The first audio recordings on Mars reveal a quiet planet with occasional gusts of wind where two different speeds of sound would have a strange delayed effect on hearing, scientists said Friday. https://phys.org/news/2022-04-audio-mars-reveals.html

I think it might be beneficial to have a DIY category to post in. To me, its separate than Equipment and Tech Reference but applies to both. Some past threads that come to mind are the helical antenna construction, power distribution, cart fabrication and cable making/ soldering. It would be easier to search topics for what one is looking to do, in this category, as opposed to filtering through hundreds of threads.

I've used Lectros for years but always had my lavs on separate blocks. Recently I was gifted a set that shares a block with one of my older sets. Tried searching on the forum and found multiple people confirm that this is possible, but haven't found a clear solution to my problem: I have 2x UCR401 receivers on the same block. When I try to use both my transmitters at the same time (1x Lma & 1x UM400a), only one will work. The Pilot symbol starts flashing on the one that cuts out. Set #1: UCR 401 (firmware v2.6, compat 400) LMa Set #2: UCR401 (firmware v2.8, compat NU HYB) UM400a Any ide…

I picked up a few EPK days on a movie real recently here in town and it ended up being some of the most interesting days I have worked in a long while. I got offered these days when the companies normal person in town could not cover the days, in the past 23 years of mixing I have rarely done this work for whatever reason, and the few days that I have done I had always felt like the unwelcome outsider on set. Walking onto set the first day I was off to see the mixer for a program feed and I ran into a boom person that I had used in NYC in the past that was just starting the show as a 3rd, he introduced me to the mixer and after some small talk, provided me with a …

Saw this again last night—it had been years. Very nice work by Jeff and Don. It must have been a surreal experience. Sellers supposedly never broke character on set (except for outtakes, like those tacked on during the credits). Beautiful film.

http://www.niemanlab...re-kill-me-now/ I read this article a few days ago.. and it's been sticking in my head ever since. In short the article brings up some good points. Basically, it states that the current media that we've had, TV shows in particular, are set to a certain constraint in which are completely controlled by big corporations, are set to CRASH. And that basically, LA is in the best place to capture this new opportunity. Despite the fact that I live here, and would actually welcome a total upheaval of the 'system'..I'm not convinced..I think that we're obviously witnessing a big change, but I still see the large corporations still controlling ev…

Saw this watching the morning news and really enjoyed the way they presented the story. Iconic, and you will recognize it even if you had no idea. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/an-iconic-hollywood-sound-effect-called-the-wilhelm-scream-was-uncovered-in-an-archive/

I was not sure to which forum to put this in . I have done some selling and buying from a lot of your here. It always has gone smoothly and pain free. I just finished a purchase from Saxman. What a great guy , was very fair with me , even gave me time to contact the dealer to get any questions or concerns answered about the gear, sent me pictures, talked to me on the phone and answered all my questions. Just want other members to know, he's a very good fellow to deal with. Cheers Tom n Chicago

Hey everyone I am new here... I am looking to purchase a Lectro SRA receiver and 2 UM400a's for a wireless hop to various cameras. I will be working in LA, Vegas and Salt Lake city primarily. I have been told that block 20 is probably the best for LA by the Lectro people. Problem is that the SRA's in blk 20 are backordered for 6-8 weeks and the UM's are a month out. I have a series starting up in the next few weeks soooo... On the other hand I have heard block 21 is looking pretty good as well, and are more readily available. Any thoughts on Block selection and where to buy? I would be open to used stuff as well. Happy Mixing... Heather

I am terrible at gifts, especially when it's just for people just doing their jobs. I feel like it's a brazen bribe and it makes me uncomfortable. I mean, I only get gifts for good friends so this is obviously just to curry favor. Kind of makes me sick. I mostly just thank the drivers, very sincerely. Do you all give gifts? At the start of a show or later? And what kind of gifts? Beer? Liquor? Gift cards? One of our captains is an ace, totally takes care of us, parks us close and always stings the trailer (no on-board genny!). Sometimes the good captain is busy and the other one just doesn't do anything for us, no power, terrible parking. …

The US public radio program To The Best of Our Knowledge just repeated a show from last Fall: ==== Surrounded by Sound In this hour, we find ourselves surrounded by sound. The sounds of nature, cosmic horror, capitalism, and experimental electronics. ==== The hour is built of interviews with several people. Three that stood out (at least to me): Naturalist and soundscape artist Bernie Krause talks about his book, "The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World's Wild Places." Timothy Taylor talks about his book, "The Sounds of Capitalism: Advertising, Music, and the Conquest of Culture." Electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani ta…

Yesterday I received this E mail. At first I laughed , then I viewed the senders's web site, come to find they have recently graduated from college and I am guessing their age to be about 22-24. They claim to have been interested in film production since the age of 14. ( so impressive ) Also looking at the shoot location and the area where they live ( guessing with mom and dad )to be one of the wealthyist areas around, with home prices of 800k and up. Here is the email "I am shooting a short film April 29th and 30th in xxxxxxxxxx xxxxx and need location audio for both days. I was recommended to you. Would you be free to assist? We can pay $100 a day." First I…

I thought I'd give you guys some more 'Tales from the front lines.." I worked as a hired crew for the 168 film festival last weekend. They filmed 100% at CBS Radford studios, NY street and Stage 20. Low budget deal, but at least the lot makes it easier to move around. - Being a Christan group they prayed for the rain to stop, but I guess god wasn't listening. Under mostly outside shots, it rained pretty hard on Friday/Saturday. I actually worked from my van. My boom op wasn't so lucky though.. The boom even survived, and in general EVERYTHING got pretty wet. Pretty hard to work in pouring rain. - The rain did indeed stop, and for a while it was looking like smo…

"Thank you for supporting film history - by watching Talking Pictures TV!" This is a phrase I've been hearing regularly over the past several weeks thanks to the new Channel 81 on UK TV, Talking Pictures TV. Several wonderful and crazy gems from the British film industry have had airings and given a new lease of life. Often I'll find myself checking something out based just on a title as there's not much information to go on. A couple of days ago the familiar phrase "starring Robin Askwith" prompted me to set the reminder for the film "Cool It, Carol!". Before I started watching I didn't really expect to make it far into the film or beyond the first adverts break…
