In honor of today's 4/1 holiday, NYTimes scanned its archives for weird stuff. This story appeared in its pages November 20, 1910 (link to collection: https://nyti.ms/2FNwvO8) --- A Dog That Talks. He’s a Setter and Demands Cakes in Good German, It Is Asserted. BERLIN, Nov. 19 [1910] — The scientific sensation of the hour in Germany is the talking dog Don, a dark-brown setter belonging to a royal gamekeeper named Ebers at Thiershutte, near Hamburg. Don promises to become as celebrated an attraction as the horse Clever Hans, which startled the zoological savants of Europe eight years ago with his alleged mathematical feats. K…

Has anyone had a similar experience ? I was using a UH400a as wireless boom (416 w/ 48v) with a bag system (rx just 1 to 2 feet from tx) without any issue.... ...until the vehicle reach around 90 - 95 mph , then I received a very fast chattery and constant interference. The same bag system was using a UM400a with a lav without issue at any speed. Both rx are 411a . Unfortunately it is not easy to duplicate the circumstances for testing. Anyone ???? Jeff

Just caught this on another discussion group: http://www.aes.org/sections/pnw/laws.htm Oh, there's a couple of dozen there that apply too well to the movie business. They're funny, but some are sad and wise as well. "When operating in the vacuum of a studio, time moves faster than anywhere else in the Universe." "No matter how fast and effective an audio engineer works, to the paying client it's like molasses." They left out a couple of my favorites (which apply to all of life, not just sound): Sturgeon's Law: "90% of everything is crap." and: Teslacle's Deviant to Fudd's Law: "If you push something hard enough, it will fall over." And anoth…

I saw a photo from Scott Farr where he had 8 wireless mic receivers, 2 transmitters to camera and a IFB transmitter in a bag. Never having worked with such a large system, I am wondering how this would work without the RF energy of all the receivers and transmitters interfering with each other.

So, we work with these people all the time, but once in a while you hear a really surprising fact about them. Perhaps we can start a thread with this tidbit of information. Dolph Lundgren has a master's degree in chemical engineering, was a Fulbright scholar at M.I.T., speaks seven languages, was an elite marine ranger in the Swedish military, and is a third degree black belt in Kyokushin karate. Too bad he's such a shitty actor. Robert

I run into this a lot but never when I'm the boom operator for another mixer. The situation comes up when I'm the one mixing, so I haven't gotten the opportunity to see how other mixers approach this. Specifically, I'm wondering if actors that are bunched together and speaking at the same time force any changes in the way you would record their dialogue. This would also fall into multiple speakers having the same dialogue spoken at the same time. For example: Bill, Bob, and John simultaneously say "I hate taxi cabs. Jinx!" Or something similar. I recently had a show where the 3 actresses were speaking into the camera with the same dialogue at the same time. I …

I have hear many "stories" about for "per episode rate" here. According with Greek labor law and unions that it doesn't exist. It's only "per day" or "per week". The actors/actresses it's different story. Many "productions" here offer "per episode" rates and not "per day or per week". Be careful my friends because here we are "laboratory animals" for the "future labor and how it paid". In one episode you can work for 4 days. In other episode you can work for 10 days. It's not the same for rates this. So be careful.

Does anyone know if a TC reader can read TimeCode that was recorder as an MP3 file on one of the audio tracks? And if so what would be the lowest MP3 setting that could be used? They want to email these files for transcription. Thanks Kriky

Hi peeps, I had this gig last August where I was hired as Production Sound Mixer. I filled out all necessary forms including the 1099 form correctly. Surprisingly, I got an e-mail from the producer stating that I will need to give her my Fed Tax ID. Sure I can give it to her, but I never operated under a company name then. I'm still working as a freelancer, but what do I do under this circumstance? Alan

I came across this online hearing test. It's on the University New South Wales site. I've been concerned about my hearing 12kHz and above since I had a double ear infection a couple of years ago. It gives me some idea where I am, but I still want to get a thorough hearing exam. Does anyone have a good audiologist in L.A.? Rich.

Ok so I was updating the spreadsheet I use as billing guidelines when working up quotes and realized it has been sometime since I have bid or done a sound job for a sports related show on the national level. Can somebody who is in the know send me a pm with an idea of the current range that is being accepted by networks and the dp's working for them. Nothing extravagant 1 or 2 cam interview and presser type stuff.

Dear all, In a little under one months time my family and I are relocating to Los Angeles (my wife’s hometown). I’m very much hoping to continue and advance my career as a Production Sound Mixer while there. What I’m looking for is advice and any hints and tips to help me out for when I arrive as towards looking for work, pitfalls to beware of, pro’s and con’s on union/non-union work, any help really. Also, any contacts for general hanging out and talking shop, and possible crew contacts would be appreciated. Feel free to post on thread or email me off-forum. Thanks in advance for your help Best, Jamie Gambell

Hi all, I just bought three IDX NP-7LS Li-Ion NP-1 batteries and I can't charge them on my non-IDX chargers. Please help if you had any similar experience. When new they came at 14.3 - 14.4 volts. I used them down to 12.5V approx in order to fully charge them for first time but I can't. Battery documentation states that the discharge protection is at 9.5V so I don't think that's the problem. I just used them on my recorder as any of my other non-IDX batteries down to the same point. My other batteries and chargers are all Proctor and Bray brand, from UK and never had a problem. It could be that IDX batteries need a different charging sequence only found on…

Rented a machine yesterday and thought I changed all the settings to the correct specs. Turns out I somehow over looked the timecode frame rate. First time in 28 years. I believe there is a program that will convert timecode frame rates. Need to convert 30 to 23.97. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.
