I listened today to my first film as a mixer. I remember feeling it was not very good while doing it. New equipment, which in hindsight I obviously wasn't ready to use, mostly inexperienced boom operators (but one great one for 5 days - thank goodness), and really not enough experience myself behind the panel. Listening with headphones to get the true feeling of disaster, it WAS as bad as I remember. I'm wondering if anyone else here has had the misfortune of getting a DVD and listening to a job you did before perhaps you were ready. I am embarrassed by it, but so glad my other films have turned out so much better. And I learn more and more each time, as I expect …

I love how solid an RF indication the digital channels show up on the lectros. There is no low level bleed into neighboring channels, like I noticed on analog stations. I can place frequencies right up to the last frequency, if I wanted to. It all makes sense really, and am glad to see it. Just a thought.

The City's legislative analysts office just finished a report on what each lost show actually costs the local economy - in this case, the tax revenues generated by the production of each episode of an hour-long drama (Ugly Betty). I have the report - but I'm not sure how to post it here. It's a 2mb PDF. -- Eric This is from a press release from L.A. City Councilman Eric Garcetti's office: REPORT SHOWS LOSS OF TELEVISION SERIES PRODUCTION COSTLY TO LOCAL ECONOMY Study conducted by Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation is result of Garcetti’s “Ugly Bettyâ€ motion LOS ANGELES -- In response to a motion authored by Los Angeles City Counc…

It was a real nice night. I sat with Resul Pookutty from India's Slumdog Millionaire and it was a pleasure seeing his face when they announced him as the winner for feature films. He then gave a heartfelt speech addressing the long road the world's largest film making country has gone down getting from ADR to production quality audio. Director's Norman Jewison and Paul Mazursky gave nice little speechs too. Our own Richard Van Dyke and Crew Chamberlain's ears must have been burning when they were mentioned quite favorably for shows they did with Paul.

Was looking at JK Audios Cell Tap. Has anyone used this with any success and wouldn't you need a 3 way call. Any help would b appreciated. Thanks David Obermeyer

What are we going to do when every job is declared as "New Media"? The very real concern over the 400 hours requirement has overshadowed some very important provisions of this new contract. Scott Kaye and Alan Disler, both very active in Camera Guild, made the following comments: On Feb 9, 2009, at 8:54 PM, Scott Kaye wrote: <i>"Does this mean that, if ratified, members working out-of-classification on "New Media" productions WOULD have to re-rate, so long as they failed to report their job? If this is correct, it looks like they are trying to legislate the reporting of jobs as a way to avoid having to re-rate. If you don't report the job, then how will …

Greetings guys (and perhaps girls too), I'm surprised that this hasn't come up sooner. It's that time again.. Taxes. As a sound mixer (and I'm sure you guys are allot like me) I'm very very organized. Each year I do a complete spread sheet of every single small experience, every single write off that I can come up with, going over a mountain of receipts and invoices, just to see where the money all went. This year I've been somewhat surprised at "the sound biz" once again as I bought a ton of last minute upgrades to my kits including a new computer and van this year too. I consider this biz to be somewhat different then most other businesses, and the amount of…

Hey Guys, On a shoot yesterday, when our scheduled lunch time hit "Grace" was called to do one more shot before breaking. At the end of the day, as typically happens with small budget shoots, chaos started to happen and communication fell apart. Just before the scheduled wrap time, the line producer came over to me and asked me what time I needed to be out and what calling "Grace" meant. She wanted to make sure that she did not have to pay any overtime..... Comments? pshap (You all rock... hard... Audio Rules on set....)

I have found another invoice program which looks to be very good. It has some features we may not need, like a timer for timed, hourly billing, but the interface is clean and simple. It is easy to make client lists, product (item) lists and so forth, generating invoices that can be printed, saved as .pdf or emailed. One thing I really appreciate is the template editor which provides many default invoice templates that you can customize. Check it out if this is something you have been looking for: http://stuntsoftware.com/OnTheJob/

And we don't have a smart slate here, that's why i want to send a mix signal to red,but there still one thing i'm curious, can i send the 788T's Track's signal to 788'T's Output and then let this signal go to camera directly,i…

This is fiction, of course, but this exchange (so skillfully written but I don’t by whom) is probably not too far off the truth. Here is how Matt Loeb and Nick Counter negotiate: Counter: Loeb, get in here. Stop yakking with that (chuckle) Bargaining Unit. Loeb: Yes sir. Right away sir. Counter: Close the door, Loeb. Loeb: Yes sir. Counter: Loeb, you failed us. Loeb: Yes sir, I'm sorry sir. If I could just... Counter: Shut up, Loeb. We let Short retire because he said you could take care of business. Loeb: I'm sorry sir. Counter: SORRY? Get this, guys. Loeb is SORRY. (Jeers from the assembled lawyers in the room, sitting in bleachers, in dark…

Another lost job...

The beat goes on.... Yesterday I lost a job (again) due to my unwillingness to perform OUR job without a Boom Operator. This mind you is on a big union Commercial. The old "we only have a few lines" crap came up again. There is a time and place for such a request... Almost, like a guy sitting on a stool.... But those are few and far between... My first thought is... What about the boom ops and their families? I'm now doing their job so the Producer can move their pay into the Craft service column? Please... Devastating to the boom ops... Now on this forum we have discussed this quite a bit, but due to the excuse "Well with the economy and all..." and othe…

I worked with a nice fellow recently who was born almost totally deaf, and he has this operation every 5 years where they REMOVE his ear completely and mess around with all this (metal or whatever) crap that REPLACED his eardrum and the 3 tiny bones and all kinds of stuff! Every 5 years he would have it done on one ear, then 5 years later on the other ear. One time they put back an ear crooked and he had to wait 10 years for them to fix it! Can they fix deafness? Or certain types? I wonder where the research facilities are and what kind of training these scientists and surgeons had to have... I think better understanding the ear would lead to being able to des…

Hey guys, sorry to bring some gloom to the group, but I am trying to help out a few friends. Recently a bunch of of friends and fellow film technicians world on a Bollywood film in Philadelphia. The producing company was an Australian production company called Swish, Mitu Bhowmick is/was the producer for Swish in charge of production. The last week's checks for almost the entire Philly crew were postdated with individual notes to the effect of "do not deposit/cash until *this date*". Everyone thought that was a little slimy, and now since the date has passed and most checks have since bounced, and there has been no communication with the Swish company, people are starting…
