Just a general discussion thing, but, let's imagine that you are starting out on the path as a mixer today, what would be the first piece of equipment that you'd buy and why?

They're just so dang cool, I want to look into them and their cost. Of course production would foot the bill, but I heard they're expensive, and that they only come from one place. Dan Izen

This email was received by the entire Board of the CAS: To Whom It May Concern: Please take this as positive critisism. This past weekend our family spent much time in Chicago for a weekend getaway. We sat at the condo and watched 2 excellent movies. Problem #1: Why is it the sound mixers or sound production artists have this continual urge to make the music louder at the soft spoken portions of the movie? Isn't the object of the movie to allow us the HEAR what is being said vs commenting on how the music fits the scene or how beautiful the arrangement may be? As a person with a slight hearing impairment I missed several important portions of the movies, and so d…

I had a very very close call on Saturday. The kind of close call that gets people fired. You know how they say that after 12 hours of working on the set, people get stupid, and sometimes make stupid mistakes. Well I'm no exception thats for sure. I'm working on a Reality TV show as the Senior Mixer. In our crew we have a Jr. Mixer (Mike) and a sound assisant. We're recording over 18 wireless mics to 4 recorders. 2 PD6's, 1 702T, and 1 744T. The PD6's are simply recording ISOs, and the Sound Deivces are recording ISO's with 2 master mix tracks. Each week the editor hands us a master hard drive to put all the audio onto. Friday when we got the hard drive fro…

After reading the Need Advice! thread I recall another story about a "snake". This goes back maybe 7 or 8 years, sorta' before the EZ availability of sharing photos online and the many avenues for equipment trading online- I believe this transaction took place via a equipment trading magazine. A boom operator in the west (not Cali) offered a boom snake for sale. I seem to recall she was leaving the business. We talked on the phone and discussed the snake, i.e. detachable box at boom op's end, mono mic with stereo headphone jack, and the length. We came to an agreement on price, kinda high because it was in "very good shape". I even paid for the shipping and the Pa…

Hi peeps, I had this gig last August where I was hired as Production Sound Mixer. I filled out all necessary forms including the 1099 form correctly. Surprisingly, I got an e-mail from the producer stating that I will need to give her my Fed Tax ID. Sure I can give it to her, but I never operated under a company name then. I'm still working as a freelancer, but what do I do under this circumstance? Alan

I'm about to start a pilot for Warners and noticed that they're using the Panvision Genesis. This is from a DP and producer that love traditional film. When I asked why they're going this route the DP said that ALL pilots were going this way now because it will now be under the AFTRA contract, ie: screw SAG and their baggage, I'm getting a new girlfriend.

Many of you may know Stan McClain who owns Filmtools. He recently sent out the Filmtools newsletter to his customers, urging them to vote NO on the new contract. I am posting the newsletter here since I think it is a well written piece, written from the heart in an effort to get the I.A. back on track to be a democratic and representative labor union. By Stan McClain Today is March 3rd and this memo is targeted to those of you who are affected by the IATSE negotiations. Bypass this if it does not pertain to you. Most of you have voted by now, so this may arrive to you a few days late. Filmtools has a privacy agreement with its customers, insuring that we will not s…

Well Congress voted today to put off the Switch over to digital TV until June 12th of this year. So a short reprieve for those looking to squeeze a few more months rental out of their 700 Mhz wireless. It still needs the President's signature, but Obama has said he was in favor of the delay so that should come tomorrow. ----Courtney

Hello jwsound community, I want to initiate a discussion about all of the sometimes mundane, but often indispensable, items that mixers keep on hand. Not addressing the spare 01V or the bullhorn on the truck, please share a few of the things that you find it worth your while to cart around every day. As a mixer whose bulk of experience mixing has been in the documentary/ENG/reality realms, I decided to make a point in 2008 of interspersing my mixing gigs with quite of bit of day-playing as Utility Sound with several very experienced, top-notch mixers. I’ve learned more than I can say, and the most valuable knowledge had nothing to do with gear. All the same, part…

MILK

I just saw MILK at a cinema here today. It was quite an incredible film. Savides' work in matching and creating the ambiences of the 70's has been closely intertwined with actual footage from the time. I saw the end credits mentioned two sound mixers, actually one of them as sound mixer and boom. Presumably he was going around working documentary style while the other sound mixer was doing the traditional feature style... The sound mixers' work was exemplary. I had to sometimes "crane my neck" to hear a character over the other in some situations where there was a lot of activity, but then, it was most realistic to the fact that it actually made me feel like i…

All the numbers on our membership are there in the files! Someone inside needs to run a report detailing exactly how many members would be affected if the 400 hour rule was in effect this qualifying period. Are we talking a handful of people, or are we talking hundreds and hundreds? The union leadership already knows what the expected attrition rate would be. Why can't we get access to that information? If it's a small amount, then no worries, we work harder (only said for emphasis). But, if it is a large amount, over 10% - 15% or higher, then this information is being kept from us for a reason. It would be devastating! Our leadership works for us, so why…

Hey Matthias--I'm post-mixing a film you recorded in Germany a few years ago: Meaghan Kimball's "BLAU JEANS". Interesting film. Man--they didn't cut you any slack on the locations though, did they? Yikes! Philip Perkins

Hi, my name is Nejc Poberaj I am a new member here. I have a question for all you pros. I have been doing full time freelance sound work for about two years now, and its been mostly ENG, Reality, Documentary type work. I am hoping to some day be able to work on commercials, union shows, movies. And I was curious how and if any of you have made the transition from TV to Film? Also can anyone explain to me how the Y-7a, Y-16 Ect... works? Or at least point me in a direction where all that union stuff is explained? I also dont mind starting from the beginning as a trainee so if anyone knows how to become one of those please share. Thanks.

More good writing from Gary Dunham below. IMPORTANT: voting NO is NOT a vote for a strike --- the powers that are fear mongering and are very scared that the membership will exercise its lawful and responsible right to vote. Ron Kutak has even gone so far as to subvert the constitution and by-laws, declaring that the members votes are only a guideline and the ultimate decision will be made, sort of like the electoral college version of democracy. from Gary Dunham: …"And Ron stated that our votes, once cast, will be 'represented' as a sort of electoral college, instead of treated as a general election, which is what the membership has always been led to believe." I…
