Hi All. I'm putting together an article for P3 Update for December's issue and the topic I've been given is Recording Audio in Extreme Weather. It's a short article, only 250 words and they are mainly looking for product placement so I have enough content to write it. But this article has me fascinated by the topic and I am interested in hearing people's stories about weather related problems they've encountered and how they were able to solve them. Most of my work has been bag work around LA so the weather's consistently nice. I have worked in extreme heat in the desert where dust has caused the most problems... and I've worked in the rain... but I would l…

While searching for a place to record nature sounds - without any helicopters, planes, cars, and other noise pollution created by us humans - I came upon this podcast, some of you may find interesting: http://www.onbeing.org/program/last-quiet-places/4557 I guess I was spoiled in this regard as a child, growing up in Sweden, spending the summers in my parents' summer house out in the forest... where all you'd hear was the wind in the trees, birds, insects, fish breaking the surface of a lake etc. Not sure if it's the work, or a simple matter of getting old hah! But I miss that kind of "silence".

A couple of weeks ago someone pilfered my cable bag out of my car. This bag mainly had longer cables, SDI and antenna cables in it. Luckily my return cable and a 15m cable were left at home. While this pissed me off and it will cost me around the grand mark to replace them, I later realised the biggest loss was of a sentimental value. One of the long XLR cables 'Big Greenie' had been with me my entire career. It was one of the first cables I had made. Though the XLR's have been replaced a number of times. The memories this cabled held for me whilst booming. Freezing my arse of in the middle of winter booming in storm water drains in the middle of the night, running thro…

Hi, For those of you that haven't heard, the owner of the building which houses the Cafe Edison (or The Polish Tea Rooms, if you like) plans to close it down and replace it with a fancy restaurant with a "name chef." Even as someone who is only rarely in Manhattan, the Cafe Edison has always been a place where I've felt at home: basic food at basic prices in the heart of the city. Ira Glass, he of This American Life, feels pretty strongly about this and has started a web-site where you can post a message to the owner, asking him to reconsider: it's here if you want to add your voice: http://www.deargeraldbarad.com Manhattan will always be in a state of flux an…

So, I replaced a mixer the other day on a new "reality/reno show" because he was apparently overzealous with his RM remote app. I'm serious. I only did a few days as they had another guy booked for the following week. I got a call yesterday asking if I was available because the current replacement doesn't own any of those "small lav mics" (smv) and his recording system isn't really what they need or want. I wasn't available. So finnicky.

WOT (Web of Trust, a website rating service) has given my book's new site a bad rating, because a previous owner of the domain was a spammer*. Please help me. If you belong to WOT, please take a moment to verify that GreatSound.info is clean... then give WOT a new rating. If you don't belong, you can log in to mywot.com with your Facebook or Google ID. No additional user info is taken, though they do verify your email address. It takes about 30 seconds to register. Then you can check any site's reputation for free... and help clean up mine. --- *greatsound.info was marked as spam / possible malware in 2011 and early 2012. The crooks then abandoned the…

Hi all, I'm a relative newbie and am looking to purchase my first boom mic, either a used mkh60 or new 416, to replace the me66 that a good friend lends me. I do corporates, no TV or film and don't see that changing anytime soon. I also do post mixing so would be using the mic for the occasional bit of foley recording. I've done some research here but always appreciate any further advice/comments. I know some don't seem to like the mkh60. I have limited access to both mic's for auditioning tests. What would you say are the pro & cons of either that I should be aware off. Obviously either will be a step up from the me66, which to be honest has been perf…

Hello all, I'm looking for good recommendations to give my producer for someone with a portable ADR/VO booth (trailer maybe?) for a union commercial shoot in Santa Monica on Monday. Good leads appreciated! Thanks, Charlie

I've never used this, and don't want to. What used to frustrate me about the mobile site was having to sign in every time. It wouldn't "remember me", even if promoted. That was a pain. That is no longer the case. I stay logged in. Perhaps the iOS update made it so. It's great. So if Tapatalk users want to go back to mobile site, which they previously abandoned, then they can. I guess there is some functionality lost in Tapatalk.

Two questions for the group…. Have you ever noticed that wireless reception gets less reliable when you're shooting outside in a parking lot full of cars? I had this happen once a while back and it stuck in my head. Wonder why? We were moving with booms at the same time and had the receivers and mixers in our bags. My thought was that with all that car metal for the RF to bounce off of, the signal was arriving at the receiver at different times (multipath) and that caused the breakup. And while I'm on the topic of metal and breakup, has anyone noticed a correlation between the number of clangy metal bracelets worn by the on-camera talent and wireless breakup of her…

Hey NY mixers and people near that area! December is here when our phones get quieter until spring. Let's celebrate another year by hanging out for an afternoon and networking, talking gear and business, but with beer! Join me at The Strand Smokehouse in Astoria on Sunday, December 14th from 2:30pm till whenever. They got BBQ, and of course, beer. For everyone who arrives before 3:00, I will buy your first beer. Address is 25-27 Broadway just off the Broadway stop on the N line. Please RVSP on the link or text me at (347) 525-7016 so I can get a headcount. Hope to see you there. https://www.facebook.com/events/729546210467534/?ref=2&ref_dashboard_filte…

Has anybody watched his videos? http://realitysoundschool.com/make-6-figures-in-audio/ Although the info is a bit general in nature (probably gets more specific in the paid videos), and I know from personal experience that I never even came close to making six figures in LA as a full time union boom op and mixer, I think he does a fairly decent job here of covering the basics. Won't be sending him my cash any time soon, but he seems like an OK guy. Anybody know him personally or have any thoughts about his videos?

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good online electronics course or book that covers the basics. I've done a little general searching, but it would be great if someone could point me to something that meshes well with the audio field in particular. I'd like to be able to read simple circuit diagrams and understand them, build and fix my own cables, and build some simple projects (for example, I want to build a bloop slate). Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello all, I recently discovered this forum and am learning new techniques/knowledge each time I log on and read. I wanted to reach out and ask for any advice anyone can lend? I'm based out of Austin, Texas and have primarily worked on shorts, several independent feature films, a couple of feature documentaries and am looking to take that next step up the metaphorical job pole that is the film industry. I'm a hard, disciplined worker who is always willing to learn new and innovative ways to capture the best audio possible. If anyone in the Austin/Central Texas area is in need of a boom operator or a sound assistant, I would greatly appreciate any and all who rea…

Well the old man here finally got a union job, not exactly a call from the union but the production company had a rush fast turn around call for the following day and I guess with all the work here in Chicago , the hall could not fill it. My reason for writing this is to complement the union members I had a chance to work with. Was a pleasure to work with a client and a director who knew what he wanted, a DP that knew how to get it fast and a gaffer and grips that got it done now. Oh and good food!!! I have worked on a number of features and even corporate jobs where the camera op wanders from the camera while rolling to check email on the phone or when a cut is …

from Time magazine on line https://time.com/3615160/sony-hack-salaries/ there is no mention here of bonuses and other sums they get which some say double the salary or more. of course this article does not go into why the company looses money so that mass layoffs ( at 500 in LA alone) were implemented. its just the nature of what capitalism has become. if you write to the author Sam Frizell please let us know of further information. (noone has said this is a scandal because this is commonplace now) Sony Executives’ Salaries Leaked in Devastating Hack Sam Frizell @Sam_Frizell Dec. 2, 2014 Michael Lynton, chief executive officer of Sony Pictures Entert…

Hi All, In these days of international money transfers combined with easy electronic transfers, I'm curious what the best way you have found to get paid by clients in other countries. I'm sure we've all been bitten by various payment schemes that had hidden costs, and was curious what was working well for people. ie, Paypal seems to have a 2.9% charge between US and Canada. ie I sent a payment to Germany for something recently and used a bank draft, and paid a significant amount for it, and then had the receiving bank take a similar amount off the back end without any warning, leaving the amount significantly short! (and the vendor I was dealing with som…

I seem to have an increase in calls from producers calling me for half day of work- The call usually goes something like this- 'It's only a couple of sit down interviews shouldn't take more than 4 hours what's your rate for just half a day? What do you guys think of this- I often feel that if I book a half day then it's not as though I can take another gig to fill the other half of the day and so I should be paid a full day. These gigs have pretty much taken me out of the loop for the day anyway.

Just out of curiosity, where do you think a verite style documentary should draw the line in terms of adding BGs, foleys, etc in order to stay "honest" to a subject/situation? Been watching/mixing a good amount of docs recently and am curious to know other people's opinions on this....

Hello board members, First time posting. I'm going to Los Angeles for a little bit next week. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on: 1. Stores where vintage, obscure or unusual instruments/gear are sold (or private collector/dealers) 2. Locations that are particularly nice for recording interesting sounds, perhaps something that is unique to LA. 3. Just general cool things to check out. Anything worth doing. Thanks for your time!
