I know I'm a little behind on this, but does anyone have any feelings about the Disability Insurance offered by EP (Payroll)? We're automatically enrolled in it unless we opt out. On paper it looks pretty good - maybe marginally better - but what is really going on here? Thanks! ---steve nelson

I have been reading this forum for sometime now as a guest, and I must say it has been an invaluable resource I have learned a ton just reading the forums! So here goes post #1 I have a project coming up that requires me to record in a large warehouse ("studio") and the producer and director are expecting it to sound like it has been shot outside. One major plus is this warehouse is attached to a Production Equipment Rental company and I am told I will have access to everything that is not on rental for that weekend for the purpose of treating the room - I think most of the equipment will be at my disposal as there are not major pictures in town. If anyone has s…

Well here we go again, I'm doing a shoot Friday with the RED (Build 17, not sure of the version), and the client wants to record the 4 direct outs from my 442 to the line in's of the RED. Obviously I'm trying to discourage him but he doesn't want to mess with separate audio files in post. So the questions are: 1) Can the RED now be trusted to record quality audio tracks? 2) If I can record audio on my 744T, what is the best way to sync the 744T and the RED? 3) Do I still need to use the attenuator/impedance matching cable SD recommends? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Ken Dabek West End Recording

Soundies, What kind of advice would you have for me in order to get things right in this unfamiliar country? I'm not sure how long the production will be, but there would be a couple of A-stars in this. I certainly cannot bring a full cart-based setup as it's unaccessible and expensive to ship. A bag mixer would be appropriate, but would it be enough? Something like the 788T or Deva's? A couple of wireless and microphones. I'm expecting damp environments so I'm preparing for that. How about hiring a mixer over there instead? Best, Alan

Verizon iPhone Deal More Likely After 4G Launch Friday, April 17th, 2009 at 8:23 AM - by Jeff Gamet Apple isn't likely to strike an iPhone deal with Verizon right now because it isn't interested in making a CDMA-compatible version of its smartphone for the carrier's network. An opportunity for a deal could, however, arise once Verizon's 4G LTE network is online. According to the Wall Street Journal, AT&T and Verizon are both working on rolling out their 4G networks, and unlike their current wireless offerings, the systems will be compatible -- meaning Apple won't have to build two versions of the iPhone. Verizon's rollout efforts are ahead of AT&T's righ…

Hi all this is my first post. Here is this old chestnut where to put a lav on a man wearing a tie, usually in the past i have used a tram in a rycote sticky on both sides and then a rycote fluffy on the outer side and then stick it to the inside part of the gentleman's shirt about 2-3 inches from the tie knot. I have heard about the tie-knot method can anyone else elaborate me on this worried that this method may cause a throaty sound rather than the more natural sound i get from placing the mic nearer the solar plexus. Pics would help. Many thanks Alan

This happened a few months back and hopefully others can learn from what happened here. On a remote location in the Hills of California, our production did not have a full time caterer to handle the craft services / meals portion of our shooting day. Production assistants were utilized to set up the tables and chairs for meals and the caterer simply dropped off the pans of food to be distributed.. Sterno cans were used to heat the food and when breaks were called, crew members would get their food, sit and eat. One day after breakfast, the production assistants were wrapping up the eating area and the hot, used sterno cans were placed into a cardboard box and packed away …

I have an upcoming gig that will be a live Hi-Def transmission uplink of surgical operating procedures. A third party equipment supplier will be providing all the equipment. I believe, along with other necessary equipment, he's bringing a Mackie board, Sennheiser wireless, and four "Madonna type" headsets. I've been told we'll scrub in, so I believe I'll be in the operating theatre. The producer who hired me understands that I haven't done this particular type of gig but that I'm a sound pro and he seems comfortable with that. However, I'm a bit fuzzy about dealing with mix minus feeds, Telos, etc. The crew I'll be working with have done this type of feed many t…

Okay... This is in the general discussion section: I am posting this because we have people of all ages and backgrounds as members of Jeff's great site, and I'm curious how opinions vary regarding how to solve the rise in drug violence in Mexico and in the border areas of the United States. Other countries can't be immune to this either. For me, it seems that for every street dealer all the way to a cartel leader who is killed or jailed, there is someone in line to take his place. It's been that way for years. It will never change, so focusing almost all enforcement on the source seems futile. Legalizing drugs will not stop the competition to produce. If it is …

The source that I have been using for DVD-RAM blank media is no longer carrying the Panasonic discs I have used for years. What has everyone else been using? I have used Panasonic media almost exclusively but on occasion in the past I have used Maxell and TDK. I liked getting the Panasonic (4.7 gb, single sided, non-cartridge) discs on a 50 item spindle since I put the discs into a plastic DVD case for delivery. Any recommendations for sources to purchase and recommended reliable brands would be appreciated. - Jeff Wexler

Hello all. We have finally nailed down a location for the RAMPS get-together at NAB. It is in the same complex we have been in for the last few years, but on the right side as you enter rather than the left. I know the parking there can suck, but is has provided some entertainment over the years, too. Anyway, here is the info: Satay Grille 3900 Paradise Rd, Suite N, Las Vegas, NV 89169 www.sataygrille.com There are menus and stuff on the website, the website kind of sucks in that it only seems to work with IE, but the food looks good, they have vegetarian choices, they have reserved the deck for us, and they really seem to want us. I will be there arou…

I thought this might be an interesting subject for discussion, prompted I suppose by Scott Farr's offer of 10% kickback to anyone who hooks him up with a job. Is this a common, or even heard-of, practice by any of you? It does not offend me, but I guess I think it is kind of strange, so I'm wondering how others feel. Maybe I am off base and this is the norm, so I would like to know. I have referred many jobs to fellow sound people over the years and have never wanted, asked for, or received a finder's fee. I have also never been asked for or paid a finder's fee to another mixer. (I have probably indirectly paid the equivalent of a finder's fee when I did a some da…

YOU KNOW YOU'RE FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WHEN: Your monthly house payments exceed your annual income (and you think it's normal) You drive next to a Rolls Royce and don't notice it. You don't know anyone's phone number unless you check your cell phone. You begin to "lie" to your friends about how close you are when you know darn well that it'll take you at least an hour to get there (see below). Getting anywhere from point A to point B, no matter what the distance, takes about "twenty minutes". You drive to your neighborhood block party. (What's wrong with that?! LOL) In the "winter", you can go to the beach and ski at Big Bear on the same day o…

Hi there, Anyone using the motu v4hd for audio post? Seems like a lot for a little, (sort of) I am looking ahead at setting up to do some post and am wondering what people are using successfully, and what made them decide to go the way they did, without huge expense. Any comments would be appreciated.
