Hey JW Sound community. I'm a sound designer and re-recording mixer but now I'm taking on the hat of PRODUCER for an animated feature film. I need some help refining my pitch and was hoping to get some community criticism. The pitch is here www.thechampionmovie.com. Please tell me how I can improve the pitch... Thanks!

Hello all, I was looking for a little bit of help in translation about a doc about film-making which needs to be subtitled for DVD. What would the French word for "Sync Sound" be? in relation to sentences like "running a sync sound set" or "Shooting a sync-sound film in this city". Cheers, Yush

Other World Computing has introduced a new line of Solid State Drives. The specs are great, the PRICE, not so much (actually, TOO much). They are still really too expensive I think but the prices are bound to go down and the capacities will go up. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/Mercury_Extreme_SSD_Sandforce - Jeff Wexler

I recently did a shoot for a fictional episodic web series. The cast members were all women, and when it came time to get them miked up, I asked what had personally worked best for them in past shoots. They all said cleavage/bra mics. Lately I've had good results with hair miking, but none of them were interested in trying it out. As far as negating how to put on each mic, I just played it by year with each actress. As you may already know, I've been doing location sound here and there for a couple years, but this shoot was the first time I've set up "bra microphones" (forgive me if that's not the best term for it... the term "cleavage mics" seems worse somehow). At…

My good friend and fellow sound man D'Marco Ray died this morning after a long battle with cancer. He was a pleasure to be around in every way. He gave years to his country in the service, he was a self made success, handsome, charming, funny, professional and ethical. To have met him was to be his friend. He is truly missed. Only the good die young.

First off I am not experienced sound mixer. I am just working with friend to get good dialog recorded on his short film. We shot scene already and I was not happy how it came out so thankfully, due to other production issues, I get a second chance to get it right. Here is scene: interior of bar with 5 characters. Main character in middle, people on both side of him and bartender behind the bar. This is a challenge for me. In original shoot, we boomed with single shotgun mkh60. The problem is that there is a lot of quick exchanges between bar patrons that was impossible to track with boom, and even at times 2 people would be talking at almost same time at opposite ends …

There was an interesting article in the latest issue of Laser Focus World on a method using pretty cheap components (Infrared laser and CCD camera and computer) to evesdrop or record audio remotely from hundreds of meters away. I don't think it will allow us to dump our wireless mics in exchange for a laser and a camera just yet, but it makes you think about the technology the spooks must have at their disposal for eavesdropping on conversations without being detected. I'm fairly new to location audio, and was hoping to get some of your thoughts on CAS and sound unions. Sorry if this is a pretty general question, but what are the advantages of joining either, when should one do so, and just the basics of what they are/do? The work I've done thus far is usually centered around independent film and TV commercials but I am looking to hopefully expand into bigger things. Anyway, thanks for tolerating this newbie question and all advice is welcome.

I am a huge fan of "The Big Lebowski" as are many others out there. There may be many Lebowski haters as well, but as the Dude would say, "thats like your opinion man"... I ran across this and thought I would share it with all the lovers here @jwsound.net. http://www.lebowskifest.com/LeBlogski/tabid/173/Default.aspx. It may be coming to a town near you. Enjoy. I became a fan of the Coen Bros. after I saw "Blood Simple" way back then and have enjoyed all their work on many levels over the years. I have seen all their films 3 or many more times each, but none even come close to 'T B L'. 200 times at least. I have a copy at home and one in my van. When we shoot nights…

Well...I will start by writing I wasn't watching the American Idol auditions on purpose. Sometimes I'll watch the real show, because the occasional good performance can be seen, but my 11-year-old was watching the auditions and this charming man (too old - by the rules - to be on the show) was given a chance to sing a song he wrote. It's pretty funny, and has become an immediate YouTube sensation with hundreds of people performing cover versions. Expect to see quite a bit of this hit Fox and the web in the next couple of months. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsv2LrdXf1Y The following cover version is Jimmy Fallon as Neil Young.... It has been pulled from many…

Humm.. lets see if I can count the red flags. - It turned out to be a student gig. The job post and emails didn't indicate this. - In his email he says that, "I believe in giving freedom to the crew as long as it doesn't slide too far from the vision of the Director" (HUGE RED FLAG) - He wouldn't say in his emails if it was really a paid gig or not. - He sent a mass email to meet at a building near Warner Bros. and it was the NY Film Academy School building. - We were suppose to be meeting on the 5th floor, and there's 20 people standing there. Felt like a cattle call to me. - He wouldn't say if this was an interview or not, but more of 'an inform…

I was tempted to write about this topic yesterday. As you know I am an opponent of the current government health care bill that is being negotiated in Congress. I am totally for reform of the system with good regulations but not a government takeover. In other threads going back almost eight months ago, I suggested that the passage of "Obamacare" would be the deathblow to the Motion Picture Health Plan that we currently have. Thank goodness that my favorite entertainment blogger, Jonathan Handel of Digital Media Law tackled the topic with this: Baby You Can Drive My Car: Hollywood Health Plans May Have to Pay “Cadillac Planâ€ Tax Hollywood unions have long barga…

Many of us do a lot of travel on airplanes and we now have another set of new regulations to make flying an even more unbearable event. Here are the new directives from the TSA on new "In Flight" rules: IN FLIGHT 1. During flight, the aircraft operator must ensure that the following procedures are followed: 1. Passengers must remain in seats beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. 2. Passenger access to carry-on baggage is prohibited beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. 3. Disable aircraft-integrated passenger communications systems and services (phone, internet access services, live television programming, global positioning systems) prior…

G'day, I'm heading over the pacific for a skiing holiday; and am stopping in Vancouver for a little bit to catch up with some mates. I've got a few days spare; and aside from doing touristy stuff - i was wondering if any local soundos would be interested in meeting up for a drink. I'd also be very keen on a few set-visits. So, if anyone's working; and would be happy for me to stop-in for a few minutes, it'd be great to see how you get it done on the other side of the world. I'm in town from the 20th until the 31st of January; before heading off to Sun Peaks, in the interior of BC. cheers, Ian Thomson ian@thompsound.com www.thompsound.com
