Hi all, Thanks again for starter package equipment advice last week. I've been asked to do a corporate/industrial shoot ; 10-15 full days spread over 3 months. The business part is new to me so any "rate" advice will be highly apreciated. I'm in Toronto, Canada. Here's what they need from me for their 1 or 2 camera shoots: 4 CH ENG mixer Shotgun and Hyper on boom 4 Wireless rigs All additional basic gear:cabling, power, etc. Backup audio to my Tascam HD-P2 I can handle pricing a basic setup, but how do I quote on 4 wireless units? Do I do a basic rate quote for typical gear including 1 wireless, and quote an additional rate for each additional wireless?…

i just watched the movie bird man (michael keaton, ed norton …) i really liked the score it was mostly 100% drums, only a couple moments used just some strings … being a drummer i really appreciated the drums score & i thought it worked really well for this film, i haven't heard drums used this much in many movie scores, especially when the movie content has nothing to do with drums … the drummer, antonio sanchez (who's played extensively with pat metheny for years) did an excellent job … it seemed like he really worked hand in hand with the director (Inarritu) to get just the right sound… sanchez experimented with different drums and tuning / de-tuning, as well as a …

I was just catching up on my copy of Mix Magazine from June and came across the Lectrosonic's April Fools gag "Lectrosonics SM-Shaque Battery Eliminator" made their "New Sound Reinforcement Products" page. The brilliant editors of Mix Magazine probably believed this was legit! Now I'll doubt everything they print from now on.

having recorded it, not ''really'' listening... i find it now a bit ''trancey'' i have now retired. i have recorded from abba to zz top and even performed with both from my dear, dear , missed friend bowie to orchestral beethoven at least, for me; music is as i like and ''too hell'' with ''in a monastery garden'' that i grew up with holding a thorn in between my teeth to get stereo from my 78's!

...and I found this. I'm probably not going to buy it any time soon, but it's so beautiful I had to share it. Reading the specs, it only takes .wav and .flac files. Any thoughts on it? <http://www.colorfly.eu/product_index.html>

According to a report in Variety, the cry babies at the three networks are upset that HBO won so many trophies in the Mini-Series category. They swept all eight longform awards. So rather than get back into the mini-series business and seriously compete, they'd rather banish that category to the Creative Arts night, or create a separate "Mini-Series" Award to play on HBO. http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=Emmy&articleid=VR1118023530&categoryid=2161&cs=1&cs=1

My boys love this movie, and I've seen it several times with them, along with The Incredibles. WALL-E is on ABC Family right now, and I still can't get over how stunning the sound design is. If you haven't seen either of these movies, I highly recommend them. Not only are they fantastic sounding movies, they are extremely well done overall, and fun.

I am a huge fan of the TED Conferences and TED Talks. For those of you unaware of TED, a brief description: TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader. The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes --- often longer!). Most all of these TED Talks are archived by the organization. Link to TED: http://www.ted.com/ I recently watched a fascinating presentation by Evelyn Glennie who is a world renowned percussionist and mu…

Hey all, So I have been thinking about joining CAS and wanted to query the current members out there. It seems like a cool organization, focused on education and recognizing our fellow soundies. I'd also love to connect with some more post-sound heads in NYC and thought this would be a great opportunity to do that. Yea? I am curious about dept designation. On the application you must choose either production OR post-production sound. I happen to do both, but have found myself gravitating more towards post over the past few years. I wanted to see what the consequence, if any, there was to picking one over the other? I have my five years of confirmable credit…

tried asking this question over on ramps, but got few responses... can anyone tell me generally what type of cloth/clothing makes the least amount of noise? or maybe the most amount of noise? for a small project coming up i need to rely heavily on lavs and the director asked me if i could recommend what kinds of fabric the actors should wear. i told him cottons are generally pretty good, especially if they are on the thicker side. any advice? -greg-

Hi all A project I spent just under nine months recording last year is finally about to start screening here in Australia; Wednesday 15 August 2012. It was a dream project - single camera, DOP (and outstanding guy) Greg Kung and myself. http://ten.com.au/video-player.htm?movideo_m=123560 .

So what I want to do actually is run my daily applications off my USB drive or iPod. And I know that PortableApps suite can solve the problem, but partly. Because applications like MS Office and Adobe seems not portably available. So I want to know if you know some virtulization software or any other way that I can run almost all applications off a USB drive or iPod, I know it may sounds a little uncommon but I just need it. Can you help me?

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/04/12/the-hobbit-48-frames-peter-jackson/ Peter Jackson posted on Facebook that he was shooting The Hobbit at 48 frames-per-second. Now it makes sense how they are going to shoot and project visually. I wanted to find out how are they going to record sound so that shooting in 48 frames will match. I have a few ides how it wouldn't matter but I wanted to find out if any of have heard or has this been found out already how to approach this. I figure it wouldn't matter because if it's shot in 48 frames digitally we also record digitally so timecode is not the issue but frame rate is my question. What do you record it at? Is it 23.98 24, 25,…

So I get a call this morning from a new to me client who got my name from a colleague for a job for tomorrow. We spend about 20 minutes on the phone discussing and negotiating rates and equipment and come to an agreement. Client says will email me details later. Around noon I get the email, some details and an attached 6 page Independent Contractor Agreement. Yes, I've dealt with this in the past and with my current clientele it's extremely rare. I review the document, and like most, there are plenty of clauses regarding indemnification, liability and arbitration and hold harmless agreements in there that I do not like. I don't have a team of lawyers but I know en…
