Shout out to the sound team working on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Alot of thought clearly went into the immersive aspects of the dialogue capture, with good boom work and lavs that sound open. Never took me out of the moment. I find myself taken out of immersion alot lately with lav-heavy scenes in other shows, this one has an old-school feel (in all the good ways).

Hi all i met Franck by casualty, in NY when he was recording Dellaventura in 1997. The set was under my hotel ( pioneer hotel at this moment) I introduced myself, he invites me to stay with him, close to the nagra and drop me a Comtek. He was very kind, I was starting my sound mixer career at this moment. Now 25 years later, i would like to get in contact with him to say thanks! and share my 25 years experience. Thanks for the information, PM if you like!!!

I'm preparing for a film with lots of emotional scenes set in the pouring rain, with sometimes characters talking under umbrellas, some other scenes in raincoats, and in some scenes the characters just getting drenched in the rain. One horrible thing in common for these raining scenes is that they're all filled with heavy and emotional dialogues. What's worse is that the protagonist is an amateurish kid, which means that ADR is the very last resort and will be almost impossible to get it right. I won't risk my Cmit-5U for the humidity, so I'm thinking of using 416 or CS-3e as my boom mic in a Rycote windshield and Remote Audio rain cover. However, the rain drops will…

I have two different systems for recording audio which are both run into the 3.5mm jack on my GH5 camera and I’m looking to get more recording systems. Before pouring a ton of money into additional expensive system systems, I want to make sure it makes the most sense for my application. I will be recording natural sounds in the environment and I’m not using an audio recorder for the extra cost/complexity of syncing thousands of clips. What’s the best way to compare these microphones/systems? I’m guessing rather than playing various frequency sounds which could depend on my speaker quality, I should I just put them both in the field and record what I'll a…

Hey everybody! I am currently planning to move to Los Angeles in the coming years with my American wife (currently living in Europe). I've worked as a boom-operator for eight years and would love to continue working in the US. I read that I need 100 days of non-union work before I can join the Local 695. Does anyone have any experience with coming from abroad and joining the Union? Any chance to count my years of experience from abroad? Any and all advice is appreciated!

I'm looking for suggestions about how to handle multiple, (3) actors in full body robot like costumes. They need to have full duplex coms with each other and the director. The production said do you have comteks for the actors. Yes, but do you understand that the actors own dialogue need to be iso'd (is that a word) from their comtek feed otherwise it will feed back to them and cause a distracting echo that will likely be too much for their own intelligibility. Another problem is the 2 way coms I'm familiar with like the HME systems that the camera departments use; have a large headset and boom mics which probably wouldn't work in a full body enclosed costume. Any other…

Does anyone use a third party when purchasing used stuff that is in the $1000's? I am about to purchase some gear that seems completely legit but it's not chump change. Wanted to know if there was some way to make sure that I don't get screwed by sending money for something that never comes. He is too far away for me to drive.

Other than here, I have only a few other forums I frequent. One is TDPRI which is all about guitars and amps and tech stuff. And lots of old men with opinions haha! Kind of toxic for some folks but I ignore the dummies and occasionally come upon insanely awesome threads. So here is one and I want to share it here. Most of you know this stuff, but I didn't. I was always curious about how many volts a line level vs. mic was! Here is the link to the thread. I contacted the OP and was granted permission to repost this here. https://www.tdpri.com/threads/db-vu-meters-line-levels-24-bits-what-does-it-all-mean-do-i-need-to-care.1096420/ …

I've been fortunate enough to have a couple gigs that have taken me deep into the wilderness. And I've been frustrated that I'm inevitably tethered to a film crew, which makes wildlife recording a hit or miss proposition ... I'm tethered to the priorities of camera. So, I would love to set up a recording trip on my own ... take a guide into the bush for a couple weeks and see what I can get in terms of wildlife recordings. I would love to talk with someone who has recorded wildlife professionally and see what my options are for making this pay for itself. I'm imagining libraries as a possible source, but I also imagine there aren't many libraries that need …

(Re-posted from Facebook, so you might've already seen this on the Post Sound Mixers group. But these are my words. Thanks for reading.) ----------------------- I've been following Brian's story for a while now. He's one of us, a post sound mixer, who fell on extremely hard times when childhood traumas reappeared in his life as PTSD. The guy had to sell all his equipment years ago and is now running on government programs and donations until he can get the funds, treatment, and business momentum to get back on his feet. https://www.gofundme.com/f/brianparsons?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sh…

Does anyone here have insight into operating wireless systems in close proximity to high power transmitters? Or any fanatical RF gurus willing to chime in about the potential risks? I am a staff audio engineer at a university, and I have become the de-facto RF coordinator. I keep track of over 100 UHF wireless systems spread across our 225 acre campus. I have been asked about the impact of potential telecommunication equipment installation (e.g. cellular antennas) on buildings. The information I have does not specify frequencies or technologies, so I have to assume "telecommunications equipment" could include traditional cellular 1GHz and up, 600-700MHz ba…

I just got a new MacBook and am saddened that Wave Agent no longer works (Monterey OS). I used it daily to make .pdf sound reports as many of my clients don’t like the .csv files my recorder creates. Does anyone have an alternative application to edit metadata and create a clean looking sound report?

Hey Guys, So I've been self employed for about 4 years now, living in the countryside, and I've built up a real nice bunch of contacts. Problem is that for various reasons I'd like to move to a city, potentially in a different country... either-way, quite a long way from where I am now. I'm thinking of taking on some projects back here sometimes, but realistically I suspect it won't take long for the network I've built up to fall apart. So I'd need to build a new network of people fast! I just wondering if any of you had experience with moving long distances as either a sound recordist, post-production soundie, or music composer? Would …

Hi all I am reading Jay's book "Producing Great Sound for Film and Video", and would like to listen audio example files, but the companion site doesn't work anymore (http://www.greatsound.info). Does anyone previously downloaded all the audio files and pdf from the companion site and could share them to me ?

I need opinions on a potential Timecard Buddy feature and it applies to anyone who fills out a timecard or has someone else fill out a timecard for them Originally I kept Timecard Buddy's data restricted to the device. I later added a limited cloud element: if your device is signed into your Apple or Google ID, data will be synced across your devices. The reason I kept it restricted is to limit the potential of leaking user data, particularly when a coworker is entrusting it to someone else filling out timecards. Most of the data isn't particularly harmful (though privacy should be respected): work times, pay rates, rentals. But the data does sometimes include…

Hey All, I’ve been wondering about the bread pans I’ve been seeing around A2’s stations and wanted to delve deeper into the concept similar to the XLR origins. So far I’ve talked to a few A2’s and gotten mixed explanations. I did some quick searching and found out that there is a definite beginning and I think now and end. Read for yourself, if interested of course! 😉 Here is the link. RFVenue Blog “This phenomenon is often limited to big shows, because the baking pan technique came from the big leagues—from the man many call the father of professional frequency coordination of low power devices for entertainment production,…

Curious to know what other sound mixers are using when it comes to carrying accessories on you when on your feet and small recorder bags. Talking with other production people about break-ins and backpacks being stolen etc lately freaks me out about backpacks. I personally had experienced a huge loss a few years ago where our van was broken into and they climbed over the most expensive stuff in cases to go for all the soft bags n backpacks. I realize there’s no way to be 100% theft proof but I have since then started putting any soft bags inside pelican cases and looping theft deterrent cabling through the handles etc. but there’s something very specific about a backpack t…

Has anyone tried a few yards of thick fake fur on cardboard instead of furniture blankets for a highly reverberant acoustic space? Half Yard Shaggy Faux Fur Fabric Synthetic Plush Craft Patch Sewing Fur Cuts FabricLA-Shaggy-Faux-Fake-Fabric Long Pile Shaggy Faux Fur Squares Fabric Fuzzy Material Cuts Patches Craft DIY Supply Costume Decoration Even when having to put up a 2 wall space for a quick voiceover. Not just walls but say in a bathroom has anyone tried scraps of this fake fur on the floor? Did it help anymore than say a furniture packing blanket on the ground or clamped to the top of the shower curtain loop?
