Follow carts 1 2 3

My efforts to make my main cart smaller and lighter have put additional strain on my follow cart. The main cart used to carry 2 fishpoles, almost all the mic cable needed and most all of the microphones in the drawer. Now, the main cart has all the recording equipment, the wireless receivers, Comtek xmtr, very little cable and rarely carries the main fishpole. I am going to build a new follow cart and I have a question to all, but specifically to Crew C., about the follow cart. Crew, is your follow cart basically a rolling set of drawers? This is the direction I am going... just curious what others are doing.

There has been a lively discussion, mostly on r.a.m.p.s., about wireless fishpole work. Much of the discussions have taken as a starting point the new Zaxcom TRX 992 boom box (we all know what that is) but have talked about other ways of accomplishing some of the same things without the 992. Lots of people have provided descriptions of how they haver been booming, wirelessly, over the years, usually some combination of Lectrosonic transmitter, Denecke power supply, Lectro or Comtek IFB, etc., understanding, hopefully, that the TRX 992 provides features that are not even available with the other systems. One thing that was brought up, and this is actually my question, i…

Between here and facebook there is a regular flare up about people undercharging for equipment. While there are some places that post their rates, or offer price lists/books on request. It's not trade secrets, and most of this info is scattered throughout the site, but sometimes hard to find because it's a tangent to another thread. Does anyone object to this? Ignoring the camera houses that give gear for one day weeks, it seems to make sense for everyone to be on the same page. Those camera houses hurt sound rental companies as much as they hurt us. When a producer makes a kit request with a crazy low price, it would be an easy way to counter with a price that's fa…

I tried searching for a topic on this, but the few topics there were are more than 5 years old, so I thought it would be ok to start a new discussion. I'm a female looking to get into location sound. I've been browsing these forums for a few days now, and I noticed most of you appear to be male. Not a problem for me -- I'm used to being surrounded by men as most of my interests are male-dominated fields -- but usually I see a few other girls. So, I'm just wondering if any of you or female, or if you know any sound girls. What do you think about being a woman in this field? (Whether you're a woman or not, I just want to know what you think/observe). I guess I'…

The union will not post here nor do they read this board. They are mired deep in fear and paranoia. So this is from me (free form all fear, paranoia and obligations as I am no longer dues paying): The Commercial Contract has only two Pay Scales for Local 695 members. There is a minimum call of 8 hours but most folks work on a 12 hr guarantee (higher than the minimum). The current classifications are: Sound Mixer...... .......$66.33/hr Boom Oper....... ......$44.78/hr Sound Utility...... ......$44.78/hr VTR/Video Playback... .$44.78/hr The 44.78 rate goes up to 45.68 on Oct 1 2011. For 12 hr 44.78 x 14 = 626.92 that's 4 hr at 1.5 time ( the deal…

I want to combine what I have seen emerge in several other threads... It seems to me that "professionalism" among this group of peers might be judged by the equipment we choose to use. As many of you must be aware by my posts, I use a Mackie - it's the 1642-VLZ3 with the newest XDR2 preamps (whatever that means). Many posts here imply that this sort of mixer is not a professional piece of gear, but nobody blinks when someone is using the Yamaha 01v. I'd love to know why the Yamaha is seen as superior to the Mackie. Is it because it's digital? My AD conversion is handled with a Sound Devices recorder and through my RME FF800. The RME unit is a dedicated AD conve…

So I am in a rock and a hard place. I just had a great month but am not sure if there are anymore of those ahead. I must upgrade my wireless along with other parts of my systems. My worry is if I spend money to get the gear now then if no gigs come in I will have to sell them right away but then if a gig comes out of the blue and I have to rent then I lose a bunch. When did you guys make the decision to buy gear outright. Did you allow for a cushion to buy it or did you take a risk and get it? BTW I also need advice on navigating this site. The search function is pretty bad on this site and I hate asking questions that have probably been asked before. Tim

I am resurrecting the Zaxcom Users Group forum that I started many months ago. I am doing this to help Zaxcom out and to provide a real Users Group --- not a substitute for Zaxcom or Dealer support but a forum for those using or anticipating using any of Zaxcom's incredible products. It will be a very simple forum discussion group structure without all the levels of categorization that sometimes makes these forums difficult to navigate. The forum is not up yet but I will post the URL when it goes live and everyone will have the chance to register and participate in this group. I need to work out some details with Zaxcom so that Glenn Sanders, Howy, Colleen and the r…

Location Sound Mixer, new to the forum. Question regarding a written agreement for the production of a Reality show. It contains this clause: "Producer shall have the right to request, and you agree to provide to Producer or Producer’s representative a written, catalogued inventory of all tools, equipment and supplies you supply, if any. Producer is not liable for loss or damage of such tools, equipment, or supplies as you provide." I'm providing all the sound gear, of course. I don't know that I've ever signed an agreement that the production company has no liability for equipment damage. In this particular case, the reality star is known for tantrums and irratio…

Alright, i know there are a lot of discussions about this but i read them all and still have some questions. Basically i would like to hear from people who uses the SRa not for a camera hop ( which i have plenty of experience with ) but in the bag/cart setup for talent. Let me give some background in order to show you what i need as infos. I am currently running 6x Lectros UCR411A/SMa block 21 with a 788T/CL8 in a Pegz2 bag ( about to explode ). The 411a are running thru a custom built antenna splitters system that use two 8 way Mini-Circuits splitters and two Lectros UFM50 block 21-22 amplifier filter. THis is feeding two Coax dipole flexible antenna. I make r…

Anyone have trouble focusing after a few days of boom only shots? I haven't had to put a wire out in three days and I'm starting to feel useless with the boom fader sitting at unity for hours on end.

Once in a while this question comes in mind when shooting corporate films, documentaries etc. Sometimes I see lavs mounted on a shirt, coat on news items, documentaries etc. What are you thoughts about this? When to decide to not hide a lav and propose to the director to not hide a lav?

I'm not talking about movies you put on on purpose, although these might be in your DVD collection, but I'm talking about when you're channel surfing and come across a movie you just have to watch until the end, no matter how long it's been on. For me, "The Shawshank Redemption" "Independence Day" - shameful look on my face

I'm heading to NAB this year for the first time and thought it would be great to get some input from those that have went before me as 'thing's to do'. Having never been to Vegas, this list is not meant to be solely limited to just which exhibit booth's to check out, but anything at all that I could do to pass the time during my 7 day stay. So, what say you? What is the best way to make use of a week in Vegas for NAB 2012? What should I bring? Business cards? Camera? Sunblock? The wife? Cheers!

I saw a movie tonight, big budget movie from about 15 years ago, and there's a scene where the love interest of the main character is chasing him out of a party to get him to come back inside. As the poor, tiny actress is running in heels across grass, you see her wireless pack with a big black thigh strap slide right out of the little dress and right down to her ankle. There it was. Not for a couple of frames, but at least a full two seconds as she ran up, until they cut to the reverse. It is of no fault of the sound mixer, of course, and knowing that there MUST have been video playback on this film, it's odd that this was the chosen take or the only take available…

The future of lav'ing 1 2 3

I am curious to know what has changed with some of you out there still working during these times. It seems apparent that boom(s) only might be the standard moving forward and lav's may be used only when necessary, and even then, must be somehow sterile and applied without sound mixer personal space invasion. I could be totally wrong. Local production companies here are collectively working on safe set protocols for the future work to come. Sound/Makeup/wardrobe are on the front lines among others. Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere already. I feel the recent major investments I made in the sleekest lav'ing technology may be grossly underutilized for the next 6 to…

Socialism vs. Capitalism: Which is the Moral System 1 2 3

Thought you might enjoy this read. Socialism vs. Capitalism: Which is the Moral System C. Bradley Thompson Throughout history there have been two basic forms of social organization: collectivism and individualism. In the twentieth-century collectivism has taken many forms: socialism, fascism, nazism, welfare-statism and communism are its more notable variations. The only social system commensurate with individualism is laissez-faire capitalism. The extraordinary level of material prosperity achieved by the capitalist system over the course of the last two-hundred years is a matter of historical record. But very few people are willing to defend capitalism …

I'm looking for some advice. I've not worked with this producer before and we've been in touch for quite a few months now about working together. She told me that the pay is $250/day, and it's a 3 day commitment. I did not ask her for a kit fee and provided the equipment I'd be bringing by her request. After reading the script I let her know that for the 3rd day we would most likely need at least 1 wireless system for the car scene. I tell her I could rent one for $50, and she responds that there is no room in the budget for the wireless. Then I recommend maybe renting a plant mic, (I was thinking a sanken cub perhaps) you could rent one for under $25. She responds w…
