I was by Trew Audio today in Nashville and grabbed a picture of the doorstop that was being used from the employee breakroom to the shop. Thought everyone would enjoy this. If you can not tell it is a Fostex PD 2. Cheers, Whit

Yesterday, along with Chris Howland and the LA Sound Mixers, I hosted a seminar called The Unscripted Sound. In it, we discussed what goes into recording audio for reality tv shows, and the differences between scripted and unscripted mixing. You can watch the recording of it here (even without a facebook account): https://www.facebook.com/LASoundMixers/videos/886368908570884/ And of course, you all know I love talking all things audio. If anyone has any questions, or want to talk one on one, please reach out and we can discuss it further! Thanks!

" in the biggest pro camera store in xxx the other day and one of the guys told me they have never sold so much “audioâ€ gear as they do now with the DSLR fad. Azden, Audio Technica, Zoom, cheap Sennheiser etc. All low end stuff being sold to the new do it yourself crowd of DSLR “artistsâ€ who think that prosumer audio and Plural Eyes makes more sense than hiring a sound person. " yeah, I know we have frequently discussed this, but the quote puts several recent and current topics together in a succinct nutshell. The operative thought process is: if the wunder-cam costs so little for such "great" pictures and even records sound, then I don't need much m…

As you know the Motion Picture Academy decided to have 10 nominees in the "Best Picture" category. The nominating process is a "preferential ballot". This means you write-in your ten best picks in the order of 1 - 10. All the other categories have the traditional five nominations. This preferential system has worked beautifully for the Oscars during the last 82 years. The final ballot is structured where you vote only for the one choice you believe deserves the Oscar in that category. HOWEVER, this year, in the Best Picture category they have instituted a second preferential vote -- which to me is really strange. I guess they were worried that by doubling the choices t…

Saw this watching the morning news and really enjoyed the way they presented the story. Iconic, and you will recognize it even if you had no idea. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/an-iconic-hollywood-sound-effect-called-the-wilhelm-scream-was-uncovered-in-an-archive/

Last night's NBC live musical seems to have avoided the horrible room noise that plagued "Sound of Music" and "Peter Pan"... 1) by presenting it as a proscenium show on a single stage, rather than from a giant multi-stage set. I'm sure they did this for other reasons (including budget and camera management) but it did focus the actors' voices in a single place and presumably a smaller room... or in room large enough that they could get away from the worst HVAC. 2) by mixing canned bg into the surrounds, almost constantly. Room noise could hide behind that and be easier to forgive. 3) fwiw, there also seems to be a lot less intimate dialog i…

Hello, Here's is something I would like to share with you all. Sometimes when one is recording a sound-take for a feature, drama etc, there is a soundbite in the track that is a worth mentioning in the soundreport. Church bells, door slam, whatever. It even doesn't have to be for the current production, just a nice sound in general. Nowadays we use the metadata in the sound files to make a remark of this. The postproduction sound studio can easily search for keywords in the metadata corresponding with these sound files. Is it an idea to have of a keyword, that's not a common word, but a word we can use in the metadata for soundbites like this. For…

This is in reply to statements made in another thread Even though I consider myself very much an insider with regards to most of this technology, I think I am an outsider with a minority opinion on the subject of nomenclature. Firstly, I maintain that there is nothing wrong with continuing the use of the term "sound roll" and the use of the term "track", no matter how we are actually accomplishing our recordings. If we just through out the use of the word "track" it would make it very difficult to understand and talk about the differences in file formats, like monophonic files and polyphonic files, without recognizing that it is just a new way of recording tra…

So, apparently every 17 years cicadas come out of the ground, hell bent on ruining your production track. If you live on the east coast, these little suckers will start appearing once the ground temp hits about 64 degrees, and they will be out literally in the billions all up and down the eastern coast. Supposedly they only live for 4 to 6 weeks, but that's plenty long to ruin some productions. Just a heads up in case you go on location scouts. this wants to ruin your takes

I'm looking for suggestions for theaters in metro Atlanta that have decent sound. My son and I both went to see Les Misérables and agree that we don't know what the problem was but it sounded like a great production track mix. When we go again I want to hear the movie.

Hello, I have recently come across several projects that had a theatre play in it (big theatre, sound reinforcement is assumed). Just wanted to know from those of you who have live theatre sound experiance, and whoever else wishes to share what the most common default hardwire microphone setup was. I've seen all sorts of things long and short shotguns from above, from below (just off the front of the stage), PZM's (bad idea), etc. thanx, Bartek

I recently got to thinking on my days working in theatre and how smoothly a show would usually run. I started to contrast this in my head with how most shoots I'm on run and it made me sad. Typical theatre cue: SM: Stand by cue 13 Board op: Cue 13 standing by SM: Cue 13, GO Two way communication between the Stage Manager and Ops and it usually goes pretty well...at least all the shows I worked flowed just fine. Typical video take: AD: Roll sound, roll cameras. Mixer: Sound speeds. Camera op & DP: crickets... AD: Are cameras rolling? DP: No we're not ready, we need to get focus marks. AD: I thought you just got those. DP: We did…

Then best way to Hop? I have 2-Lectro SRa's and 2-411's block 21 in the bag. I know turning on 2 400 transmitters in the same block is problematic so I'm gonna redo. I have block 26 IFB's that I typically don't use in the bag, but I don't want to fight them when I'm in cart mode. Client listening in bag mode is Comtek 216. I'm in Dallas where block 21 is fairly open. I'd like to hang the transmitter(s) on the bag and not have to run them up my harness or back. Prefer Lectro with an SRa that I can drop in a Panasonic camera, but would be open to doing Zax for hops only. Generally the Zax method is to expensive and more than I want for hops, but I'm op…

So tomorrow I start an new show at NBC/Universal/Comcast whatever. During the discussion about deliverables, it was agreed that we would shuttle CF cards back and forth. But they said they always get a DVD-RAM backup to send over to post sound. I asked if we could not do DVD-RAMs. They said, "How does post sound usually get the ISOs on your show?" I told them editorial just gave them the files. "Oh - we can do that." So no DVD-RAMs!! Everyone was happy about not wasting hundreds of DVDs. See, just because they have always done it one way, and ask you to do it that way too, they can be educated and convinced otherwise. Robert

Just looking for some stories here. I just watched a TV episode I mixed earlier this year. There was one very soft and conversational scene between two actresses sitting a little under 2 ft apart on a park bench. The location was so loud with downtown Los Angeles 6th street traffic at rush hour. We never actually saw the traffic, of course. There were a number of times that the actors didn't even hear each other for their cues, because the scene had them looking forward mostly, and not at each other. We were in a parking lot, dressed as a NYC park, with tall buildings on 3 sides amplifying the street noise. The traffic/bus noise was incredible, not to mention the…

Thought I'd share this with you all... I just received and email from a producer for whom I am doing a one day job on Wednesday. I have done one previous day gig for him. This brief email was to let me know that he had found an extra $50 in his budget to add to my rate. The rate was already a reasonable day rate, and I had not asked for more money. While the $50 didn't represent much of an increase, which he jokingly stated in his email, it represented to me that I was being thought of and appreciated. Robert
