I am contemplating the purchase of a mini Solice and I have just read Glen Trew's short appraisal of using it with a couple of SSD 663. Glen was critical of the gain of the input channels and I wondered if any other user has had the same experience. PSC tell me that they have not had any other negative feedback about the gain and say that whilst it could be altered there are no plans to implement such a change.

I'm sub mixing effects mics for Crashed Ice. 24 Crown PCCs and a collection of stereo and mono shotgun mics on cameras along the course. I had great coverage all down the course and things were sounding great till the PA fired up. Trying to get the skate sounds to stick out in spite of the PA. Urging them to turn down the PA some but I still need to get those skate sounds to pop out. Any ideas? I'm sub grouping all the mics and have them divided along the track. I'm keeping the groups that aren't active down but I have the two zones near the PA that are masked too much by the PA. I'm on a Yamaha M7CLV3. Bernie

I have had numerous requests for an instructional video for FreqFinder. I had resisted because FreqFinder is still an ongoing project. However, Apple has made it simpler to create an app video by allowing screen recording in iOS 8. This took me about a day to complete, so I won't feel too poorly if I need to update the video if the user workflow changes: http://youtu.be/7_MkDMovzA8 (I apologize in advance for having stuck you with my speaking voice)

Hi All, I came across some news today that Sachtler will be absorbing Petrol bags. Here is a link to the Sachtler range http://www.sachtler.com/products/bags/audio-equipment/sound-bags/ They seem to be just rebranded with very minor changes but I'm curious, what are your opinions on rebranding of products?

Hi - This is a general appeal for help in locating any ambience recordings of Grand Central Terminal in NYC before 2000. That's the year I believe the old flap display boards used for departure times were replaced by an LCD board. I recall loving the sounds as they clacked away, and then one day walking through felt something was different and discovered they were gone... it was too late. So while the terminal rehab restored much of the architectural grandeur to the place, this took something away... a bit of lost acoustic history. Anyway, this is for a personal soundscape project I am working on. Thanks- Peter

I would like to hear from Thomas Varga about how he did the sound on "Birdman".It appeared to me to be an amazingly difficult job.

So, fine folks, most of you don't know me, but I'm a lurker and occasional poster here. I'm currently the full-time sound mixer at a small Boston production company, and I'm looking to make some career moves. I'm pretty much entirely self-taught, aside from some tips and tricks picked up from reading various production sound books, scouring this forum, and rarely, working with other soundies. I've been doing location sound seriously for around 4 years, and slowly building a kit. Most of my experience is with corporate, small indies, reality, and broadcast. The long-and-short of it is that I'm looking into moving to LA in 4-5 months. My girlfriend is sick of the w…

90% of the time in my professional life, I'm a post guy. I deal with the audio that professionals (and non-pros) in the field record and edit into their projects. 10% of the time I go out and do production sound myself for various jobs. I've never dealt with the harrowing 12 mic reality tv situations. I've never dealt with the high profile film gigs. I'm not to that level yet. I have good equipment. We charge appropriate rates. I went out on a job yesterday, and it just served to remind me how challenging the production audio job is, and how much work goes into getting it right in the moment. This was what would be considered for many of you a typi…

So, apparently every 17 years cicadas come out of the ground, hell bent on ruining your production track. If you live on the east coast, these little suckers will start appearing once the ground temp hits about 64 degrees, and they will be out literally in the billions all up and down the eastern coast. Supposedly they only live for 4 to 6 weeks, but that's plenty long to ruin some productions. Just a heads up in case you go on location scouts. this wants to ruin your takes

Have a listen to 'Take me to Church' by Hozier. In addition to the cool retro spring style reverbs and haunting melodic vocals there are several obvious analog tape edit or splice sounds embedded in the mix, and I think they're awesome! Any ideas how these sound are made exactly? I've been searching for an article online about the production of the record to no avail. I just love those little 'blip' tape sounds! I have an old Sony 1/4" reel to reel machine and will be experimenting with it, trying my best to recreate those sounds or maybe come up with others!

I just received word that John Reynolds has passed. He was a long time sound mixer and boom op in the state of Hawaii. He was such a great guy. One of the nicest sound mixers I have ever met. John specialized in ocean/surfing/Hawaii type work. It was common for him to be booming from a surf board or one of his own floatation device designs. John was a regular at the NAB show every year and the RAMPS party too. RIP John

Hi all, so lately I've been applying to feature film jobs via email (I even sent an old school fax too!) and including a simple cover letter introducing myself, then my resume with contact info, most recent credits and an equipment list. I haven't received many replies yet. Other than the 'who you know' factor, is there anything else I might be doing to sweeten my applications? Or perhaps am I omitting something important? I'd love to get more replies or phone calls from my applications. Thanks for any help and I'd be happy to email you my typical application as an example. All the best, Kevin.

I'm sorry if I am starting to sound like an old curmudgeon but why do people who have items for sale feel the need to "BUMP" the post constantly - and in some cases every other day. I'm not saying don't bump it but give it a few weeks.

We are going to do my wife's shirt this year. 20 minute short. One location, 2 day shoot. 95% one actress. The rest 2-3 actors. What would it cost to hire a good mixer with equipment for two days?

Since these young people are talented musicians but no professional audio recordists (and no professional steadycam operators!!), I find this recording amazing. It seems to be no playback. An uncommon, creative, but effective recording technique. Which mikes are used?

Outside of sound point of view; how can "wide & tight" saves money from production? Faster shootings aka less days is the usual answer, but it's not increasing the cost of extra camera operator & focus puller? I mean on this scenario (wide & tight) and not two cameras shooting simultaneously two close ups which make more sense for me. It's not take more time to DoP and Gaffer to light the scene for wide & tight? Thanks

So I just started watching "The Wire". First off amazingly realistic feeling show. The characters are intense. The camera work is very interesting and documentary like, in fashion, but merged with some nicely orchestrated dolly moves. The thing I am most excited about is the audio given some of the framing. I checked out IMDB and found out that it's Bruce Litecky. Wondering how much of the show was boom if any and what kind of wires were used on the show (ie Tx Rx/mics), and what kind of mixer/recorder set up was used. Haven't really checked out American Horror Show but I've read about the sound mixer in Sound and picture. On "The Wire" I heard a few poin…

Tom, It now says on the website that the Tascam DR-10's are not available in the US. Why? I assume that means Canada as well. I really want a couple. How can I get my hands on some?

Hello, currently I´m having a hard time making the decision in regards to lavalier wireless systems. Lectros 411s are totally out of my reach. I was looking for something better that the Sennheiser G3s and I saw the Sony UWP D11 series. They seem very sturdy and what I´ve seen they do a pretty good job rejecting RF, I also like the dual antenna to reduce drop-outs and lastly the UHF phase lock. However, this Sony model seems fairly new and the mic input is 3.5mm. With that, my second choice are the Lectros 100. But I haven´t really found a lot of useful reviews on those bad boys. A fellow sound mixer told me that those are Ok (compared to the 411s). But how about tho…
