Backup recorder? 1 2 3 4
by Jeff Wexler- 81 replies

Bear with me on this. The question goes out to all those running a second recorder concurrently in production where one recorder is considered the primary recorder and the other a backup. I am not interested in stories from the DAT days or when two recorders are being used to facilitate different format/media or copies for deliverables. What two recorders are you using and what incidents or circumstances have you had to go to the backup recording on a job? I know I probably could have put up a POLL (if I knew how) which would have been easier, but I like the free form answers from those who are willing to write. - Jeff Wexler

Here's a recent one. TV commercial, VOs with an actor were done at a hotel room after wrap. Got an email from the agency via producer a few days later: "The speech recordings from the hotel room are mono, not stereo! How can this be?" Do you have some funny agency folk stories to share? EDIT: changed the thread name to more accurately reflect the great contents of this thread!

I was on set of a commercial shoot doing run and gun production sound mixing this past week and I hit quite a snarl. As soon as I arrived I was asked if I had slate. There was no mention of bringing slate on our prepro call and this marked my first experience of being expected to have one without previously talking about it. The producer, DP, and AC all looked at me in agreement and said, "sound always brings slate." I felt bad beside I couldn't refute on the spot, but now that I've researched I can't find anything on the subject. I would assume either the AC or whoever is renting gear would bring it. So does anyone here know who brings the slate? New p…

Question, How often do you use EQ while recording dialog on location? If you do, is it to enhance the dialog or more to cut out some unwanted frequency. Using a low cut filter doesn't count as most will use it to cut the low rumble. Thx

Anyone out there know anything about the Aaton closing? As a Cantar owner curious what these means for those of us invested in the product. I remember when Transvideo bought them in 2013 and thought things were going well. Then again it is such a niche market. Thoughts appreciated. David

Maybe I am just being to sensitive but in the last few weeks I have done 3 jobs, 2 commercials for major companies ( though they called it a "corporate video" when hiring me since they were directly to various favors of HD Camera) and a spot for a major politician. On all three jobs I found out that hair and makeup (Which were two separate people on each job) all made more than I did. On both "Commercials" I made $500.00/10 with gear and on the political spot I made $650.00/12. On both commercials the make up women made $650/00/10 plus kit fee. Hair made $550.00/10 plus kit fee. On political spot both made $600.00/10 plus kit fee. Each job had different hair/ make up peop…

I' recording a 6 part series currently. Young actors, a great director and supportive production team. Last night I received a note from the editor advising me that I should have used radio mikes for a scene and not a boom so she could split out the actors! I guess she never worked in the days of the 4.2 Nagra. Next it might be advice to the DP saying he should have used a different lens and more back lighting!!!!!!!!!!! Oh dear! mike

It's come to my attention that those who come to narrative work from other specialties are unaware of some basic set protocol. Thought it might prove interesting to share our collected wisdom in that regard. Cables are run safely, along walls, behind gear; flat, no clotheslines; cross walkways with other cable runs when possible/practical at a 90-degree angle. The "whether to tape or carpet cable runs" discussion will be conducted in due course I feel sure Do not place your gear in such a manner that it will block access to somebody else's gear. If you open a case and have to walk away from that case, lock the lid first. Borrow something? At end of us…

I normally do production sound but work has been hard for me to come by in the past month so I set out to do a post production project of my own to keep myself busy. It's better if you just watch it without any explanation. I'm curious to hear what you all think. What do you guys do when you aren't working?

Many times I mention something very generic about gear and the discussion gets very heated. So I decided to just list all my complaints at once and be done with it. Will start with ZAXCOM: 1. 3V lavalier power only. I like 4063 but also other DPAs!!!!! 2. Nomad only has 6 AES when used with zaxnet. 3. No limiters on AES on Nomad. 4. Maxx released without zaxnet control and still does not have it. 5. SSMA is expensive, hard to find in a hurry and honestly fragile. 6. Lemo 3 Pin is time consuming to wire and repair... . not an issue with DPA DAD adapters 7. Mix-8 does not have enough control 8. Mix-12 has the control but does not work with Nomad. 9. ERX 3.…

This issue has come up 2 times in my limited career as a sound mixer. I'm going to give you guys the scenario, my theory, and see you any of you agree with me.. or not. So, here it goes.. While on set, I find myself interacting alot with script supervisors. I feel it's both our jobs to keep things organized, and we have to make sure both of us are on the same pages (so to speak) in making sure the scene and take numbers are correctly written and called. A few years back I had an older scripty lady that has been in the biz for 20+ years. After a few hours filming, we had a false start where we cut after 1 min, and we saw NO SLATE. Both the sound and the camera…

When asked "How do you feel about the new digital technology?", he responded with "I think it's strength lies in the ability to multi-track. I prefer to not provide a "production" mix on my shows. I preferred to monitor a sum of all mics and then let the transfer man do the dailies mix in the transfer room" This struck me as very odd. There is one person I have worked for that still does this and it has always bewildered me. Was this common back in the day? Do you suppose all tracks were ISO's and there was no "mix" track, and Chris just monitored this way? I cant imagine this takes place much anymore. That is some heavy pressure on the mixers shoulders to let someone…

Hey all, My Honda Odyssey has had a lot of issues lately and is getting into higher miles so I'm starting to look at other car options. I got the mini van before I got into sound and was still in camera and g&e so the big van let me take a lot more stuff than I usually roll with nowadays. I'm hoping to go to something smaller and more enjoyable to drive like a VW Golf Sportwagen or Subaru Outback, either of which would be a nice driver and have a good bit of cargo, enough to fit my EuroCart even. Curious what other people drive. Do you have Transit vans or similar? If so is that basically your daily driver? Feel free to post pics of loaded gear!

What's with guys that are afraid to boom? When they boom it's more like a pointer than running full stick over head. I'm on a show now that the lead audio (should be A2) barely booms, when he does he might as well just be using the pistol grip. Trust me, production knows it, he won't be back for second season, I will. Meanwhile I'm over talents head on a 9' stick. He will never put both arms up in the air, boom is always at an angle. Me, I boom with both arms straight up. Reality and multi-track has created some lazy bastards!!! I black list these guys but WTF?

I'm not 100% what I want to have on my business card. Of course my name, number, and email, but I am not too sure what I want to be labeled as. I plan to put a focus into Production sound, but don'e want to feel like i'm limiting myself to just that. Can anyone help a brotha' in this dilemma?

Title says it all. I just want to be protected in case something happens, theft, fire, etc... Whether in my house, car, or location. Who do you use? How much do you pay for what kind of coverage? Have you ever had to use it? Thanks!

I am faced with having to do a scene in a manner which I know is not the best or the right way to do it. Actress who does not play piano, sits at a baby grand (muted), pretends to play and sings live. Piano music is supplied by off camera keyboard person, taking visual and audible cues from the actress, playing the music on the electronic keyboard. They want to do this without cue aid (silent earpiece) and play "piano" music through a speaker on the set. Not being able to talk them out of this, I am on a search for a digital piano with a really good baby grand sample and a speaker that will as faithfully as possible, reproduce that sound on the set. I plan on pl…

I seem to have an increase in calls from producers calling me for half day of work- The call usually goes something like this- 'It's only a couple of sit down interviews shouldn't take more than 4 hours what's your rate for just half a day? What do you guys think of this- I often feel that if I book a half day then it's not as though I can take another gig to fill the other half of the day and so I should be paid a full day. These gigs have pretty much taken me out of the loop for the day anyway.

What was your greatest mistake (if you want to admit to it) and what did you learn from it? I learned, from someone else, you should ALWAYS record away from a power source!but from my own, I'd say always have a back up for a back up and batteries.

Some of the videos these folks make have been mentioned in some thread or other, but I feel the website should be mentioned here. Awesome if you have some time to spend and like music. And of course a testament to production sound http://en.blogotheque.net/

I could really use some advice here. I interviewed to mix a feature, where about half the scenes take place between a mother and her two small children. All three of them have lines, the children are the woman's real children and are non-actors, and the mother is the director. At the interview, we talked about my gear, schedule, budget, etc, and the four producers basically told me that laving the kids would probably not be an option. I told them that sounded reasonable as long as I can boom and/or stash mics. They said OK. I got the job and I show up on set the first day, and the first thing the director tells me is that I can't boom the kids, because they…
