Here is a crazy product I just ran across, call "AnyGlove". http://anyglove.com/ A few drops on the end of your glove fingers allows you to use any type of touch screen. For all of you phone and tablet users this winter. Enjoy. David

Hello, I am curious to know why in many Hollywood movies the video assist person is credited alongside the sound team? I even saw it listed in the sound department in several templates of film production budget software. Anyone could explain? (In France the video assist is and has always been part of the camera department hence my curiosity). Thanks Fred

As an independent freelancer such as myself, I'm thinking about a new pay schedule that would make more sense to my clients. I want to charge by the word.. I'm thinking about 70 cents per word is good.. Music Videos and B-Roll crews would benefit the most, while I can still do well on my bread and butter stuff like Reality TV Shows, Dramas, and Documentaries.. What do you guys think? -Richard

I have a MKE50 on a boom running into my Canon C100 for field interviews. I bought a Baby Ball Gag and a Rycote Windjammer that slips over it for windy conditions. When using both my resulting sound isn't as bright, is more muffled, and there aren't many in-camera adjustments to adjust the signal to counter it. What actions can I take to help brighten the signal (either mic placement or mixer adjustments, or Logic/FCPX/Pro Tools effects to add in post)?

The City's legislative analysts office just finished a report on what each lost show actually costs the local economy - in this case, the tax revenues generated by the production of each episode of an hour-long drama (Ugly Betty). I have the report - but I'm not sure how to post it here. It's a 2mb PDF. -- Eric This is from a press release from L.A. City Councilman Eric Garcetti's office: REPORT SHOWS LOSS OF TELEVISION SERIES PRODUCTION COSTLY TO LOCAL ECONOMY Study conducted by Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation is result of Garcetti’s “Ugly Bettyâ€ motion LOS ANGELES -- In response to a motion authored by Los Angeles City Counc…

Yesterday, along with Chris Howland and the LA Sound Mixers, I hosted a seminar called The Unscripted Sound. In it, we discussed what goes into recording audio for reality tv shows, and the differences between scripted and unscripted mixing. You can watch the recording of it here (even without a facebook account): https://www.facebook.com/LASoundMixers/videos/886368908570884/ And of course, you all know I love talking all things audio. If anyone has any questions, or want to talk one on one, please reach out and we can discuss it further! Thanks!

Does anyone feel that working on set makes you better at remembering names? This may be a weird question but I feel that ever since I started working production I am getting much better at remembering names on the first try. Does anyone share this feeling? I think meeting large groups of new people all of the time forced my brain to make some sort of adjustment in the name remembering section (yes - that is the scientific name for it).

http://www.americanmovieco.com/lytro-camera-light-field-technology/?utm_source=Lytro+Camera%3A+The+End+of+Green+Screen&utm_campaign=Augmented+Reality+Hololens&utm_medium=email Has anyone seen evidence of this LYTRO technology in use? Even if it's a hoax, it's a good one. I see a possible breakthrough in sound using analagous technology. Are the much slower sound waves and their travel through the medium of air (or other media) different enough from the photon-composed waves of light to have no relevance here? It seems the signal-processing requirement could be less than the 40K they are using (?)? The idea that focus is a thing of the past, if applied…

That is, he is obsessive about the sound quality of his music. A onetime audio engineer who now works as a consultant for Stereo Exchange, an upscale audio store in Manhattan, Mr. Zimmer lights up when talking about high fidelity, bit rates and $10,000 loudspeakers. But iPods and compressed computer files — the most popular vehicles for audio today — are “sucking the life out of music,…

Hi all, Question to my fellow NYC mixers out there: I was shooting in Queensbridge Park in LIC the week before last and something was sitting very heavily on the 216 MHz block. We tried about ten frequencies on the Comtek and none of them were good. We eventually found a workable frequency on TV ch. 6 but even the range on that was severely limited to normal behavior. Anyone have any idea what's sitting on 216 over there? Thanks!

Any film/video sound pro will appreciate the unprecedented collaboration of sound and picture in the movie "Baby Driver". This article is an interview with Production Mixer Mary Ellis, her crew, and editor Paul Machliss, about what it took to make it happen. https://soundandpicture.com/2018/02/baby-driver-production-mixer-mary-ellis-and-editor-paul-machliss/

Hi all! I have a gig coming up where we will be shooting a DJ concert. I will be recording direct to camera which requires me to follow the camera man around. Apart from me recording to camera, I am planning on recording the concert from the "tape out" of the main console with a zoom as a backup. My question is: Which mic would be more suitable for this gig? My options are: 416, Oktava MK012 (omni, cardioid or hypercardiod) or Shure sm58?! My guess is that a stereo mic would be the ideal but I don't own one... As usual thanks for your help!

Hello all - Just want to introduce myself formally here. Been lurking for awhile now and soaking up all of the amazing info around here. I do primarily post work but also some location stuff from time to time. My main bread and butter is recording music and post but try to learn as much as I can so I at least know who to call when I don't know something. Looking forward to learning more and more from everyone here. Have to say this place beats most of the other forums out there in terms of information sharing and people who actually KNOW (or at least seem to ;-) ) what they're talking about. Cheers, Travis

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/steven-spielberg-predicts-implosion-film-567604 I think Spielberg is 50% right here.. I believe the big 7 will make less films.. But the audience won't put up with that.. they will clamor for more content, leaving the gate wide open for more smaller independents to fill those gaps. Just my take. -Richard

On the advice of a friend, I began watching "Money Heist." As he mentioned the ADR is pretty amazing. If you're not looking for it, you can go a ways without noticing. Was there a special approach to achieving this effect?
