Hi there, I have a scene with dialogue where the actor will be on a bike. We will do the dialogue part on a trailer. Fortunately there will be no genni but I`m concerned about wind on mic and the engine of the trailer-car. How is booming dialogue at 30km/h (around 20mph)? Is it possible or will it suffer from heavy wind noise? I will have lavs too but the actor wears a T-shirt only so proper wind protection will not be possible due to the tight wardrobe. He will be talking to his cellphone but even if I put a mic into the phone how will I run the cable? And the tx is small but not small enough to hide it inside a prop phone or something like that. And he doesn`t…

Hi, I am new to the site and the craft. I wanted to know if anyone here uses a bike as a method of transportation. I am not sure if it applies to mixers considering they have a cart, but i could be wrong. I figured boom operators and or sound utility men might have the ability.

I just saw the opening of Hardball with Chris Matthews, and both the preshow tease, and the first minute of the show had all the sounds normally there, except for Chris Matthews mic! He was talking the whole time, on camera, and no sound! Having worked in live TV, I get some great Schadenfreude from seeing this and imagining the panic in the control room. I'd love to hear some stories of broadcast audio nightmares?

Hi All, I have an older hardwired Audio Technica Pro 7A LAV that I was hoping to use for occasional public speaking gigs ; in emergencies when wireless is a problem. It runs with a hard-wired single AA battery pack. My issue is that AA batteries are no longer fitting into the battery compartment - the battery (brand new Duracell) is too long and therefore too tight to get into the receptacle. I'm afraid to force it in and cause damage. I could swear that when I first got the mic a AA would fit without any issues. Have they started making these current AA's a bit longer? Inside the compartment it indicates a "UM-3" battery, a Japanese AA equivalent? May…

Dave Schneider died Tuesday of lung cancer. He was an interesting guy to work with - I enjoyed the few times I got to do so. The guy had a ton of stories to tell and people always had a ton of stories to tell about him. His last project was mixing the NCIS: Los Angeles series. I'm not great at writing eulogies but I know there are a few guys here that know him and I thought they should know about his passing. RIP Dave. PS. Can I have your restored Bronco now that you're not going to use it anymore?

The union will not post here nor do they read this board. They are mired deep in fear and paranoia. So this is from me (free form all fear, paranoia and obligations as I am no longer dues paying): The Commercial Contract has only two Pay Scales for Local 695 members. There is a minimum call of 8 hours but most folks work on a 12 hr guarantee (higher than the minimum). The current classifications are: Sound Mixer...... .......$66.33/hr Boom Oper....... ......$44.78/hr Sound Utility...... ......$44.78/hr VTR/Video Playback... .$44.78/hr The 44.78 rate goes up to 45.68 on Oct 1 2011. For 12 hr 44.78 x 14 = 626.92 that's 4 hr at 1.5 time ( the deal…

Yup, sprayed by a lion today, just enough to know I'm his now. I had moved my rig away from the cage a minute before when the trainers warned us it was coming. The all clear was given so I moved back in, but his aim was fast and true. I think he got three of us, make-up and a little on camera, which was not rolling. BTW we were outside his main cage all along. The trainers encouraged us to spray right back. : )

So it has happened again 3rd time in 2 months I quote what I think is a fair rate of 550/10 for a basic mix package with breakaway tether to camera for a small job. And the guy counter offers with 350 for the day with gear. The last one was even worse and wanted me to throw in a 744t for the 350 instead of the 800 it should have cost him. Has the floor fallen out of the rates with the film types or am I missing something. The only thing these have in common as far as I know is the jobs originated from the local producers association. Which here is composed mostly of film and episodic types. Am I missing something here I mean I get paid better and do a lot …

I've seen some news anchor people wearing two lavs next to each other. For example, Piers Morgan wears two lavs. What is the reasoning behind it?

I wanted to report my experience using the new Apple App., just released last Thursday called MovieSlate, from PureBlend Software. I and about ten other mixers have been beta testing it for well over three months. The overall concept is to have the Camera, Sound and Script all on a wifi network each writing their individual reports, networked so as slate changes, camera lens data and the sound log are all shared. The common tool is an Apple iPad, but it will also function on an iPhone and iPod Touch. At the end of the day our individual reports can be emailed to Editorial, Production etc. I look at it as a beautiful way to enter my sound log informat…

Ok, so I'm still quite a newbie when it comes to sound so please excuse my question if it sounds silly. Does anyone have advice as to how to kill/tone down an echo in a large room. I'm helping a friend out tomorrow with a student gig of his and so we will be shooting in a large warehouse/studio type location (floor is concrete with high ceilings). I noticed a slight echo when I did some preliminary testing. I was wondering if there were any tips you guys may have that can help me out. Any info is immensely appreciated. Thanks, MIke

Title says it all. I just want to be protected in case something happens, theft, fire, etc... Whether in my house, car, or location. Who do you use? How much do you pay for what kind of coverage? Have you ever had to use it? Thanks!

I've been searching for over an hour to no avail. There was a mention of a really good medical tape product that wasn't any of the usual products. I can't remember what it was called. Does anyone remember it and what it was called? Thanks for your help! Bernie

I'm mostly working out of my bag on documentaries, shorts and a few times a year a commercial. I noticed that some of the time it is nicer if my bag hangs on a manfrotto (today I ordered a manfrotto monitor stand to put my bag on). Few things I experience; this way I'm able to control it and fully use it but don't carry the weight. I'm more flexible booming from one position. If needed I can mount another boom on the manfrotto to capture off camera dialoog. When building for the next scene it's really easy to move the manfrotto and have my own nice personal stand and space for sound. It's also handy for getting some space between transmitters and receivers in the bag…

Just in the last couple of weeks, my post house received a 35mm high-budgeted commercial for dailies, with the sound recorded at 96kHz (24-bit). My eyebrows were raised by this. Internally, our plant is 100% 48kHz AES/EBU digital audio: the router, every DA, every VTR, every server, every Avid, and every mixing console in the building is only capable of handling 48kHz. Technically, the Fostex DV-40s and 824s we use can play back 96k, but I'm not sure there's a point to it. (We do have one or two newer Yamaha consoles that can handle 96kHz, but we'd still have to SRC down to 48k before the signal left the room.) My question is two-fold: 1) how many mixers are usin…

Why Dante? 1 2 3

I'm starting a new topic, an off shoot of the thread started by Richard Lightstone: "Future-Proofing Deva to Dante Network" because I think the topic brought up a lot of related issues and was somewhat disingenuous with its faux concern for the future of Zaxcom and the Deva. There is a rather extensive discussion on this topic over on the jwsound on facebook group and my conclusion after reading all of that regarding Dante support is this: for the sound mixers who are using the Yamaha and needing to utilize all 16 (main) inputs and output busses to feed the recorder (any recorder) digitally, Dante would simplify the cabling and be a more elegant and straightforward me…

I'm new to the forum but glad to find it thanks to someone over at the Sony Vegas forum. My wife Sarah and I film and produce a PBS television series called Painting and Travel. We shoot on location and often auto traffic, etc is a problem as I'm doing one of my paintings on camera. I need to use a lavalier mike and we have two. One omni directional and one lavalier. Both sennheisser. I recently was told that an "un-sensitive" mike is what I need. I was not familiar with this term. Can anyone begin to clarify this and give me some suggestions as to what we might use. I didn't know it but apparently the mics come rated as -20db, -40db, etc. I'd sure like to get a mic…

Last Saturday.. I'm asleep in my nice warm bed. The phone rings about 5am. A producer calling. I couldn't make it out of my bed fast enough, but I called him right back. He says that his sound guy just got into a bad accident, and just totalled his car on the freeway. Can I make it there by 8am? So, this makes my brain start searching, trying to think about all the stuff I wanted to get done that day, or appointments that I had, or any other commitments I might have made. I asked him about the gig, and what does it entail. And I then asked what does the gig pay? The voice on the end says, $50 bucks.. I said, 50/ per hour? He says.. no, $50 bucks.. …

Hi all, i am a newbie to this group and let me start of by saying that i have found an excellent group of profeesionals i have been a sound mixer for some time for ENG/DOCS /TELEVISON and have since moved on to working in features my questions are- what amount of ADR( as percantage of production sound) is done in a typical big budget hollwood commercial film or average hollywood film, even indie films for thatmatter, do they vary,in terms of using poduction sound i woild like to have examples of big budget hollywood flms that have used extensive ADR an how they matched it with the production sound also similar ones using extensive production sound(done …

Yesterday Michael Miramontes came into the studio yesterday to watch us while we were mixing 12 monkeys. What we do is mix for a bit, then answer any questions that might arise. The issue of lavs came up, and we talked about the importance of them. I have seen in discussions, even here, that the opinion is, they are there as a backup in case the book is unusable. Well, that simply isn't true anymore. Especially in the world of television. The majority of what we use in a mix these days are lavs. Because of so many shoots are using two cameras, the boom is either impossible to get into the scene, or when it is, it's unuseable. So, make sure your lavs are in…

Hi All forgive me if this topic has been covered already but what is the feeling about the longevity of NP style batteries. Mine need replacing for my fusion but I get the impression Down Under that they are a thing of the past now. That would be a pity as I have a couple of NP boots for powering wireless and IFB and I use them in my Fusion. Just want to check before investing in this technology again. Cheers Tony Johnson

I seem to have an increase in calls from producers calling me for half day of work- The call usually goes something like this- 'It's only a couple of sit down interviews shouldn't take more than 4 hours what's your rate for just half a day? What do you guys think of this- I often feel that if I book a half day then it's not as though I can take another gig to fill the other half of the day and so I should be paid a full day. These gigs have pretty much taken me out of the loop for the day anyway.
