Need Sound Mixer and Boom, PAY. 5/22 (Chatsworth) Date: 2010-05-14, 4:04PM PDT Reply to: gigs-mpgfg-1741376625@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] Looking for a 2 person sound team, mixer and boom. It's a one day shoot in an amazing house in chatsworth for a cooking show pilot. You must own your top notch equipment, be respectful to the location and obviously have chops in your work. The pay is $300 flat, both for you and your boom op (i'll leave it to you to figure out the money distribution). Probably a 10 hour shoot, daytime only. I can't stress enough how important the sound is on this production, this is a legit pilot with network interest tha…

It's been a while since I had to place lav mics in the heinously noisey professional uniform. Last time, it was B6 through the buttonhole with less-than-stellar results. This time, there will be mostly uniforms and I want to use the DPA's I've come to favor. Their "snoot" through the buttonhole seems to be a likely answer, but I'm thinking that it might be better to go through a hole made through a pocket or behind an insignia/medal and leave the mic more exposed than hidden. Let's talk military / police / EMT uniform mic hiding techniques, shall we?

I couldn't find the original thread on the You Tube viral video called "Stand By Me", which featured street performers from around the world doing the song. Mix Magazine has an excellent interview with the producer/engineer/director of the video, Mark Johnson. http://mixonline.com/post/features/audio_playing_change/index.html Here is the link to the original You Tube video, now over 12.6 million views! The Making of Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love' Great article, in depth, about the Led Zeppelin recordings. I had always wondered about the pre-echo in Whole Lotta Love and I think I knew it was an accident, but I thought it was PRINT THROUGH which can, of course, produce a pre-echo. Below you can read an excerpt that explains what it was "At the point where the song breaks and Robert slowly wails, "Way down inside…wo-man…you need…love," Jimmy and I heard this faint voice singing the lyric before Robert did on the master vocal track. Apparently Robert had done two different vocals, recording them on two different tracks. Even when I turned the volume down all…

I'm re-watching the mentalist. Great show.. miss it.. Just noticed Daniel P. Church, perhaps in the background? Purposely in the shot? Funny. -Richard

Working on a show now with a camera crew that is distinctly arrogant and has shown a contempt toward both sound and scripty. Extremely sloppy slating, not informing everyone in the chain when a lens change occurs then when you ask the blow you off. In particular, the 1'st AC on the shoot stands out. The DP and I have arrived at a good place, but the rest of his 1'st crew have been difficult. Issue has been brought up with 1'st ad and Line producer, gets better for a scene or two then they revert to status quo. Curious what your worst experiences have been? Oh yea, to boot, the director comes from background where all his films are mostly looped so he has no problems with…

I discovered this website today: http://savethesounds.info/ ABOUT THE SITE: The Museum Of Endangered Sounds is owned and operated by Brendan Chilcutt (handle: kidpeleus99@aol.com). He launched the site in January of 2012 as a way to preserve the sounds made famous by favorite old technologies and electronics equipment. For instance, the textured rattle and hum of a VHS tape being sucked into the womb of a 1983 JVC HR-7100 VCR. As you probably know, it's a wonderfully complex sound, subtle yet unfiltered. But, as streaming playback becomes more common in the US, and as people in developing nations like Canada and the UK get brought up to DVD players, it's …

this will replace 'Blair Witch' in the mythology of low budget movie wonders: " Paramount may produce 'Paranormal Activity' sequel... Can lightning strike twice? ... Paramount Pictures is hoping so, as the studio is actively considering producing a sequel to "Paranormal Activity," the out-of-the-blue horror flick that cost $15,000 to produce and has sold $62.5 million worth of tickets so far domestically. " did we all miss this terrific opportunity on CL when we could have applied to do the sound for free?? so, who did do the sound?? --or was the sound done by the "Producer/Director/Writer/DP/Editor" ?? and now that the $$ are coming in, will there be more $$ …

So, some things have gotten better, some things still need to be sorted out... I think that is the case with all updates (quiet, Eric, please). As promised, the whole View New Content tracking has really changed and offers a whole host of user selections (although it takes the additional step of going to the New Content page where you can make your choices --- as pictured below). I am still going to work on routines that provide the sort of simplicity we had on the OLD old site, but don't hold your breath.

While in Chicago last Thursday, my A2 and I noticed a club next door to our hotel that we felt entitled to be privy to. However, when trying to gain entrance, we were barred and told that without the special super secret password from Glenn, we would not be allowed entry. As both my assistant and I are proud Nomad owners, it was with great disappointment that we were turned away. Glenn has assured me that this outrage will not happen again.

A friend of mine called me. He had done a number of promos for Oprah's new network that is getting ready to launch. He had been charging them $500/10 + $250 for gear (boom, slate, record) for a 5D shoot. Usually a talking head saying a line or two. Sometimes the shoots were less than a couple of hours, so for that he offered a $100 discount on his labor. This was obviously a VERY good deal for production. He was not available today, so referred me. They contacted him this morning for 2 or 3 hour shoot this afternoon. He told me what he had been charging. They called me and wanted a 1/2 day rate of $250 + $125. I told them I would offer a discount of $100 f…

One of my pet peeves about episodic television production is THEIR policy of Pro-Rating Sound Equipment packages based on a partial work week. For example paying 4/5 of a package rate because of a holiday week. When and how did this pratice become "grandfathered" as SOP? My argument to counter this is that the Camera, Lighting and Grip packages are WEEKLY rentals with no discounts for unused days. If the equipment is in the hands (i.e on the camera truck) of the Production, then they should pay for a full weeks rental wether the package was 'working' or not. I'd like to know how other mixers have dealt with this situation and how you have managed to overcome this …

Has anyone started using the AO-Flex Porta Brace Series? Been researching for a possible new bag for my equipment.. I am already suspicious on the practicality of having an adjustable ring where my harness will be attached to because I own the old Petrol PEGz-1 which also has this adjustable d-hook system and it didn't really work very well for me. Would like to gather some feedback from field users. Thanks in advance! http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/787090-REG/Porta_Brace_AO_FLEX4_AO_FLEX4_Audio_Organizer_Blue.html

As anybody here had any dealings with the Post Group telecine's organization? I have to have a call with them today, as I try to sort out some ongoing issues they are having with dailies from a production that I worked a few days on (I left due to prior commitments, but left my gear on the production for the mixer to use), but apparently they are having some sync issues with the Deva and picture. I don't know all the details yet. I had a conversation with the mixer yesterday, and I'll need to call them today to find out exactly what sync issues they are having. I do know that from day one we've had issues with this organization and getting the right audio for the dailies.…

Has anybody watched his videos? http://realitysoundschool.com/make-6-figures-in-audio/ Although the info is a bit general in nature (probably gets more specific in the paid videos), and I know from personal experience that I never even came close to making six figures in LA as a full time union boom op and mixer, I think he does a fairly decent job here of covering the basics. Won't be sending him my cash any time soon, but he seems like an OK guy. Anybody know him personally or have any thoughts about his videos?
