Heard this on the radio yesterday. Had to search for it since it didn't get much play in the Chicago papers: http://stlouis.cbslocal.com/2013/09/26/camcorder-battery-causes-fire-aboard-stl-bound-airliner/ The article mentions a "camcorder battery". Hoping that means some cheap consumer battery vs. something we might use. Not mentioned in the article, but heard in the radio report was the fact that the crew put the battery in a bucket of ice-water. Wonder if they are trained to do that, or it was just instinct on their part. Water wouldn't help with the fire, but maybe it would cool the cells down below the point of thermal run-away.

Anybody know of a rental house in Hamburg Germany where I could rent a boom pole. The airline seems to have lost mine with my luggage. Thanks.

I am renting my HVX and accessories out to another shooter and I've requested a Certificate of Insurance. He has sent me a PDF of something called an "Insurance Binder." It looks somewhat like a CofI but I've never seen one before. Is it the same? What should I look for in order to be covered? A.

How do I insert a take into MovieSlate's shot log history if I forgot to roll the app and need to add a shot before sending a sound report?

It all started when my new cart mounted stereo transmitter (Used for IEM) developed a frying sound on both outputs. I started to to use a belt pack Sennheiser one in its place. Being mono I lost the use of the private line so I had to use the slate switch to call speed. Pressing the switch in either direction (Position 1 or 2) introduces a 10Khtz. whistle into the system making the audio impossible to hear and loosens the wax in the directors and scripty's ears. I'm convinced that it's 10k as it's exactly like the 10k ref. tone on the mixer. Any 106 guru's got any ideas as I'm loosing my voice having to shout speed and I'm getting that jaundiced look from video vill…

Peoples - New Legal query.... If the project is non-union, I usually opt to invoice as a corporation and stay off timecards and away from Payroll Svcs.. I've got a booking next week - and the company is telling me I have to go through their payroll service as it is required unless I have my own worker's comp insurance.... I do not. (I once did when I had a larger staff, but it is rather expensive and difficult to deal with for a small business) I offered to provide a document to them to indemnify them from any possible worker's comp liability (from me) - and now I have to find one / make one!! 30yrs and going, I've never made an insurance claim, eithe…

Hey all, I'm new to the forum but have been lurking under the radar for a while reading old topics and keeping an eye on what's going on.....I'm thinking of starting up my own freelance business in this area and would like some advice if anyone would care to help. Sorry if the post is a little long. I live in Derry, Ireland at the moment, and want to set myself up as a freelance production sound mixer/engineer/boom op to work for anyone who might be in the area filming documentaries, films, working freelance for the BBC etc...as well as getting my own jobs with my friend who is also setting himself up as a camera operator. For example, we could hire ourselves ou…

Hi everyone at jwsound, First ever post woo! This board has been a massive resource for me in the last 2-3 years while I've been getting my recordist chops up and I thought it was about time that I said hullo and possibly ask some questions of my own (maybe even contribute to discussions every now and then). Just a quick intro about myself and then I'll leave you all alone I've been building up my credits list since 2010 in a variety of roles, doing the rounds in Melbourne, Australia, but I think, in 2012, I'll bite the bullet and concentrate on sound dept, it's a dept that I enjoy as you are part of the on-set crew, and it kinda provides a nice symbi…

Dear all, I recently watched "Barton Fink" (Coen Brothers-1991), pretty much by accident : I found a box of old DVD's on the street a few months ago and I'm watching them one by one without looking up what they're about beforehand. 2 min into the film I smiled a broad smile and thought "wow, this is why I love sound in film". Not very surprisingly, the sound supervisor was none other than Skip Lievsay. I thought of the following : I would like to start a thread which compiles a list of great-sounding films/series/can even be specific scenes. This could be for whatever reason : technical, artistic, because the dialog sounds so perfect, because…

from: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-35709680 Dave Lee North America technology reporter 3 March 2016 Inside Medium: an attempt to bring civility to the internet On an internet full of hurried, scruffy ballpoints, Medium is the web's fountain pen. We're told our attention spans are short. That we cannot focus on anything beyond 140 characters, or without lists accentuated by quirky reaction gifs. And yet Medium somehow manages to fend off this trend - encouraging the construction of a coherent argument via, primarily, long-form writing. The site is not built to reward clicks, but…

So, I'm sitting here watching Wipeout getting some good laughs from the many crashes, hits, and spills, but am curious as to how they went about wiring the mic in the helmets from the wet conditions. It looks like they're using the Lectro MM400c's or similar on the back of the helmets to deal with the wet conditions, but for the abuse... I see a lot of direct hits to the transmitter and wonder how many of these units they go through in a season lol?
