60 MINUTES broadcast a segment a few weeks ago that was the most thorough and compelling story regarding the necessity of SLEEP in all of our lives and the consequences of chronic sleep deprivation that is so prevalent in our world. I have posted the full segment, less advertising, on my website. SEE IT HERE Note: I'm not crazy about my coding on my website for this video. I may take it down and optimize it better for streaming. Between here and facebook there is a regular flare up about people undercharging for equipment. While there are some places that post their rates, or offer price lists/books on request. It's not trade secrets, and most of this info is scattered throughout the site, but sometimes hard to find because it's a tangent to another thread. Does anyone object to this? Ignoring the camera houses that give gear for one day weeks, it seems to make sense for everyone to be on the same page. Those camera houses hurt sound rental companies as much as they hurt us. When a producer makes a kit request with a crazy low price, it would be an easy way to counter with a price that's fa…

I am setting up the TC workflow for this tv pilot. Sony Pictures procedure at this point is to issue Denecke sync boxes (I don't know what model) which I am to jam from my Deva at 29.97. Then boxes go on cameras and on Deva (with Deva set to continuous jam). TC is fed to camera as audio on Ch. 2. I haven't gotten sync boxes yet but with Deva set to 29.97 and jamming Denecke TS-3 slate, I see "snc error 30" on slate. The slate is set to position 1 which is 29. The older TS-2 (just upgraded to support 23.98 which we are not using) does not display this (but I think the TS-2 doesn't display these messages anyway). So, what gives? Why the error message?

In the last couple weeks there was a mixer thread somewhere Facebook wherein a work-for-us-free producer was trounced in the best tradition of web trouncing. Pitchforks were employed with impunity. Digital blood was shed. I was appalled and embarrassed for us. My sense is that--beyond the natural scrum-i-ness of the internetz--"professional" mixers who search for and find work on Mandy's and Craig's List dig their own professional graves and oil the no-budget machine they profess to abhor. Even so, this is exactly the right place for student mixers to get work. Once you find these places raise your blood pressure this means only one thing: it's time to take th…

I know one can easily find online recordings/samples made with the Zoom H2n but still I´d like to ask here: does anyone have any unprocessed, 24bit/48khz (or 96khz) quiet to medium busy ambience recordings done with this portable recorder? I have been thinking of buying one ever since it came out and even though it is not such a big investment I would still like to be sure if it has the minimum quality to be usable in film. I do not want to carry my 788T + Stereo Mic rig around everywhere to record ambience. If anyone has any 10 second or so snippets of an audio recording they feel is a good example of the H2N´s capabilities, I`d be thankful if they could post a d…

I just wanted to say thanks to Laurence Abrams from IATSE 695, and the very nice people at J.L. Fisher for taking over two hours of time with me today on the Fisher Boom. I have never been to the facility before, but they have an amazing machine shop there, and hundreds of booms ready to go! I got some great hands on training on the 16' and 26' models, and though I did well, I got a lot of appreciation for this remarkable piece of equipment, and for the people who operate them! If anyone reading is a 695 member, I encourage you to take advantage of this service, and if you're not, I bet that J.L. Fisher would let you come in and look around too! What's even better, I foun…

I will be starting a feature film shoot with the Sony F-55. The final delivery will be DCP, but the camera cannot record 24 FPS with the current firmware. It will only do 23.976. Since I'm in Europe, I have always been able in the last 30 years to ignore this silliness of fractional frame rates. But now I need to understand it's implications. The thing I don't understand is why some timecode generators and audio recorders have a separate 23.976 fps setting. We would have a TC generator on the camera, synced to the audio recorder (Sonosax R4) , which records the time of day. Both the audio files and camera files store the time of the first frame. There is no more con…

Ok. I am currently in a huge debate about the mix down track... I have searched the topics, and cannot find any answers, so I am bringing the conversation to you all. I am being told: Mix tracks are obsolete, and unnecessary. With poly wav files, it is no different for post to sync a mix or the ISOs, so it makes no difference for post or for dailies. It is our responsibility as mixers to provide excellent ISOs, so post has everything they need to put it all together. Mixing boom and wireless together is not ideal in any situation. Mix tracks may have had a purpose when we only had two to four tracks to record to... But now, with 8-12 track, ISOs are the way to go an…

Alright, i know there are a lot of discussions about this but i read them all and still have some questions. Basically i would like to hear from people who uses the SRa not for a camera hop ( which i have plenty of experience with ) but in the bag/cart setup for talent. Let me give some background in order to show you what i need as infos. I am currently running 6x Lectros UCR411A/SMa block 21 with a 788T/CL8 in a Pegz2 bag ( about to explode ). The 411a are running thru a custom built antenna splitters system that use two 8 way Mini-Circuits splitters and two Lectros UFM50 block 21-22 amplifier filter. THis is feeding two Coax dipole flexible antenna. I make r…

I just received my letter from IATSE Local 52 that my application has been accepted an I am scheduled for the Sound Examination on August 21st. What types of things should I expect to see on there? I have heard virtually nothing about the test, and a search on here has turned up little recent information. Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Marc

Thought it might be a good idea to put together a list of where everyone is located so that if someone is looking for a mixer in a certain area they could check out the list. Adding contact info would be necessary of course. Since it's my idea, I'll go first. Eric Toline Ft. Lauderdale, Florida area audioetc@bellsouth.net 954-255-7628 P.S. If there are enough names added, perhaps Jeff could make a seperate heading for the mixers list.

Does anyone here have an opinion on the best dry erase marker for use with our slates. Non-staining markers that make a bold line. I know years ago a brand with Rite in the name was popular.

hi guys, i m just about to start a 20 day reality-show gig in California next month, as a canadian soundman, i never worked in the US, my gear never crossed the border either and i m afraid that the production company i m being hired by is new to the process of sending a people across the border for work.. we re all canadians for a canadian show paid in Canada.. i feel that the production company is undermining the complexity of it all.. any fellow canadians sound people that have been through this could give me some pointers on the subject? last thing i want is not making it passed the border and having to hustle with the production company to pay me because it s t…

Sound on. My first post... I've been searching for films that convey the life of a sound recordist, especially focused on natural environments and ambient sounds. I imagine an adventurous traveller recording mysterious sounds in obscure, silent places. 0 results. Unacceptable! The "closest" I got was Berberian Sound Studio (2012), a film I saw in an empty, silent cinema in Edinburgh in 2012 This is almost the opposite of what I am looking for, as it's based in a studio Another inspiration was Upstream Color (2013). Here there is this strange guy recording pigs and other unconventional natural sounds. He then uses the sounds in a synth instrument. …

So I'm in an odd predicament. I'm going to be working as a Utility on one feature, while my kit works on another. This other production has requested that I invoice them for the equipment rental. Typically, when I'm mixing, I just submit my kit as a box rental, but since I'm not on payroll for this film, that isn't an option. I've been in the position numerous times where I'm renting gear to a production that I'm not involved with... but I suppose this feels a bit more formal (as they are renting my entire feature package for the duration of an entire feature). If you were to invoice as a vendor in this case, would you bill for sales tax? Thanks! Wyatt

Last night I said here (http://www.jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=2338.msg16207#msg16207) that I would compare my experience working with the Cantar X (1.88) with my Deva 5. The obvious major difference is the way each recorder allows you to get access to major features and make changes. The Cantar is based around a mechanical approach of utilizing various buttons, the "Main Selector" and what it calls the "Triple Crown". The Deva also uses buttons but they are mostly short cuts to access it's touch sensitive screen, where you can set every feature. (You can see photos of the Cantar and Deva at the bottom of my lengthy post to relate to what I'm blathering about.) …

I found this interesting.. http://www.cnbc.com/id/44713215 I suppose of anyone truely investigates the business of Hollywood, they would simply be blown away by all the people working for nothing, with the promise of 'real' future work. -Richard

Um, Im very confused. We have our own private health care. Yet the nation will be gearing up with Obama care. There will be a 'tax' I keep hearing about. Will my check now be reduced even more by supporting others? Anyone out there know about this? I can't have MORE taken out. I'd love to hear from anyone knowledgeable about this. Thanks. Erpi

Follow carts 1 2 3

My efforts to make my main cart smaller and lighter have put additional strain on my follow cart. The main cart used to carry 2 fishpoles, almost all the mic cable needed and most all of the microphones in the drawer. Now, the main cart has all the recording equipment, the wireless receivers, Comtek xmtr, very little cable and rarely carries the main fishpole. I am going to build a new follow cart and I have a question to all, but specifically to Crew C., about the follow cart. Crew, is your follow cart basically a rolling set of drawers? This is the direction I am going... just curious what others are doing.

For those who use the MKH50, have you ever had RF interference at any given location? This has rarely happened to me, 2 times in 3-4 years, but each time I've plugged in a second mic, my AT4073a, it has vanished. Just seeing if anyone else has experienced this or if I should have mine looked at.

Hi all, some of my sound and camera colleagues travel without ATA Carnet to countries within Europe (sometimes also outside Europe), especially to Russia etc. because of the major hassle it takes to get in and out of customs... I had some bad experience myself in Russia several times (waiting half a day for someone to put a stamp on the papers... ) I have some travelling to do in the couple weeks and want to know if you always travel with Carnet? I was never asked for a carnet in the past, always saw it as my duty to travel fully legal.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Zoom on a boom 1 2
by Erik- 46 replies

Today I was at an outdoor music festival when a DSLR film crew showed up and started interviewing people. From the badges hanging around their necks, they appeared to be the official media crew of the festival. They had a sound guy. His entire sound equipment consisted of a Zoom H4n on monopod "boom pole" and a pair of cheap head phones with a long cord. It was rather windy so I suggested that he might want to spend at least $49 on a Rycote branded fuzzy for his Zoom from B & H Video. He looked at me like I was from Mars. Maybe we are all doomed by the Zoom cult.
