RF Info and the FCC Licensing Project Mission Statement In order to ensure that the concerns, needs and issues of the thousands of professional sound recordists in the United States who use the UHF spectrum on a daily basis, can be heard by the FCC, it is imperative that as many users as possible obtain a license from the FCC. The basic goals of this project are: To educate Production Sound individuals who use radio equipment in the lawful use of these devices, and to understand the privileges and responsibilities of licensed operation. To remove the liability of unlicensed operation of wireless transmitters. The FCC can levy fines of up to $11,000, per trans…

This is one area where I still find myself taking a bit of a regular kicking on occasions, you know the one, Takes 1 to 6 ok for sound, but still no good for camera or actors or DP, Take 7, excellent all round apart from the wind damage that killed the take for you. Over the last 20 years I have tried many methods of protecting lav mics from wind, Its always a trade off between size and protection, so the purpose of this post is to promote the sharing of our ideas to achieve the best use wind cover on lavs. Regards Brian

Hi my fellow soundies. I'm sitting with a problem I can't seem to wrap my head around.Hoping someone can help me please!! If I send tone to camera at mic level from my Sound Devices mix pre,I get this constant rythmic pulse on just the one channel. The - 20 light keeps flashing and you can also hear it.I've swopped the 2 transmitters, but same thing. If I use line level it seems to be fine. When I've tested it on my Sony PO1,everything seems to be fine, mic and line level. Also when I run a cable to camera from my mix pre,its fine.So I can't figure out if it's the cable,my mixer,my transmitter.Any suggestions please or have anyone else experienced something similar to this?…

No Political responses, please, as this is a dispassionate lead to a topic that occurred to Fury, when this emailed link was stumbled on... http://itmakessenseb...-during-debate/ Is it possible to so deftly conceal a speaker, in or near the; conchal bowl, antihelix, or even the tragus (slightly increasing the tragus' size), such that talent can simply hear and parrot their lines, perhaps 0.5 sec. or whatever, after hearing the feed, whilst avoiding intentional recording of the live performance? The director could, therefore, essentially time cue the lines. Running lines would be minimized. Of course, the talent's interpretation and ego would necessitate consi…

Anybody here involved with this new show??? http://www.nbc.com/stars-earn-stripes/ After wearing a SD744, a SD442 and (3) 411a TXs on my chest during a reality sizzle shoot last week, the thought of some of you peeps carrying even more on your shriekingly taut vertebral discs made me shiver. So I'm curious about what the workflow was on this show. My good lady doctor has some concerns about this latest hybrid-mutation of militarized entertainment, but I told her that there are worse things than losing a few G-List "celebrities" to friendly fire. Best, Steven

My story made the front page of Buzzfeed about an hour ago, just below the Disney Princesses. Their reporter summarized it nicely for non-engineers and added some expert confirmation. I am now officially an "audio geek" and preparing to enjoy fifteen minutes of fame. But, alas, Buzzfeed said it was against policy to include my CAS credential... This link goes directly to their article.

I need a lightweight program/app for OSX and PC that will play our .wav files with stamped timecode. Apparently quicktime pro shows timecode, but only for videos. Any one know of a piece of software to play TC encoded .WAVs? FCP does but that software is not easy to come by for free. I need it simply for reporter/producer types who want to listen to track and create simple EDL from audio file.

Hello, Does anyone know of Mac software that converts .WAV files to MP3 with time code? I'm looking to end up with MP3 files that have code like the ones you can record directly on a Sound Devices recorder.

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18927928 Interesting to see how the developers call this unique. Isn't it how we've been using the Lectro remotes all this while?

Probably not possible (or even something many would think useful, especially if they are using digital radio mics :-) but I thought i'd put this out there: It occurred to me while playing around with my 633 that being able to also dial in 'negative' delay on a boom mic channel (for example) would be easier than dialling the the equivalent (normal) delay on all the radios channels when working with all analogue booms and radio mics for example. Obviously it's not possible to push the sound of the boom through the recorder before it arrives so I mean this in a virtual way. d r

Can anyone make sense of the 'new' Sennheiser frequency finder. From what I see, it now only states regulatory info. I usually use an RF Explorer on site, but like to see TV channel/frequency signal strengths in a given area prior to arrival. The discontinued online finder was quick and easy. The Shure Frequency Finder shows TV channels/frequencies for a given location, but not the dB modulation, distance and other pertinent factors..

Just an article from the BBC website I thought I would share. Interesting. The technique exploits what is called the "orbital angular momentum" of the waves - imparting them with a "twist". Varying this twist permits many data streams to fit in the frequency spread currently used for just one. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17221490 Hooray for innovators!

Is "23.98" just another way to say "23.97"? Are they the same thing?

Hi all. Day after tomorrow, I'll be chasing a young 'soldier in training' with his 'group' around on his first simulated 'combat experience' - lots of screaming, loud gunshots, running through brambles and creeks, etc. I've never been in anything nearing combat, and I've certainly never tried to record it before. We're shooting on two 5D's to keep it light, and I'll be packing an SD 552 (recording to sd card - no audio to cams), one or two wirelesses (one for soldier, and perhaps one for instructor), and a boom. I'm told the shooter barely ever uses a slate - does it all with pluraleyes, and the 2nd cam is a producer, who's just hoping to grab b roll when pos…
