Why Dante? 1 2 3

I'm starting a new topic, an off shoot of the thread started by Richard Lightstone: "Future-Proofing Deva to Dante Network" because I think the topic brought up a lot of related issues and was somewhat disingenuous with its faux concern for the future of Zaxcom and the Deva. There is a rather extensive discussion on this topic over on the jwsound on facebook group and my conclusion after reading all of that regarding Dante support is this: for the sound mixers who are using the Yamaha and needing to utilize all 16 (main) inputs and output busses to feed the recorder (any recorder) digitally, Dante would simplify the cabling and be a more elegant and straightforward me…

No, it's not like "going postal", I am having solar panels installed on my garage roof. I am working with Solar City that provides a really good solution --- a solar lease which requires no money up front, they do all the site evaluation, system design, City permits and full professional installation. Once the system goes live, I start monthly payments of $55.00 on the 15 year lease period. Solar City is responsible for all the equipment and there is a performance guarantee from them. The system they use keeps you connected to the utility grid (in my case, Southern California Edison) and produces enough electricity during daylight hours to meet the demands of my power u…

ISO's vs. Mix Track 1 2 3

I was just curious how important you all think the mix track is? I work for a small production company and have recently been thrust into being the PSM, which I am happy with as it is what I have wanted to do for a long time. Traditionally we used G3's into a Zoom F8 and recorded a L/R mix with the ISO's, but as the person who also does post audio I would normally through out the L/R mix and just mix with all the ISO's we recorded (this was also before I was the PSM myself and was more of a Grip). We recently were able to make a big purchase and completely upgrade our sound gear to include Lectro SRc's, SSM's with COS 11D along with a MKH50 to go along with our 416. I was…

In what by now qualifies as annual ritual, evaluate, re-evaluate, research, conversate, cogitate and take action to up my game. Thanks to all my pals for your invaluable experience, input, feedback and advice. This year, find myself satisfied with the bones of the operation (mixer, recorder, wireless), and it's been my plan not to change too much in that regard until the control surface dust settles into something I can invest in that meets my needs. In the meantime, I'm left with finesse and deepening layers of failure anticipation with an extra R1a here, and various small maintenance projects (the GVC has gone off to Germany for tightening) there. First …

I thought at first when I saw this that Gabriela was doing that thing we all said we should not do --- riding in the trunk of a moving car. I looked more closely and I think the car may actually be being towed but she is still in the trunk. http://cinemasound.ning.com/photo/car-scene?context=latest - JW

I have looked to see if this has been discussed, and I cannot find anything... so, I will ask the question. When and why would you use a capsule instead of a boom/shotgun microphone? When I bought my CMIT5U, I also listened to a CMC4 41... and I really didn't like the way the CMC4 41 sounded at all. So, I bought the CMIT... I use it everywhere, and love the way it sounds. I, personally, find it to be extremely versatile. But, I feel like I may be missing the point somewhere. The CMC6 41 seems very popular. Is it simply a matter of preference?

I don't know about you guys, but reading all of these forums is making me ill because of the horrible spelling and grammar that is being posted. I don't know if it is an influx of non English speaking people or the auto correct (and lack of QC) on their smart devices, but either way it is surprising that so few people proof read their posts before they post them. Ok I have said my piece, I won't bum you out any more.

As some of you might now, I am a re-recording mixer. Do any of you know why some projects suffer from extreme explosive ess-es? When you see the waveform, the ess-eh can be as loud and louder than the rest of the dialog. Is there anything I can pass in to the location guy to prevent thus?

Hey guys, I'm re watching all the Star Trek TNG episodes (my friend got the DVD box set), and I'm wondering if anybody knows anything about the location audio on that show? What mics? Did they use lavs? Etc. A lot of the shots sound distant (suggesting boom) but sometimes I just don't see how you could get in there and boom it with the low ceilings. Also found a picture of a fisher boom on set: Anything info would be great!

Dipole Antenna 1 2 3

I will soon start a TV shoot where interviews take place in a car, with the participants in one car and the the technical crew placed in another car following just behind. My question is: Will a dipole antenna improve reception performance from my UCR 411?

Morning all, General question for yall. When mixing a movie do any of you still run a line a line out to boom? I ask because I'm having difficulties on the show I'm on now. It's drama via screams and yells followed by whispered dialog. When wireless I've got the gain on the Lectro SM set to 0 and when a particular actress yells, she pegs the unit and I'm getting distortion. The only solution I've found so far is to bring out the old 200 foot snake and run a hard line to the boom, then control gain on the 788t. I just ordered an adapter cable with a higher resister values to try an help the issue, but in general do many of you guys still hard line? I love the sound of ha…

Is this a good idea? Are there any legal problems behind it? It has been almost 3 months and I have not received a 4 digits payment. I think if we start collecting information on flaky clients : First we can avoid them, Second they might start actually paying. Please do not attack my idea. I am a little angry while writing this. Have not got paid a good amount of money. And also have not worked since the elections ended.

I just found out the RX900s no longer have a backlight feature. This is a big bummer, to me... I'm already on night shoots, with my new system, and it definitely seems to be an impairment, not being able to see my receiver panel. Wondering if anyone else is feeling a little bummed about this?

Hello everyone, I have an upcoming shoot of a corporate video consisting mostly of employees of a small company briefly presenting themselves to camera, one at a time, never in a very big shot, probably standard MCU, also no moving around. All heads of dpt. have met the client when we visited the location and the general attitude is moderately conservative, so my first concern at the moment is regarding the placement of lavs on non-professionals. I have experience doing it with actors or relaxed non-professionals, but the fact that we will need to hide the lavs is making this particular shoot a bit more challenging. I have seen photos of what people will wear,…

I just went for a massage today and discovered that I am really tense in my shoulders, legs and lower back. I have to attribute at least some of this to wearing a heavy sound bag, being on my feet for long long days, and standing for long periods booming on doc/reality type shows. Also a boom op friend of mine is just recovering from a herniated disc. All of this made me want to ask : How is this work effecting your body? And What ways can we employ to try and stay healthy physically and not get injured?

It looks like the FCC will be auctioning off the bandwidth above 600mhz after 2016. Sennheiser has posted more information and a petition to provide compensation from the wireless and broadband companies that will end up with the spectrum for the replacement of radio mics in those affected blocks. Let's protect what bandwidth we still have. If you don't already have it, GET YOUR FCC LP LICENSE EVERYONE!!!! http://en-us.sennheiser.com/spectrum#sthash.30fN22ZR.dpbs

More and more often, I am encountering producers who tell me that they've "never heard of a two person sound crew (let alone a 3 person one with a utility) and what do I mean that narrative shoots need a boom operator? Am I not talented enough to do my job?" etc. etc. etc. Are other people encountering this? What do you do in a situation like this? How do you let them know about the importance of a boom operator-- and unfortunately no, the AC analogy doesn't work.

I saw this Craig's List job for a sound guy.. no pay, and they said this was for 'your reel'. So.. I don't usually respond to those ones that are so overly ridiculous. And being the a-hole that I am.. I decided to drop a note to this person. Sometimes they write back, claiming that I don't know what I'm talking about, they've been in this biz for 6 months, and know how 'Hollywood' works.. it's a great laugh sometimes.. so here's what I got. This is a compilation of back and forth emails. --- Me: Your aware that sound mixers, don't have reels, right? Producer: So what would you show as an example of your work? Me: How do you view an Electrici…

I am doing a little informal research (for a possible article) about the "sound reel." When I started, no one ever asked for a "reel." Now I see it all the time. Is this a new phenomenon? Is it only low budget? How often are you asked by a producer to give them your "reel"? I have a couple of rough theories of how it started if it is indeed recent. They include students being taught incorrectly and getting people to work for low/no pay if they can be convinced that a project is good for their "reel." To go a little deeper about why this interests me, I feel that a "reel" has little value in most contexts. If someone asks for my "reel" I'm just going t…
