http://www.mysuicide.net/ I haven't seen this movie yet, but I keep hearing about it. 1) Created for the YouTube Generation. Completely refreshing way of making a film. 2) Speaks to young people about a serious problem, with a great message. 3) David Carradine's last film. - (the Irony) 4) Got large funding from Harold Ramis's group. 5) And like a true indie film, we may never see it because as of now there's no distribution? This my friends is what the dream is all about! -Richard

It's been a while since this whole White Space issue has come around. Have people using the 700+MHz wireless units experienced any real affectation from this? I see lots of 700+ lectros and such for sale, and I know it's "only a matter of time" issue, but has this really affected people on-set yet? I'm in Blocks 21 & 22 for the time being, and those have big chunks taken out of them in LA.

Worked my first Canon EOS 5D Mark II gig yesterday. I think that I saw a topic here once before. Some interesting notes about the shoot. - Weird to see a SLR in place of a camera. In fact, the ADP called it 'almost silly'. - They had an entire grip package around the camera. - Video out of the camera sucked. The DP could run AV video out or the mini-HDMI plug but not both at the same time. So we had a low quality feed going to video village. It kept getting interrupted because the DP wanted to try to look at the cameras 'real' colors on the internal monitor. They had planed to run out to a 21 inch computer monitor but that didn't work out well. …

Hello everyone, If there are any 52 members planning to attend the vote on Oct 13th, I would be thrilled to have your support. I have recently been informed that the ballot lists my legal first name (which is Lamar), and I am a little concerned that this is going to throw a fair number of my potential votes. Thank you in advance. I look very forward to joining the local. Best, Wyatt Tuzo (Lamar Tuzo on the ballot) www.newnoisesound.com

This might be a weird question.. How does one, "turn a show"? For example, I might be signing on to work on a horribly low paying TV show pilot.. And lets say someone on the sound crew (cough, cough) drops the dime to the union about "going union". How does one do this process? Doesn't the production get pissed, you loose your job if they find out (not a huge deal really), the company closes up shop, moves on under a different title, etc?? I've never seen this discussed here as far as I know.. Yet, many people say this is encouraged and preferred way to go union. Thanks -Richard

Assessments of the relative effectiveness of government and private enterprise often proceed from the untested assumption that one group is inherently good and the other inherently flawed. Here in California firefighters have been battling several forest and brush fires that tend to spread rapidly in dry conditions prevailing at summer’s end. The largest of these, the Station fire, has consumed over 250 square miles of forest and has been burning for more than 30 days. It is now about 98% contained according to officials. Although it has burned primarily in wilderness areas, it has consumed 89 homes, threatened thousands more and burned scores of other buildings. Two…

If it's a success, we lose the 10pm primetime time slot to Leno, Letterman and whoever. That's 15 episodic tv shows a week gone, which translates to losing more than 2000 more production jobs in Hollywood.

When I was moving up, I was given an opportunity to mix a second unit on a top 10 TV show produced through Disney. I was told I must reclassify to Y-1 to get the job, as this is strictly enforced by Disney, or at the very least by the mixer. I felt I was ready to make that commitment, so I reclassified. Shortly after I was offered the utility job on a different top 10 TV show, with plenty of double-up mixing days, including entire episodes. This was a HUGE opportunity and a financial windfall, being one of the few shows left that paid the full daily rate, as well as a Y-4 upgrade to the utility person. Shortly after starting the season mixing a double-up episode, …

I was trying to purchase the Trew Audio, Boom stand - but they have discontinued it due to manufacturing cost increases. Although I like the original version made by Randy Johnson, $400+ is a little more than I want to pay. Does anyone know of an alternative brand or someone else that is making them? I know I can build one myself, but do not have the time or inclination. Thanks, RL

I'm sure you guys notice this all the time.. I myself, didn't understand this, until I got on a few (shall we say) higher league films. When I was on several sets with A-list actors, most all of them have made it a point to go around the set, introduce themselves, and shake your hand. At first I thought this odd.. I mean, I'm nobody, just your below-the-line sound mixer... but the more I thought about it, the more it makes since. The truly professional actors know that "the crew" makes them look good. The make up, the camera, and even the sound... Not meaning to add to the gossip here, but I found this "open letter to Megan Fox" funny. Not only can they make you l…

Good article in L.A. Times that discusses who is actually benefiting from all these tax incentives and rebates offered to productions around the country. It has always been by contention that the primary beneficiary has been the mega-media corporations who will produce their product wherever they can get the best deal --- it may be Michigan this month, just as it was New Mexico last year and Canada before that --- they will continue to chase the deals but where does that leave us? http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-ct-moviestates22-2009sep22,0,5945570,full.story - Jeff Wexler

I'm looking over my IMDB credits and want to update it. I've gone through their process but it keeps rejecting the credits that I put in. How can I get past this stage and get credit for these shows?

I must admit this is probably not a post that can be noted by most of us here, but I do know there are some good Brit mixers on this forum. Do you have any stories, anecdotes etc about the great series produced by Granada in the 80's? Most of the episodes (hour plus) are truly great - well directed, superb acting of course and excellent location sound - i can hear the Nagra and 416/816 at work! Truly wonderful to be able to revisit what I used to wait all week in 1988/89 to see. I found a download of the entire collection - it was not available anywhere on DVD. Someone probably had transferred the stuff from VHS to avi... I was out of school and graduating in …

I know this is one of the more trivial discussions and we have talked about this before, but how many still put 2 beeps at the end of the take? For most of us who have had a lengthy career working in analog linear tape and transfers to mag film, this was an important part of the process. As we all know, in the non-linear file based world, the audible end beeps have lost most of their significance --- when the take is over and we stop the recorder the file has come to its end without any need to identify this point. I still put 2 beeps at the end, mostly out of habit but it does still serve the purpose to let anyone else listening, script, director, boom operator, know tha…

Does anyone else do this? I often let either my boom man or my utility guy sit at the board and mix an occasional scene with not too much dialogue in order for me to be able to count on them to step up in the event that I'm late for work, incapacitated or for some other unforeseen reason. I think it's essential that all members of the sound crew know how to do each other's jobs. Whether I'm breaking any union rules or not I maintain this work ethic and it's come in handy quite a few times, especially when there's a good movie on in the craft service truck! TIC! Regards MIck

Question for yall. Has anyone here ever turned down a job because it would put you and your equipment in harms way? Have a job offer that would require spending a majority of the day chest deep in Swamp water amongst hunters and poisonous snakes. My main recorder is the 788t which is rugged, but not on the level of the Cantar. Got a taste of the job the past two days and found out from the talent that the previous sound guy had a break down on the set along with other drama caused by the producers (Example: today did a 10hr day and the producer didn't feed us, nor did he offer an apology. Thx

Yesterday I was watching iCarly with my youngest son. A commercial came on for some flying toy showing kids outside playing with this thing. Immediately after the commercial was over, my son turned to me and said, "Oh my gaud.. that was so fake!! Their mouths didn't even match what they were saying, Dad!". Needless to say, I too noticed it, but didn't say anything. He totally noticed that the kids talking while playing in the park didn't match sonically. Yes, sir.. a proud day in a fathers life when your 8 year old, recognized a BAD ADR job. -Richard

Hi Guys Can anyone please give any advice regarding the concealment of Lavalier mics. I am about to undertake a series where the mics will be concealed under clothing. The presenter's style is to wear a shirt, without tie, top two buttons undone and a wearing an open suit type jacket. The shoot will be heavily reliant on radio mics and shot mainly outdoors with two other contributers involved. I have been doing some tests with concealing mics with the above attire in mind, but I am having no success to say the least.... clothing noise and rustle being a real problem irrelevant of where I place the mics and what type of mount and wind covers I use. The mics in my k…

Hi All I have a shoot coming up with an Arri D21 digital camera, the video assist people tell me they have a Behringer Shark for me that needs to live on the cart and be powered with AC. The purpose is to dealy the audio sent to comteks and video village by 4 frames so that it syncs with the slightly delayed picture. My question is, is this common practise? First time I've been asked to do it... And would the audio being 4 frames ahead really noticeable? All my gear powers off DC right now and I would love to not run AC to my cart just for the Behringer delay line.. Seems like a PITA and another bit of non pro gear that can go wrong and create headaches on set. …

I have a shoot coming up that may be with the Arri D21. Never seen one of these and just wondering if some of you have experience with this beast and can mention any potential pitfalls? From what I can see in the user manual (as I drift off to sleep here..) there are no TC or audio inputs/outputs on the camera body.. Is it usual to record to separate decks with these? I will only discuss this with production tomorrow but thought I'd tap the knowledge and experience here to hopefully prepare me for that. Hope everyone had a god weekend:) Jon Chiles

Hey guys , Client has forced me to capture audio to his CANON VIXIA HV30 consumer brand cameras. I have the right channel from my harness cables connected to the supplied XLR to mini 1/8 audio input cable on each camera. I have noticed that when listening to my returns A and B (while recording) I can hear sounds originating from the headphones that are stabbed into the headphone jack on my harness cable at the camera end (this is for the camera operator to listen with). It's like they are a microphone! I thought that maybe it was because the headphones that were being use by the camera operators were powered, but I swapped them out and it still is happening.... Cameraman …
