Hello Friends, Just booked a job for next week going to haiti, shooting a doc on some Companies and US politicians and their relief/development work. The EP and DP have been down there 4 of 5 times in the past year shooting parts of the film, though this will be the first time they have used a Sound Mixer--due to the high profile of the politicians involved in this particular shoot, they can't afford to have any audio-atrocities this time around. When I inquired to the producer about adding my kit to their Carnet, he seemed confused, and after I explained what a Carnet was, he said that thus far they have traveled without one. This sounded very fishy to me, so…

This is a question mostly for forum members from European countries. I'll be coming to New York in the beginning of December for a film shoot and I'll bring my own equipment. I've travelled across the world with equipment and a few times via USA to another country but I've never worked there. Usually before departing my home country we go to the customs office at the airport and show them our equipment and a printed list including every piece of equipment, their serial numbers, value and country they were manufactured in. The customs officers then stamp our list and off we go. I've never had any problems whatsoever. Actualluy, while travelling in Europe …

Has anyone ever treated a 2 camera Betacam shoot as a multitrack situation? Scenario: Good morning America Interview, small room, tons of lighting, no room for booms. 2 guest side by side on one cam, 2 hosts side by side on other cam. Each person miked with a lav. 2 audio tracks availiable on each camera. Time code transcription required. Cameras locked with TC. In this situation, it is typical to mix each couple to one channel on the camera having redundant audio on both cameras, making it as easy as possible for post to edit. MY thought was to use direct outs on my 442 where each person would get thier own track on each camera, while still using the f…

I thought this funny.. http://losangeles.cr...2532355345.html but just in case it's flagged.. here's a backup copy. http://good4sound.co...2532355345.html I've had a few bad boom ops, several I came close to firing, but I always paid them. I know there's 2 sides to every story... -Richard

I did the Tough Mudder in NJ this past October. I have not participated in sports/ competitions in over 20 years and truly enjoyed myself and the changes in lifestyle with diet and workouts. This year I plan on a few triathlons(sprint and Olympic distance). I'm checking to see if any others on this site are involved in the sport.

Triple-Slur Score Words dropped from recent editions of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary By David Bukszpan From a list, culled by David Bukszpan, of words excluded from the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary’s third and fourth editions, published by Merriam-Webster in 1996 and 2005. In 1993, a player objected to the dictionary’s inclusion of “JEW v -ED, -ING, -S to bargain with — an offensive term,” sparking a letter-writing campaign by the National Council of Jewish Women and the Anti-Defamation League. In 1994, Hasbro agreed to remove offensive terms from ensuing editions of the OSPD. When players responded in outrage at the expurgation, Hasbro create…

This may not mean anything but I have a bet going with a grip friend of mine. The other night at wrap I ended up on the grip truck(again) and we got talking about film terms. I believe that in the states you guys call the last shot of the day the martini. We in Canada call it the window shot. I am told this comes from our British heritage where at the end of the day you went to the pay "window" to get your daily pay. Maybe some British recorders could verify this. The second last shot of the day is the Abby so named after the second AD Abby Singer who apparently continually called the second last shot the martini or window. Anyway to my point. MOS. Does this really…

A real eye opener. He also did a series following the Equator which was also brilliant. I haven't seen every episode but what I've seen, I've loved. Haven't see any of Tropic of Capricorn but looking forward to it. Will have to wait for re-runs!! We see everything late here in Australia so some of you have probably seen and know about this, sorry. No sign of who the soundie is on the closing credits? I recommend watching thes…

So we are doing some equipment check and we ran into a problem. I connect the 702T and the HPX500 with the Lemo to BCN timecode cable. But the only way we are able to get them to sync is to put the 702T in 25FPS. The camera is set in NTSC 1080i 24FPS. Has anyone run into this problem or know of a way to fix this? They seem like they are in sync but we dont trust them.

Not to spoil anything for those that haven't seen it - but I just watched the 4th episode of True Detective, and I wanted to say that in addition to the gripping tension of the final scene, it was also technically fantastic. IMDB tells me that Jeffrey Humphries was the Boom Op, but doesn't say who the mixer or other on-set crew were. Christopher McGuire was the steadicam operator as well. As a youngster it's incredibly inspiring in addition to the drama I mentioned. Regardless, if any of you come across this post, I just wanted to say congratulations on a fantastic scene, possibly my favourite one in years.

Saw this movie last night for date night. I really liked the meticulous and highly intentional camera work and cuts. I found the wide and closeups, mostly in the prison meeting room scenes with Franco, had obvious wire / boom transitions that didn't closely match. I think that it would have been beneficial to do a little bit more ADR on this film. The courtroom scene, with the Schoeps mics used as props, was super distracting as I couldn't keep my eyes off the beautiful mics! I firmly believe that they must have been used as practical props, that part sounded really good.

OK, I just have to get this one off my chest. I'm working on a TV drama episodical, have been on that show now and again for two years roughly. I would say I know what I'm doing. So the current editor (never worked with her before, but she has years of experience) comes up to me as I sit one day after wrap with DOP and director (rare occasion but it's a great crew) and tells me (while everybody else is listening) that my tracks distort. I say, well, I listen to what I record, that's my job, and I'm pretty positive they don't distort, so you should check their monitors etc. Instead of trusting my words, she causes a stir, asking the assistant editor to export some tracks a…

Wanted to pick up the new TRX LT2. Just wondering if anyone has compared it to the also new TRX LA2 I understand the battery life will be half due to one lithium. But i'd like to know considering it has a 50mw output limit. How does this effect range?, it's the new version 2, so is that range loss not much? My hope was that the range would still far out perform the old TRX 900 LA2NC Any info would be appreciated.

I did a job Friday, Saturday and sunday of last week. We agreed to 700/12 Saturday and sunday and a half day (350) friday to setup mics in the car to make sure we are ready to roll at 6 am. So saturday we went 13 hours (1 hour of OT). No problem. Sunday we were 7 am call, wrapped at 3pm and then we reset gear and downloaded my card till 5. The producer asked that since we didn't do a full 12 hours on Sunday that we cut the half day and to not charge OT. I also took some tracks that needed clean up into izotope rx7 and removed some noise and reverb at no charge.... They were great to work with and I really want to work wit…

I'm a camera operator who is building a small sound package for personal projects and I'm trying to find a belt worn adapter that would feed headphones and xlr out to the mixer for a two man crew. I've always seen a small box on the boom operator's waist that headphones would be fed from and the boom's xlr out would feed to . I'm searching all the pro sound rental purchase sites and for the life of me I can't locate such an item. What the heck is it called? ( it just occurred to me some boom operators probably just have on a set of comteks...but I'm learning here) Thanks Brian Culver City California

I've been working as a boom operator in Los Angeles for the past four and a half years or so, and I still don't have my union card. This is beginning to frustrate me. A big part of the problem is productions that do payroll in-house, and then don't sent roster letters to Contract Services when I ask them to. I've boomed three features this year, and I don't have roster letters for *any* of them. That, plus the Black Hole That Was 2009, means I'm actually starting to *lose* days. I also do quite a bit of mixing. I'm generally closer to the producers on those projects, so it might be easier to get my days that way. The problem, though, is that I don't really feel like…

-from PowerPage article TSA Employee Unaware of MacBook Air, Causes Traveler to Miss Flight I have a theory about the TSA: these are the same people who would have been pumping gas 15 years ago. According to Engadget, a Transportation Security Administration employee apparently held up a traveler after removing it from the scanner, pulled it aside and began to ask the owner questions about the unit. The TSA employee, flabbergasted by the "lack of a drive" and the complete absence of "ports on the back", was then aided by co-workers who swarmed to investigate. The MacBook Air's owner missed the flight, which took off on schedule, but was eventually allowed to p…

This might be a weird question.. How does one, "turn a show"? For example, I might be signing on to work on a horribly low paying TV show pilot.. And lets say someone on the sound crew (cough, cough) drops the dime to the union about "going union". How does one do this process? Doesn't the production get pissed, you loose your job if they find out (not a huge deal really), the company closes up shop, moves on under a different title, etc?? I've never seen this discussed here as far as I know.. Yet, many people say this is encouraged and preferred way to go union. Thanks -Richard

So to start off, I'm helping a friend with a short film and I've hit a brick wall. Here's what's going on. In this film, there is a scene where this couple are watching a movie on the couch and to avoid any legal problems, the director just had another one of his films on the tv. So first off, the audio on his previous project isn't great; and the main issue is that the little tidbits of the movie that you actually see, the characters are clearly yelling. I've asked them if they could recut this scene to show less of the shots where they are yelling but of course they didn't have much else to work with. I've tried muffling the video and making it quieter so it's not …

Hi all, I will recently start working on a TV series wich will be filmed at 4k 50fps. The question is, how could I send or receive time code at that frame rate in order to have all synced for the edit? The sound recorders I know can handle up to 30 fps TC if I'm not wrong... I would apreciate any kind of help in this matter. Regards
