"How much does it cost to commute to work or drive across town? The price of gasoline is posted at every corner gas station, but what about the cost of driving on electricity? The Department of Energy’s eGallon provides a quick and simple answer to this question and allows electric vehicle (EV) drivers to see how much they can save on fuel by using electricity instead of gasoline." A good point to remember: it's not all about the cost per gallon or the cost of an eGallon. "The eGallon price arms consumers with a little bit more information to compare the costs of driving an electric car to the cost of gasoline, but it doesn’t measure some of the other benefits of …

I would like to get some input from other mixers on how they monitor their mixes in the field with your typical 2 channel camera job. I have been monitoring in my headphones in a mono (mix) fashion and I feel that it is becoming a bad habit. It forces me to ride the faders harder to compensate for the comb filtering & physical phasing effects of multiple mics coming together. I'm constantly concerned about the mix (mono) picture because I don't trust that the editor will use the split tracks or just summ it all to mono. I have been working some of the reality circuit where we have 2 channels and anywhere from 6-15 cast members to mix. All of the fellow mixers I h…

Curious to hear reviews on DSQD in the real world. What are mixers finding in terms of reception and range? I have heard in NYC they are marginal at best on the street compared to Venue systems.

I must admit this is probably not a post that can be noted by most of us here, but I do know there are some good Brit mixers on this forum. Do you have any stories, anecdotes etc about the great series produced by Granada in the 80's? Most of the episodes (hour plus) are truly great - well directed, superb acting of course and excellent location sound - i can hear the Nagra and 416/816 at work! Truly wonderful to be able to revisit what I used to wait all week in 1988/89 to see. I found a download of the entire collection - it was not available anywhere on DVD. Someone probably had transferred the stuff from VHS to avi... I was out of school and graduating in …

Is there anyone amongst our members here who would be able to help me in putting together a high end video editing system for son. I jave put together many systems in the past but I am not totally up on some of the latest products. I am very clear on the host computer which will be a Mac Pro (as full blown as we can afford and will be using Final Cut Pro Studio 2) but not so clear on some of the other necessary components. Important items in the class of things like the recently mentioned MOTU video interface (not shipping yet) which compares favorably to the Aja io/HD (also not shipping yet). Contact me directly if you really know this stuff. Source material, at this p…

I had the distinct pleasure of being on set last night, on the final production day of MadMen, with Production sound mixer Peter Bentley, whose last day was yesterday. What a nice guy, and good luck to his endeavors, after 25 years in the business.. -Richard

I'm mixing the supplemental materials for a film and have an interview coming up that will feature the composer of the movie. It's a face to face format and the composer will have an acoustic guitar. The company I work with isn't usually averse to having mics in some shots. I'm wondering how other people have handled this situation or if anyone can point examples? I figure my options so far are to: - Just let the boom pick it up - have a second mic planted lower out of shot - visibly spot mic the guitar

Curious if anyone has done as i am not sure how much time i will have to experiment. Its for a 360 tour in a noisy environment and i will have to rig up and go. Considering double lav, one traditional hidden at chest and one hidden in top foam of shield and allowing prod to go with best of the 2. Anyone with any personal experience and pitfalls i should watch for?

Hi all - I am having my first go at producing a film. Total budget for production is $75k. We have not raised any money for post or festivals or anything. We are shooting at a friend's parent's house in Fairfield, CT. He is the writer, and producing along with me. The director also co-wrote and is a friend. We are flying as a group of friends out to the East Coast and staying in the house where we will shoot 8 or 9 of the 12 day schedule. We have a single camera from Chivo's DIT, who is also showing up for free to help out (the DIT, not Chivo himself). Another friend has lent a sprinter van full of G&E gear which we're driving out from Kansas City. I am b…

Here is a link to a movie that I did all the production sound mixing. I also did all the dialogue editing and the majority of the post audio editing. Some additional Foley, a little more sound design, and the final mix were all done at POP Sound in Santa Monica. 99.9% of this movie was production dialogue. They changed the dialogue on two lines and had to ADR those but otherwise it all came from the shoot.

Thank you Jeff for posting the invitation to the camera local's screening of "WHE NEEDS SLEEP?". The documentary was informative and entertaining. I spotted some cameo's: Jeff, Moe, thought I might have seen a Don. It was most interesting to listen to the discussion afterword (I spared them my babbling search for eloquence). There were high ranking reps from the camera union participating in the discussion. Haskell Wexler and a producer friend were moderating the Q & A session. It seems know one has any solution to achieving shorter work days for the film industry here in the states. Is it really so, that in some parts of the world they ONLY work eight or ten…

Just saw the series "Band Of Brothers" An amazing series, one that I couldn't stop watching. I couldn't imagine what Colin Charles had to go through during production. A truly amazing accomplishment! Sincerely, Eric Lamontagne

Hi, My wife and I are taking "a brief vacation" (homage to de sica!) to Rome and Paris, before I go to Grenoble... It will be truly great if I can meet up with fellow sound people in both cities. I am in Rome 13-16th June and in Paris 18-21st June. As of now, I am struggling with trying to find places to stay in both cities - pouring through the thousands of holiday apartments and b&b - any recommendations will be truly helpful, since it is quite a jungle of these places in both cities, it is truly very difficult to figure out the reality before experiencing it in person! warmest regards -vin +91 9930903737 vinod@soundtrane.com

I think the subject line says it all. I was recently sworn into the union and am looking to start doing more scripted work. If you have anything coming up, and are looking for a utility, I would love to get working. I'm also happy to just visit sets to meet face to face. Thanks a ton, Wyatt Tuzo 917-518-8302 www.newnoisesound.com email: my first name @ my above web url

Greetings, I may be a bit off topic for this group... But I know that a lot of you people in the broadcast industry will probably have a lot of knowledge that might help our project. Our company is working on a small remote controlled robotic video camera that would be used by law enforcement agencies to inspect under vehicles. (Like automobiles.) We have been prototyping with a 100mw UHF TV transmitter that can be switched from CH 21-28. We have tried many other transmitters including 900MHz band, 2.4GHz band, 5.8MHz band... But all these devices fail miserably because the transmitter antenna has to be about 3.5 inches off the ground. (In order to fit …

I've still yet to not get paid for a job, but there has been a time or two where I had to press to get a payment. My friend mentioned this service to me and it seems like it might be worth it to have around in case someone feels like they don't have to pay for a job. http://www.legalshield.com/corp/ A letter from a lawyer holds a lot more weight than a call or email from me. I called and for the basic personal plan of $25/month it allows for 2 letter or two calls per year. That's not a lot, but it's also pretty rare to have issues with payment anyway. Thoughts?

I seem to remember a thread on this group about 6 months ago, to do with being able to make an audio waveform that when viewed in a spectral view on a DAW would show a graphic. I seem to remember that someone made the jwsound graphic 'sound'. I cant find that thread, and have run out of things to search for in the search box. Can anyone point me back at that thread please, or does anyone know how one goes about doing that trick? Many thanks indeed, sb

Just curious, is there a thinner version of the k-tek coil xlr cable available on the market? I'm actually trying to DIY a internal cable into my Ambient boom pole, but the first segment of the pole is just too narrow for a k-tek coil to run in smoothly, resulting in excess at the bottom, and i cannot keep my pole fully. and the connections to the xlr plug at the bottom keeps breaking:@ or should i just buy a proper k-tek boom pole since the connections keeps breaking.
