Hi folks, I just thought that I would share a timecode bug that we found last week with the Build 21, althought it might have been on some earlier builds and I had not yet run across it. I was using one of my Denecke SB-2a sync boxes on the Red last week ( partly becasue of the smaller footprint ) and on the first day we could not get the camera to power up with the TC box connected and we assumed that there was just a glitch with this body. Abel was able to send an other body down on the first day although it was a build 20. After testing different cable sets, we tried an other one of my SB-2a's with the same results. Then we tried my SB-T and bingo, no power up is…

I think the subject line says it all. I was recently sworn into the union and am looking to start doing more scripted work. If you have anything coming up, and are looking for a utility, I would love to get working. I'm also happy to just visit sets to meet face to face. Too adversarial?

Are we too adversarial in our posts in this forum as someone once stated? What are your feelings on this? I personally don't think so. Does it get heated occasionally? Sure, but that's what keeps the menu from becoming stagnant. No malice, I feel, is ever intended.

Worked in CBS Radford this weekend.. We were mostly filming outside shots. They gave me 4 wireless frequencies that were just about unusable, and I've never seen so many Planes, Jets, and Helicopters fly over an area in all my life. Gawd, how does anything get filmed here? I had 5 planes in one take once, and 2 Helicopters come out of nowhere, fly round the studio in a circle, then fly in another direction.. Do they do this on purpose? WTF? -Richard

We can sometimes get a bit adversarial in our posts, but I would like to relay a nice story I heard recently. During a hiatus of a current TV show, a producer went on a rampage, replacing almost all of the below-the-line crew. This replacement was to include the sound department, with no real reason or justification. How did the mixer find out? The production called another mixer asking him to send over a current resume. That mixer called the mixer who had been on the show previously to find out what was going on, as opposed to simply letting production proceed with hiring him as a replacement. Turns out there was nothing really at issue with the sound departmen…

Just conducted a camera test today (I was there for work flow consideration). 35mm - 16mm - RED (new chip and build 30) - a 4th option might be 2PERF 35mm camera which is having some kinks worked out. All have HD monitoring. This was for the benefit of the studio, and RED was used on the directors' last film, but they were not happy with it, but did like NOT cutting between "takes". There was LOTS of "Oh - wows" going on in terms of exposing to the max before clipping a sunlit white wall, day exterior, with plants and such in shady area, and a subject walking from sun to shade. They claim an improvement of 2 stops. Robert ** No sound was sent to camera *…

Hello All I just watched Star Trek and in the scene in which Kirk is on trial for cheating on a test, there are Blue Mouse Microphones on the stand; does anyone know if they were used to record or if they were just props? I'm curious because the dialog sounds really good to me! Cheers!

Why doesn't the editor work properly? This should be BOLD on my screen. Well, what do you know, it IS! You have to know to use the button at the end "A" to toggle the view. When toggled it goes from wysiwyg display to displaying the codes. Good to know.

Hello everyone this is my first post on JWsound. I am a NYC based sound mixer and been at it for about two years. I roll with two Lectro's w/ Tram tr50's and i always find myself fighting clothing noise, sometimes having to readjust them between every take. I've recently tryed sewing in pouches which has worked out ok, but still end up with a little crackle here and there. On the job i'm on now we also have two sony emc mics which clean up much much easier. So basically if anyone has any tips or can lead me to any resources, your help would be greatly appreciated. Best, Brett

Anyone have success mono mixing dialog that is very tightly scripted with 3-4 wires? With all this talk of a "Mono Mix", and me being mearly a fledgeling to this business(6+yrs), I have taken on the task of practicing this craft. I have always tried to multi-track when I can. In fact, one of my first jobs was with the Deva-II. I have even run multi-track to several cameras in order to give iso's. But lately, I have been attempting Mono-Mixing. I had a gig recently that had 2 talent, wired, doing a comical piece. The dialog was very tight and the fader moves needed to be lighting fast to avoid phasing. I tried to flip the phase between the two, but it never seems to sound …

Hello all. I've been working on a shoot with the new Sound Devices 552 and the RED and I have noticed two things that are bothering me. The first is with the RED. It seems like every time I work with this camera, it behaves differently. This time when I send in tone from my mixer, it comes in well below the hash mark yet when I'm testing dialogue levels, the levels start to clip well below the hash marks. It seems to just jump to clip when visually it looks well below the marks. The other odd thing is, changing the line level between 0 and 10 db doesn't seem to do anything. So basically I'm having to visually observe where my levels are comming in on my mixer to wh…

Has anybody here been flying with gear since new regulations? Any first hand problems with Lion batteries. The rules are on the books but from my experience(pre Xmas 12009) they are not enforcing them. Sorry if this is a redundant question from :Regulations gone wild thread but that strayed too far from the original topic. Or i was too ADD to sort thru the multitudes of threads. If so i apologize. john.

Every time I look at one of those commercials the audio/lips are never on sync. I'm guessing they mean to do this on purpose or either I'm tripping and it is all on sync. Just seen another commercial and I knew it was one of their commercials before it even stated Everest because the of the people talking and their voices did not match their lips. So either they where just playing scenes of them with a voice over on it. IDK. Anybody else see this or is it my tv/and or me? Nicole p.s. Located in Atlanta, GA

I just experienced the kind of tech support we all want. I own five different G-Technology drives. Three of the Mini bus-powered 250GB drives that I use for archiving my Deva folders. A 1TB drive designed for my Mac-Mini and a back up drive for my Mac that sits at home, a 250GB G-Drive. The 250 GB G-Drive I purchased in June of 2008 started to fail, so I contacted G-Tech support and off it went for repair. Any new drives you purchase now have a 3 year warranty, but mine was not eligible so they offered to repair it for free with a 30 day warranty. They called me with in a week to tell me they got the old drive working but were concerned that it would fail again. Jus…

I'm just about to start prep. for a 3 month doco shoot in India, departing in mid-March. We'll be starting at the Southern end of the country and making out way North over that time. I've never worked out there before so I'm hoping that anyone who has worked there could share any advice for protecting and working with our equipment in both the humidity and heat of the south and the cooler temperatures of the north. I'm going to keep my enquiries fairly general at this stage as we have no itinerary tied down yet and some shooting details need to be finalised too, so any general points of interest and information which might make my time there easier would be very muc…

A strange thing has happened. I renamed 2 files on my 788t. Easy enough. The new file names had a "+" before the scene number because they replaced existing files with same name. I can locate and play these files back on the machine no problem, but the CF card and the DVDRAM were both missing the files, replacing them with alias versions which could not be played and were zero kb in size. Stranger still, when I hook up my mac to the 788t and look at the files, I also only see the alias versions and cannot play them or even "get info." Attached is a picture of the files from the main internal drive. Any thoughts?

During World War II the Army Corps of Engineers needed to hide the Lockheed Burbank Aircraft Plant to protect it from a Japanese air attack. They covered it with camouflage netting and trompe l’oeil to make it look like a rural subdivision from the air. View the photos in the link, fascinating. http://thinkorthwim.com/2007/08/19/1034/ RL
