Hey Guys, Today I just had one of the worst sound days of my career. I was hired to do ten 2min shorts for a well known broadcaster. I was told by the producer (who is a good friend) that I would mainly be doing playback, that these shorts are more of a music video format. I'd also being doing EPK. The whole shoot is seven days through out the month. I've already done one day and it went really well. Today I show up and there are two RED cams plus the EPK, no playback. The short today is two women who are training out in the woods. The director wants me to get more SFX type stuff. You know huffing and puffing, feet running in the woods, things like that. …

http://www.oneandother.co.uk/ Apologies if this information is already on the site and I was too lazy to find it! Anyway, it's a pretty interesting idea you all can read about it, but how the heck is the sound so natural and good? These people have all kinds of outfits that couldn't have possibly gone through a wardrobe check, and also they're moving around and I've never heard a wisp of fabric noise. They're standing on a flat block of concrete on the top of a tall column - I don't see no mics! Anyone from London out there know this? What a wacky gig for a sound guy... Dan Izen

I see Denecke has a new TC box called the SB-3. It looks to me like it would be a cheaper option to the SB-T (or Lockit). Not being a video engineer, I don't know what the SB-3 leaves out that the SB-T has. Is the SB-3 suitable for a multi-camera RED shoot providing "normal" settings? i.e. 1 for the Deva, 1 for each camera... Thoughts...

Hi everyone! I'm SOOOOO sorry - I haven't investigated/googled this enough, but I'm overwhelmed with preparations for a shoot on Thursday, so I hope you guys (gals?) don't mind me addressing you with this issue: I was planning to attach a Lectro IFBR1a receiver somewhere on the RED cam body, to record a scratch mixdown throughout a 3-week feature shoot. I spoke to the owner of this particular RED cam (rev 17), and he said he fears that a wireless device could compromise picture recording by interfering with the internal electronics, just like a cell phone would.... The thing is, this is only his 6th feature rent, and none of the previous crews recorded ANY sound, so…

Did anyone read Sunday's Washington Post article about the state of our industry. The article states that movies for "grown-ups" with grown up themes have underperformed lately while "talking toy" movies(Transformers, GI Joe) have done well. Another observation is that only 2 types of movies are making money: big-budget blockbusters and small, modestly budgeted films. I thought it was an interesting read. Any thoughts on the articles points? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/20/AR2009082004479.html?hpid=artsliving

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00m42tw/A_Problem_With_Noise/ This is a great piece about noise pollution & its affects on wildlife & human hearing - and, obliquely, our careers. I listened to this recently and thought it might be of interest to some of you. The link expires pretty soon, so listen quick if you want to catch it. Chris Watson, the presenter, is not only a working sound recordist known for some spectacular nature docs (including 'Life of Birds), but also a documentarian of natural sound that he releases on the Touch label. ...And he co-founded the groups Cabaret Voltaire & the Hafler Trio. If you want to hear some amazing wea…

I don't know how accurate this is.. I suspect not very because it shows low unemployment in the finance sector (which is complete bull). http://www.visualeconomics.com/employment-change-by-industry/ Shows unemployment in the motion picture biz high, with a slight increase in wages (right). -Richard

I want to combine what I have seen emerge in several other threads... It seems to me that "professionalism" among this group of peers might be judged by the equipment we choose to use. As many of you must be aware by my posts, I use a Mackie - it's the 1642-VLZ3 with the newest XDR2 preamps (whatever that means). Many posts here imply that this sort of mixer is not a professional piece of gear, but nobody blinks when someone is using the Yamaha 01v. I'd love to know why the Yamaha is seen as superior to the Mackie. Is it because it's digital? My AD conversion is handled with a Sound Devices recorder and through my RME FF800. The RME unit is a dedicated AD conve…

Hi all, Just got a loan of some dx2040's for a job starting on saturday, and when i plug em in to my 442 the level is shockin i have to turn up my gain all the way and open the fader all the way just to get a good level and this of course brings up a shed load of hiss, i have turned up the output of the R/X all the way and have the T/X set so it is not peaking. Am i missing some thing ? I have tried it in my SQN S4 mixer and it seems to be grand the input from the R/X needs to have the -12 pad put on but no major issues like on the 442. I have been using Lectro's Block 21's recently and had no level issues like the 2040's, infact the lectro's rock. Is there…

We all know the biz is changing.. into what, we'll not be apparent at the moment until we have arrived. But lets face it, it IS coming. There are several undeniable facts that are taking place. 1) Shortages of cash. The titans that run our biz, are simply NOT gambling like they used to. It's partly due to a "wait and see" attitude. This one effects us the most. Bottom line, studios are in business to make money. The studios are looking real close at small budget filming with large eyes. And several high profile low-budget films have just make huge bank for some studios, while several high budget films have simply bankrupted entire studios now. Small budgets eli…

I'm still a student and this may be a dumb question, but recently I got asked to do location sound for a shoot where they're wanting me to mix down 3 lavs and 1 boom down to two channels or (asking my advice) if they should get a 744 instead but without any budget left for a mixer in front of it. My instinct says that having dual 302s linked together and going down to 2 channels is going to work better than recording everything separate (partly as I remember reading that channels 3 and 4 of a 744 are menu controlled so riding them is near impossible). Previously I've just stuck with a boom alone, or recording so far away where we didn't even boom and just ran 2 wir…

Ok, here's the email that I got from someone. --- cut --- XXXXXXXX Productions wrote: > If you come with your own equipment and feel you could do it for $150/day, then you would be able to successfully outbid the person we already have. I realize that's a lot to ask, but I'm just putting it out there. Thanks. --- end --- And here's my reply. --- cut --- First off, This is NOT a bidding war. Your NOT building a house. Your hiring a KEY crew member of YOUR TEAM to work on HALF of your film. Someone who is going into battle WITH you. Someone who sees your dream and your vision, and will assist you on your journey helping you achieve i…

When vocally slating a take, eg: 52e take 1 , is it ok to leave out the (word) take, and just say "Fifty two easy one" or eg: 88a take 1 "eighty eight apple one " or "two" "three" "four" 'Five" etc. This seems to only work well when there is a letter after the number. I was wondering if this is an acceptable practice and if others guys/gals are doing that way? KKS.

How taxes work

How Taxes Work . . .(not an original work, author unknown) This is a VERY simple way to understand the tax laws. Read on -- it does make you think!! Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men ? the poorest ? would pay nothing; the fifth would pay $1, the sixth would pay $3, the seventh $7, the eighth $12, the ninth $18, and the tenth man ? the richest ? would pay $59. That's what they decided to do. The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quit…

On a job this week with lots of playback of stuff I've recorded already, with some edits, beeps etc added. For reasons I haven't been able to figure out, Audacity basically stopped working on my laptop, and no amount of pref-trashing, permissions-repairing, deleting and downloading a new copy of the app etc etc made any difference. If I did an edit of a file and saved it, Audacity would mute after the edit, even though the wfm was still visible. Way weird. Anyhow, with a long prop 'n lighting setup in progress, I remembered that Jeff W liked Sound Studio, so since we had wifi on the stage I checked it out. What I found was an app that works almost EXACTLY like Auda…

My father shot a lot of HDV video on a project and we had it all transferred from tape to Quicktime format (.mov files). The transfer was done by a very experienced facility we have used a lot in the past. Here's the problem: the Quicktime movie files play just fine with Quicktime player but only on some of our computers. For example, they play fine on my 24" iMac (Intel) but do not play on my father's 20" iMac in the office. The audio plays but with a black screen, no image. I thought it could be a Quicktime Pro issue since these are rather large high resolution clips, but the 20" iMac now with Quicktime Pro still will not play the files. Files can be played with VLC (me…

My story is one told to me by my late grandfather... Keep in mind that my grandfather was "man's man" who I always looked up to as a strong, macho person. As a young associate in New York, my father was sent to the Park Central Hotel to request its last remaining resident vacate his apartment for the hotel's conversion to the new Park Sheraton. It was to be the flagship hotel for the company. The remaining resident, who had refused up until now to vacate? Bugsy Siegel. My grandfather told of walking to the door of the apartment, knocking, asking to see Mr. Siegel, and being asked to wait a moment. Then he was there face to face with Bugsy Siegel himself. My gra…
