, Happy New Year! I'm into researching some boundary mics in order to extend my possibilities on set. I've checked the price and specifications of Crown's PZM 30-D, Audio Technica U841A, Sennheiser E912, AKG C542BL, AKG C547BL and Sanken CUB-01. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to have them in my hands and listen to them, so i'm taking my decision based on their specs and of course on your valuable opinions. According to your experience which should I buy? I'm thinking of purchasing a cardioid or hyper and one with a more wide pattern. Best regards, Marco

HARLEY DAVIDSON FACES STIFF COMPETITION FROM JOHNSON MARINE WHO INTRODUCES A NEW LINE OF MOTORCYCLES At a press conference late Monday, the CEO of Johnson Marine, makers of Johnson outboard marine engines and other recreational equipment, unveiled a new line of heavyweight cruiser style motorcycles designed to compete head to head with industry leader Harley-Davidson. Peter Long, Johnson brands marketing manager said, "We have studied the market and determined that Harley, while highly successful, has narrowly missed the mark when targeting motorcycle buyers". Long added, "We at Johnson are convinced that our product hits the target dead center and promises to dra…

I'm starting a web based drama series in the new year and I've just had an email from the producer. To save time and money, they now want so get single system sound (hard wire or a wireless hop to camera). I've never worked on a purely web-based show before, so I don't know how important stereo atmos is on a shoot like this. Is it best to approach this the same way I would do any other drama production, or can I scale down my kit and workload because of the production style? I'll be a one man sound department. We'll be working on an EX1, so should I just concentrate on dialogue for both of the available channels and forget about atmos or commit one channel for dialogue an…

Q. How can you tell when a Producer is lying? A. Their lips are moving. Q. What is the difference between a D.O.P and God? A. God does not think he is a D.O.P. Q. What is the difference between a Gaffer and a Grip? A. A Gaffer removes the dishes from the sink before he pisses in it. Q. Why do Soundies never help move anything on set? A. They can't count beyond 1, 2 - 1, 2 check 1, 2. ha ha ha (everyone lifts on 3) yeah funny huh!

Hey Everyone, I had a shoot a couple weeks ago for some cable promos. This production company usually asks for a transcription recording, but this time the specifically said they didn't need it. Fast forward to today when the producer calls me and says they do need a transcription to be made. I told them I could make the files for them if needed - just by playing back the takes from my 744t and recording timecode and audio to a separate recorder. (the transcription house they normally use requires timecode on channel 1, program audio on 2) Are there in fact transcription houses that can actually use a .wav file with the timecode embedded in the metadata? If so, a…

I am posting a link to a clip from "Almost Famous" which demonstrates how good a scene can play even when shot entirely to a pre-recorded playback track. The way we did all the concert scenes in that movie produced the best concert scenes I have ever been a part of. There was discussion early on that the concert scenes would have to be done live or they just would not feel right. Clearer heads prevailed and for all the right reasons we did all the concert scenes to playback. Billy Cruddup was not really a guitar player, and in fact the only real experienced musicians in Stillwater were the drummer and the bass player. Jason Lee is not really singer but is completely belie…

I'm re-posting a topic I started on the Lectrosonics User Group. I'd like to see how other Venue users feel about my request? Bruce, I have had discussions with several Venue users and we all find that when we are operating strictly off our sound cart battery, the Venue Receivers draw a lot of current. I've always wished that I could power off individual receiver modules that I am not using, to minimize the current draw on my sound cart battery. Like I used to do with the older 411 racks. I have two Venues and currently 8 receiver modules, but sometimes I only have a couple or at the most four modules operating at one time, yet all 8 receivers are drawing…

Hi All, A DOP friend of mine received enquiries to shoot and recommend a sound recordist for a filming schedule for a French artist Kader Attia from 15th Dec to 20th Dec 2009. Since we work a lot together my friend recommended my name. My friend went and met this guy on the 9th of Dec. and was assured that the dates were confirmed. On the 14th of Dec, I did not receive any communication till 10.30 in the night. So I texted the production person; and after 11pm I get this message which says that ’tomorrow we are only filming general views so don’t need you and you will be informed when you are required’. The next day my DOP friend told Kader Attia ‘Th…

This is a tech question (I know it belongs in the equipment section), but the conversations are more lively over here. My experience is that most of the new Digital Video Monitors aren't properly terminated and wreck havoc when you hard line them to Video Assist. I've always used analog Marshall's with tuners for maximum flexibility. Anyhow, a Digital Marshall Monitor with a tuner isn't an option, so I wanted to ask... Would sending the signal through a balun (i.e. MuxLab 500012) rectify the termination issue. I've been chomping at the bit to get on board the Cat 5 bandwagon, and thought this might be a possible solution. I haven't really researched the transmis…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg5Xzo-EfPo This should improve the sales of encrypted wireless systems. I can't exactly explain why, but I kind of respect Britney. I don't care for her singing style or life choices, but I can't help but quietly root for the girl. I feel kind of bad posting this. But I figured it would be of interest.

Hi everyone, i find myself with two similar jobs coming up that i would like some advice on. i recently did a show; it was a choir competition. There were three judges, a presenter and then different choirs came on and sang. The judges and the presenter were wired with lavs (two hard wired and two wireless) and i had two schoeps cmc mk41 in a stereo pair for the choirs. all channels came into my allen and heath desk and recorded onto a 788t. it was one of those days where everything sounded great. so we are moving onto the final of the show but there will be a difference this time. an audience. my concern now is that the audience will have to hear what the judges a…

I was asked by a Director friend of mine to see if I could help some of his friends discover what is happening in their immediate neighborhood. In June this year, they started getting extremely low frequency sound getting into their wooden house. The effect is that they can't sleep at night as it is at its loudest then. When they put their heads down on the pillows there's a constant but with slight variations, very deep rumble that goes most of the night. They suspect that a battery recycling and disposal factory about half a mile away have installed some new equipment that is causing this. The factory has been there for years and has some bad environmental history. Als…
