I'm just curious if there are others out there with the original Solice still using it daily. I can't find a users group and haven't seen any for sale in a long time, either. What say you, hive mind?

First of all, I apologise if this topic has been brought up and I believe it has, but I just couldn’t find useful info. If you could simply share some useful links, I’d be very grateful. I was wondering how fellow production mixers deal with round-table-party-like scenes that the camera adopts handheld-doc style to randomly capture characters who improvise their conversation in each take. Some issues boggle me: Would you request the off-camera and out-of-focus characters to pantomime? I find it very difficult to pull this off if the cameraman doesn’t lock his camera movement. It risks that the off-cam miming actors suddenly pop up in the frame …

I went to stock up on it at the drugstore and realize they no longer sell Durapore and it looks like it’s replaced by cloth tape specifically not made with natural rubber latex. I special ordered Durapore rolls but has anyone used this cloth tape for comparison and more importantly should I be sensitive about allergy reactions using Durapore in the future?

This question is about actual bugs, insects, and how to get rid of them when they invade our gear. i am on a feature shoot in Kenya in a reserve and we have many night shoots. Only we did not anticipate that hundreds of thousands of flying and crawling bugs would be attracted by the lights and litterally invade the set. I had to have art department cover the tin roof of the set with blocking fabric from the gaffer to avoid heavy rain noise that the bugs were making falling under the lights to the roof. now when wrapping and packing we can’t get rid of them all inside the bags and cases. I am reluctant to spray insect killing product onto my 888 and all. A…

Read any good books lately? I've had one or two good reads in 2011... Don't have time to read much, but it surely is a perfect pastime. Most recent was a Haruki Murakami book called Norwegian Wood. He's insanely popular in Sweden. I guess mostly because he writes a lot of graphic sex scenes. Didn't like the book. I don't like sex scenes at all. Another pretty good read was a Paul Auster novel called Invisible. And of course I've read a lot of interesting stuff here Cheerio! (iPhone wanted to correct cheerio with Cheerios. Cereal sponsoring in autocorrect? Hmmm...)

I have a list of the walkie frequencies used on set graciously provided by our Production Coordinator . I would like to find a way in Freq Finder or TX Advance to enter these as potential Intermod creators. Is there a way to do this or is this just a pipe dream? Or do I need to take a serious math course? Best regards, Jim Rillie PSM

Has anyone ever bought from this place? They have some things I'm looking for that are considerably cheaper than buying locally in the U.S. but I want to make sure they are legit beforehand.

Seems the Feds are going to focus more on higher Ghz bands instead of our turf of 470-608mhz (hopefully)? https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/National-Spectrum-Strategy.pdf

Dear JWsound members. I'm curious about the development of Ai in film making and any thoughts around our profession being at risk. What do we think will happen to production sound recording in the next 10 years ? Many thanks Greg Albert

Hi Everybody, I am looking for suggestions as to what powered speakers people like for P.A. applications. Recently both my JBL 515 Eons went out. One right after the other. I am now looking to replace them. I liked them, they certainly were clean and loud. They were a little heavy and only had one input, which were minus'. Looking to replace them, I am seeing many different brands offering similar models. I would like to find some that are as rugged, but smaller, lighter but still packing a punch. Open to any and all suggestions. Thanks, Mark.

Hello, I am a film student doing research on sound equipment and I was curious about the kinds of microphones used in motion capture. From what I've gathered, lavs are the most typical method of capturing dialogue in this setting because they can be incorporated into the actors' mo-cap suits. But I was curious if a shotgun microphone was also usable in these types of environments because the actors are surrounded by hundreds of cameras. Does a boom mic interfere with the motion capture process since it is bound to be visible by at least one of these still cameras, or is it still the same principle as a typical film shoot where it just has to stay away from the primary cam…

Just wanted to quickly share a nice experience I had recently. The past few shows/projects I've done have been discouraging to say the least. The sound department was treated as an afterthought (frequently with blatant disrespect) and I was feeling pretty dejected until this most recent show. I got called on to fill-in for another sound mixer on a big budget short. Even though the drive was 3.5 hours from my city, the experience I had on set with the directors was well worth the drive. The two co-directors frequently checked in with me during every setup, told me what they wanted for the scene (foley, ambience), asked the actors to run …

I'm curious what you guys do. Do you include a certain number of timecode generators in your package rate, or do you charge extra? Thanks, Tom

A little note on running the set. Set belongs to the boom operator. It's their domain. When I place a mic they notify operators, set dressing and/or props at the right times. Boom operators of note keep the boom mic away from the mouths. They protect everyone, including me by being conscious of where the mic is pointed 100% of the time. They know who to ask for what and where these people are all the time: operators, set dressers, on-set props, AD, the sound-friendly electric / grip. What else?

Hello, all. I can't seem to find this topic on the forum which is odd because I am told this is a known issue. I bought a used HME xmtr from a dealer a year ago and haven't used it a great deal until now and I am discovering that if I just tap the plugon xmtr in a tabletop it looses power. I have to open the battery door and close it and then it powers back on. I can also wack my palm against it and get it come back on sometimes too. I have tried alkaline and rechargable cells. Same thing. I perceive nothing loose inside the battery compartment. Please direct me to a thread that tells me how to fix this or just tell me how to fix it. D…

Help me hive-mind... More and more, I'm hearing young directors and DoPs using the term "money-shot" for their favourite take. Now, my old man old school brain seizes every time, as I have always associated that exclusively with adult film production, and I'm thinking every time that other's on set must be feeling uncomfortable (or not?) I know words and phrases evolve over time... But did I miss the 2023 memo on this, or is still a phrase associated with adult film? There's still no way I'll use it on set, but should I just chill because I'm the only one who notices?
