A couple of great boom ops and old buddies of mine that have just signed up. Matt gave me my first job in the film biz in the late 80's as a set dresser, I didn't much like that, and Doug helped me get started in sound. We've played in bands and worked and partied together for the last 20 yrs. Welcome to Mr Wexlers forum. LL

I was just stumbling around the net and ran into this Ted talk which I'd not seen before. Pretty basic for most people here but nicely encapsulated and makes us sound recordists think a little about the job of sound designers.

Today I fired up the 552. It was set at 00:00. Midnight. One might expect SVEN to say "Twelve AM" or "Zero Zero" Right? I could have sworn SVEN said "Bewitching Hour." I punched it again. "Bewitching Hour." Sound Devices Easter Egg?

Hi! My first post here I'm going to Cefalu in Sicily in a couple of weeks doing a reality show. I will be using up to 6 Sennheiser G3(a-band) systems simultaneously. Has anyone been working on Sicily using G3(a-band) systems? Or Lectro block 20-21? about the same frequencies. It would save my day if anyone knew. Thx!

Just a test to see if this video embed works. One of 27 live musical scenes we did in 1974 on Bound For Glory.

Hello, Today an incident occured while filming that inspired this post. The scene is; a woman helps an injured police officer into his car (passanger seat), runs around to the drivers side and peals out. Simple right? Sure! The kind of scene that both my Boom Op and I agree that a "flag pole" solution is the thing to do (play it safe with reflections) So the only problem is that as soon as she hits the gas, she also turns on the siren ripping our heads off. Ouch! I ripp of my headphones, franticly pull the fader to 0 turn around still in severe shock and find the peanut gallery at video village laughing their tails off. "how was that for sound, ha ha" Now l…

My good friend and fellow sound man D'Marco Ray died this morning after a long battle with cancer. He was a pleasure to be around in every way. He gave years to his country in the service, he was a self made success, handsome, charming, funny, professional and ethical. To have met him was to be his friend. He is truly missed. Only the good die young.

Last Saturday night I responded to what I thought was an example of another bad ad of looking for somebody to work on a festival bound film and only paying in credit. I mocked the post by writing about wanting to paint a house for free to also enter in a contest. Guess it was a real post for a job because the post has been wiped clean of this board. Was I wrong for showing how asking for credit pay work in another field, seems so wrong. This business seems like the only work where a lot of people seem to think that working for free is the best way to get ahead. How long can you survive giving your work away for free and pay for a place to live and pay for the equipment th…

A last-minute job in Nepal just came up requiring a recorded live translation setup. Many years ago, I did a similar arrangement in sit-down interview scenarios that didn't require recording the live translation. Inelegant at best, using a Shure FP22 headphone amp, a desktop PTT microphone and a couple of Comtek 72mHz systems. The Nepal job has asked for a verite solution. Literally, a walk and talk, as well as a sit-down interview arrangement. Like a roving "UN translation" setup. I'll have my SD 633, two Comtek 216mHz systems and Lectro wireless mics with the possibility of one Sony wireless system with a headphone out, along with two Sennheiser …

Hey group, I'm curious about setups that people have found successful with live studio audiences, whether it's sitcom, or imrpov (Chappelle Show) type shows. I'm curious about how you capture audience laughter, within the show, and what you do to try and separate the laughter from the performances. Also, do you place speakers for the audience to be able to hear the performance better, and if so how do you make sure to have minimal bleed from speakers to audience mics. Just curious, I might be working with a setup like this soon, so I'm just wondering what the pitfalls are, so we can try and be prepared. Thanks everyone! Phil Rosati

First a caution...Geek factor is rather high on this one. In celebration of the "100 Hours of Astronomy, April 2 - 5" here is a link for the audio folks in the room. They hooked up the output of the Lovell radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, Manchester UK and recorded some very interesting sounds. This is their "jodcast" with two of their resident radio astronomers. I enjoyed it... http://tinyurl.com/c25nlz For more info on the 100 Hours of Astronomy. http://www.100hoursofastronomy.org/ pwp

Pretty cool: after training with wide angle images + sound from artificial stereo head + mono sound, a deep neural learned to - generates binaural sound - isolates sound sources from video+mono audio alone. See https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.04204 http://vision.cs.utexas.edu/projects/2.5D_visual_sound/ This is only the beginning... In the future you may imagine, for example, an AI that focus/extract the relevant sound when you zoom in a high resolution image in post, etc.

This is kinda weird for me but I'll put it out there in the community of my peers. I have had the unfortunate luck of having three project go away this year for different reasons; it has become a VERY slow year for me and I am feeling the pressure of being unemployed for as long as I have been. Probably more than a few others have had their dry-spells but I feel a little scared at this moment. If any of you, especailly West Coasters, get an offer for a project that you can't do because you are working (or even better, taking vacation!), and if you feel comfortable, would you mind refering your producer to me for one job? I have a wonderful team; we are really good…

Amazing article on House of Cards's on set workflow. Hope this inspires producers and directors alike to start working together (camera & sound!!!!) and use technology to create a better working enviroment for everyone on set. Kudos to HOC team and David Fincher for making this big jump! http://www.local695.com/Quarterly/summer-2015/7-3-house-of-cards/

Hey Everyone, It seems like forever since my last blog post but I've finally published the next installment! http://soundrelated.com/a-day-at-the-tibetan-opera/ Here you will find me recording Tibetan Opera in the mountains of McLeod Ganj, home of the Dalai Lama and exiled Tibetan government. As always the recordings are included in the post. I'll bet you haven't heard anything like this before! You may also notice the site has undergone a major facelift, so feel free to have a look around and let me know what you think. Enjoy!
