All the numbers on our membership are there in the files! Someone inside needs to run a report detailing exactly how many members would be affected if the 400 hour rule was in effect this qualifying period. Are we talking a handful of people, or are we talking hundreds and hundreds? The union leadership already knows what the expected attrition rate would be. Why can't we get access to that information? If it's a small amount, then no worries, we work harder (only said for emphasis). But, if it is a large amount, over 10% - 15% or higher, then this information is being kept from us for a reason. It would be devastating! Our leadership works for us, so why…

Hey Matthias--I'm post-mixing a film you recorded in Germany a few years ago: Meaghan Kimball's "BLAU JEANS". Interesting film. Man--they didn't cut you any slack on the locations though, did they? Yikes! Philip Perkins

I just saw MILK at a cinema here today. It was quite an incredible film. Savides' work in matching and creating the ambiences of the 70's has been closely intertwined with actual footage from the time. I saw the end credits mentioned two sound mixers, actually one of them as sound mixer and boom. Presumably he was going around working documentary style while the other sound mixer was doing the traditional feature style... The sound mixers' work was exemplary. I had to sometimes "crane my neck" to hear a character over the other in some situations where there was a lot of activity, but then, it was most realistic to the fact that it actually made me feel like i…

I'm about to start a pilot for Warners and noticed that they're using the Panvision Genesis. This is from a DP and producer that love traditional film. When I asked why they're going this route the DP said that ALL pilots were going this way now because it will now be under the AFTRA contract, ie: screw SAG and their baggage, I'm getting a new girlfriend.

To reopen discussion about the Sound Devices CL 8, I'd love some input from anyone who is using it as a primary mix panel with their 788T. I need something until I can replace my tired old mixer. Thanks, Bruce

Hi, my name is Nejc Poberaj I am a new member here. I have a question for all you pros. I have been doing full time freelance sound work for about two years now, and its been mostly ENG, Reality, Documentary type work. I am hoping to some day be able to work on commercials, union shows, movies. And I was curious how and if any of you have made the transition from TV to Film? Also can anyone explain to me how the Y-7a, Y-16 Ect... works? Or at least point me in a direction where all that union stuff is explained? I also dont mind starting from the beginning as a trainee so if anyone knows how to become one of those please share. Thanks.

I love how solid an RF indication the digital channels show up on the lectros. There is no low level bleed into neighboring channels, like I noticed on analog stations. I can place frequencies right up to the last frequency, if I wanted to. It all makes sense really, and am glad to see it. Just a thought.

I listened today to my first film as a mixer. I remember feeling it was not very good while doing it. New equipment, which in hindsight I obviously wasn't ready to use, mostly inexperienced boom operators (but one great one for 5 days - thank goodness), and really not enough experience myself behind the panel. Listening with headphones to get the true feeling of disaster, it WAS as bad as I remember. I'm wondering if anyone else here has had the misfortune of getting a DVD and listening to a job you did before perhaps you were ready. I am embarrassed by it, but so glad my other films have turned out so much better. And I learn more and more each time, as I expect …

The City's legislative analysts office just finished a report on what each lost show actually costs the local economy - in this case, the tax revenues generated by the production of each episode of an hour-long drama (Ugly Betty). I have the report - but I'm not sure how to post it here. It's a 2mb PDF. -- Eric This is from a press release from L.A. City Councilman Eric Garcetti's office: REPORT SHOWS LOSS OF TELEVISION SERIES PRODUCTION COSTLY TO LOCAL ECONOMY Study conducted by Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation is result of Garcetti’s “Ugly Bettyâ€ motion LOS ANGELES -- In response to a motion authored by Los Angeles City Counc…

It was a real nice night. I sat with Resul Pookutty from India's Slumdog Millionaire and it was a pleasure seeing his face when they announced him as the winner for feature films. He then gave a heartfelt speech addressing the long road the world's largest film making country has gone down getting from ADR to production quality audio. Director's Norman Jewison and Paul Mazursky gave nice little speechs too. Our own Richard Van Dyke and Crew Chamberlain's ears must have been burning when they were mentioned quite favorably for shows they did with Paul.

What are we going to do when every job is declared as "New Media"? The very real concern over the 400 hours requirement has overshadowed some very important provisions of this new contract. Scott Kaye and Alan Disler, both very active in Camera Guild, made the following comments: On Feb 9, 2009, at 8:54 PM, Scott Kaye wrote: <i>"Does this mean that, if ratified, members working out-of-classification on "New Media" productions WOULD have to re-rate, so long as they failed to report their job? If this is correct, it looks like they are trying to legislate the reporting of jobs as a way to avoid having to re-rate. If you don't report the job, then how will …

More good writing from Gary Dunham below. IMPORTANT: voting NO is NOT a vote for a strike --- the powers that are fear mongering and are very scared that the membership will exercise its lawful and responsible right to vote. Ron Kutak has even gone so far as to subvert the constitution and by-laws, declaring that the members votes are only a guideline and the ultimate decision will be made, sort of like the electoral college version of democracy. from Gary Dunham: …"And Ron stated that our votes, once cast, will be 'represented' as a sort of electoral college, instead of treated as a general election, which is what the membership has always been led to believe." I…

I have been interested in this mixer and it is finally out there ... sort of. None of the normal dealers are planning on having one or two out on display for people to play with, so I have been unable to even see one in person yet. I asked the guys at West L.A. Music if they could get PreSonus to do a demo for us movie sound people. I can set up a demo, they will come down from the Bay Area and give us a full demo but I don't want to be the only sound person there. So, I am looking for someone from our group who would also like to see this thing and help out in evaluating whether it is even a product that could be useful in our business. Whoever is interested, I would lik…

Well Congress voted today to put off the Switch over to digital TV until June 12th of this year. So a short reprieve for those looking to squeeze a few more months rental out of their 700 Mhz wireless. It still needs the President's signature, but Obama has said he was in favor of the delay so that should come tomorrow. ----Courtney
