Anybody know the difference between "free run" and 24 hour run" on the 788t? I know "24 hour run" syncs to the clock for time of day, but normal "free run" can do that also. So, what is the difference and which should be used? Thanking you now

I was tempted to write about this topic yesterday. As you know I am an opponent of the current government health care bill that is being negotiated in Congress. I am totally for reform of the system with good regulations but not a government takeover. In other threads going back almost eight months ago, I suggested that the passage of "Obamacare" would be the deathblow to the Motion Picture Health Plan that we currently have. Thank goodness that my favorite entertainment blogger, Jonathan Handel of Digital Media Law tackled the topic with this: Baby You Can Drive My Car: Hollywood Health Plans May Have to Pay “Cadillac Planâ€ Tax Hollywood unions have long barga…

Every time the Award Season begins I always think about the articles that will appear in Variety and major newspapers on the Motion Picture Academy's nominating process determined by the preferential voting system. "If you'd like to sound smart and fancy -- single transferable voting. The process was selected in 1936 and has been in use ever since. It starts when the members of each branch select their five favorite performances or pieces of work in order of preference for their category. When these ballots arrive at PricewaterhouseCoopers, they're sorted by hand according to everyone's first choice. In order to be deemed nominated, an artist or movie must receiv…

I recently did a shoot for a fictional episodic web series. The cast members were all women, and when it came time to get them miked up, I asked what had personally worked best for them in past shoots. They all said cleavage/bra mics. Lately I've had good results with hair miking, but none of them were interested in trying it out. As far as negating how to put on each mic, I just played it by year with each actress. As you may already know, I've been doing location sound here and there for a couple years, but this shoot was the first time I've set up "bra microphones" (forgive me if that's not the best term for it... the term "cleavage mics" seems worse somehow). At…

Who has worked with the sony f35? Any audio sync problems? Getting a 2 frame offset between audio and video. Also, the camera won't read the video sync on my Ambient Lockit box when the deck is off the camera.

G'day, I'm heading over the pacific for a skiing holiday; and am stopping in Vancouver for a little bit to catch up with some mates. I've got a few days spare; and aside from doing touristy stuff - i was wondering if any local soundos would be interested in meeting up for a drink. I'd also be very keen on a few set-visits. So, if anyone's working; and would be happy for me to stop-in for a few minutes, it'd be great to see how you get it done on the other side of the world. I'm in town from the 20th until the 31st of January; before heading off to Sun Peaks, in the interior of BC. cheers, Ian Thomson ian@thompsound.com www.thompsound.com

Has anybody here been flying with gear since new regulations? Any first hand problems with Lion batteries. The rules are on the books but from my experience(pre Xmas 12009) they are not enforcing them. Sorry if this is a redundant question from :Regulations gone wild thread but that strayed too far from the original topic. Or i was too ADD to sort thru the multitudes of threads. If so i apologize. john.

I heard that there is going to be a new stage built near Santa Fe. I grew up in SF,NM and I still have some family there. I wouldnt mind spending some time back home and It would be great if I could get some work while im out there too. Matt McGowin

I never saw "Public Enemy" at the Cinema, I was curious to hear how it sounded in the comfort of my own home, without the expectation that a visit to the Cinema brings, I was in disbelief at some of the dialogue, my main thoughts were what a waste of a Movie to have dozens of lines lost..... As posted before some very strange choices. Kindest Regards Brian

HARLEY DAVIDSON FACES STIFF COMPETITION FROM JOHNSON MARINE WHO INTRODUCES A NEW LINE OF MOTORCYCLES At a press conference late Monday, the CEO of Johnson Marine, makers of Johnson outboard marine engines and other recreational equipment, unveiled a new line of heavyweight cruiser style motorcycles designed to compete head to head with industry leader Harley-Davidson. Peter Long, Johnson brands marketing manager said, "We have studied the market and determined that Harley, while highly successful, has narrowly missed the mark when targeting motorcycle buyers". Long added, "We at Johnson are convinced that our product hits the target dead center and promises to dra…

I've been watching Mandy like a hawk this last year (desperate for work), but there's always some post like "no budget need crew". I mean.... I really don't understand this, or how people with their own gear get by with this kind of expectation (if they're actually working these?). I feel I've done my fair share of freebies now, and since investing heavily into gear to work larger and more professional jobs I find it aggravating as hell to see expectations like this. Am I alone? Why would anyone with their own equipment go work a gig for 8+ hours for free? How do you more seasoned mixers deal with rate grinders and producers that think what we do is inexpensive?

Hey there, Happy New Year! I'm into researching some boundary mics in order to extend my possibilities on set. I've checked the price and specifications of Crown's PZM 30-D, Audio Technica U841A, Sennheiser E912, AKG C542BL, AKG C547BL and Sanken CUB-01. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to have them in my hands and listen to them, so i'm taking my decision based on their specs and of course on your valuable opinions. According to your experience which should I buy? I'm thinking of purchasing a cardioid or hyper and one with a more wide pattern. Best regards, Marco

Many of us do a lot of travel on airplanes and we now have another set of new regulations to make flying an even more unbearable event. Here are the new directives from the TSA on new "In Flight" rules: IN FLIGHT 1. During flight, the aircraft operator must ensure that the following procedures are followed: 1. Passengers must remain in seats beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. 2. Passenger access to carry-on baggage is prohibited beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination. 3. Disable aircraft-integrated passenger communications systems and services (phone, internet access services, live television programming, global positioning systems) prior…

I am posting a link to a clip from "Almost Famous" which demonstrates how good a scene can play even when shot entirely to a pre-recorded playback track. The way we did all the concert scenes in that movie produced the best concert scenes I have ever been a part of. There was discussion early on that the concert scenes would have to be done live or they just would not feel right. Clearer heads prevailed and for all the right reasons we did all the concert scenes to playback. Billy Cruddup was not really a guitar player, and in fact the only real experienced musicians in Stillwater were the drummer and the bass player. Jason Lee is not really singer but is completely belie…

I'm starting a web based drama series in the new year and I've just had an email from the producer. To save time and money, they now want so get single system sound (hard wire or a wireless hop to camera). I've never worked on a purely web-based show before, so I don't know how important stereo atmos is on a shoot like this. Is it best to approach this the same way I would do any other drama production, or can I scale down my kit and workload because of the production style? I'll be a one man sound department. We'll be working on an EX1, so should I just concentrate on dialogue for both of the available channels and forget about atmos or commit one channel for dialogue an…

I'm re-posting a topic I started on the Lectrosonics User Group. I'd like to see how other Venue users feel about my request? Bruce, I have had discussions with several Venue users and we all find that when we are operating strictly off our sound cart battery, the Venue Receivers draw a lot of current. I've always wished that I could power off individual receiver modules that I am not using, to minimize the current draw on my sound cart battery. Like I used to do with the older 411 racks. I have two Venues and currently 8 receiver modules, but sometimes I only have a couple or at the most four modules operating at one time, yet all 8 receivers are drawing…

Hi All, A DOP friend of mine received enquiries to shoot and recommend a sound recordist for a filming schedule for a French artist Kader Attia from 15th Dec to 20th Dec 2009. Since we work a lot together my friend recommended my name. My friend went and met this guy on the 9th of Dec. and was assured that the dates were confirmed. On the 14th of Dec, I did not receive any communication till 10.30 in the night. So I texted the production person; and after 11pm I get this message which says that ’tomorrow we are only filming general views so don’t need you and you will be informed when you are required’. The next day my DOP friend told Kader Attia ‘Th…
