used Schoeps is a better idea than new "budget priced" mic

I am going to be selling a few of my older Schoeps microphones so I have been reflecting over my prior use of these microphones and have come to much the same conclusion Don Coufal has voiced. The choice of microphone is probably the most important choice any sound person makes. The focus with equipment, so much of the time, is on the recorders, but the choice of recorder becomes somewhat irrelevant if the choice for the microphone is flawed. I encourage new users to experiment with the low priced "Schoeps like" microphones, most notably the Octavas, so that they can get accustomed to the characteristics of such a mic. Once the financial aspect is worked out (and we all k…

Believe it or not I was a soundman in college back 66,67(vietnam veteran, ranger). I did Glen Yarborough,Johnny Mathis,The Turtles live on stage and I had pro-mics hanging from stage ceiling that I would pot up/pot down as the artists moved on the stage. Now I am really excited about the sound carts you fellows use and I've got to learn more about how you set them up. My stage mics were fed in to pro- Ampex decks via a Collins sound board and I sat inside a professional sound room. Here's my question- Is it practical to have mics at different locations on a film set and actually pot up/pot down with the action. I had an idea about doing this on a production that I …

I decided to start a new topic here regarding the use of digital mixing consoles or analog consoles. I will weigh in with my opinions and experinece but I think I hold the minority opinion in this. I do know that many talanted, experienced and knowledgeable sound mixers are using full digital boards (like the various models from Yamaha) and some are using analog boards with some variety of digital interface to the recorder (or in some cases, a computer as the recorder). It is certainly true as well that you get a lot more "bang for the buck" with the digital units (this primarily being a function of marketplace: the digital boards in use by our small group of sound people…

I'm going to appear foolish by even asking this but... I need an answer. I have been using the Coopers direct outs to ISO, they are post fader not at all ideal. I am making up some TRS cables to use the inserts as my outs. Question is if I use the Tip and Sleeve to pins 1&2 xlr respectively. Do I have an impedence problem? I tried some adapters that were wired that way , seemed to work and sounded fine. Just wanted to wire up some cables to look neater. Thanks, LL

This recorder has been on the market for about 10 weeks. I'm love to hear user comments, which are to this point hard to come by. I'm interested in this recorder because I need a 2-track machine that will record time code. The only competitor, the Fostex FR-2 is quite a bit more expensive, and I don't need its capacity to generate code. Alas, the Sound Devices 722 is not time code capable, although I'd like to think that they are considering it. A 722 that supports Aaton Code is my ideal, if not yet realized, product.

Hi There and greetings from Scotland There is a thread on the METACORDER Forum regarding High Freq Whistles, I have eMailed Jim at BLACKBOXVIDEO http://www.blackboxvideo.com/ . He has kindly eMailed me the following info, it is of interest to anyone who is powering multiple toys from one source. Hello Brian Thanks for your Email - good to hear from you. It is true that the problems of whistles when using equipment powered from switch mode supplies is caused by "hash" from DC-DC converters. This is an increasing problem as more and more equipment uses switch mode power supplies for light weight and improved efficiency. Put simply, t…

Seeing Jeff's picture from " An Officer And A Gentleman" got me thinking about the use of the huge monster shotgun mics. How does the 816 sound ? I used one once during an interview, more for a lark rather then out of necessity. I just wanted to see how it sounded. It was under very controlled circumstances, in a studio setting, so i didn't need to go way overhead with the mic. It reminded me of the 416. The look on the interviewee was priceless, when she looked up and saw this huge mic just over her head, but i digress. How does it (and also the Mkh-70 and KMR82I) perform out on location ? Are you generally using it when you need to cover really wide shots ? Or are y…

I have a Sennheiser MKH50 that seems to conduct a large amount of handling noise. When on a pole I always have the low frequency roll off engaged, but I still have to use quite a bit of mixer roll off as well. I use the shockmout that comes with it and he mic still sounds good, but I'm just wondering if there are any other experiences like this.

I am prepared to buy these products off the shelf, but an informative and sobering article at www.locationsound.ca, and some of Jeff Wexler's comments on this forum, lead me to wonder whether I might be as well off, perhaps even better off, tinkering a little. Besides, I am in a state of shock after discovering that the Windpac, about which some people have reservations regarding build quality as well as performance, costs US$800. I would appreciate comments on design considerations and material selection. The one consideration that comes through lound and clear both in the Location Sound article and Mr. Wexler's comments is the importance of a good air cushion be…

Sound Devices has announced two new 2-track recorders, the 702 and 702T, that use flash card storage. Apparently the electronic specs are the same as SD's other 7-series recorders. This means that Sound Devices is producing an alternative to the FR-2 and the Tascam HD-P2. Unlike the Tascam, the 702T can be used to jam time code. The price for the 702T is apparently about two and a half times the street price of the Tascam.

Which ones are you guys using ? How well do they work ? Do you only use them for special circumstances such as music or EFx recording ? Ambiences, room tones in Stereo ? Better to go with one bodied mic or two seperate units ? I don't have a lot of experience doing stereo recordings for TV / Film purposes but i once set up a pair of stereo matched NT-5's to pick up the laughter during a scene at a comedy club. Post was pleasantly surprised to hear i had gone the extra mile to get a good stereo image. It sounded great to me. Really gave the crowd a sense of space. And you could hear one womans totaly silly laugh linger on just a little longer then everyone else's, in…

Inspired by the "View from the office" thread, i am pretty curious as to what bags people haul around, and what gear is in it. So, this threads purpose is pretty simple. Show me your bag, give a little description of what it contains, and what type of gigs you normally do. My "bag": The thing is, i have no bag yet. No cart either. So what you see, is what i have, the rest is rented for every gig. Gear list: Sound Devices 442 Sennheiser G3 kit Røde Lavalier Røde NTG-3 AKG K-271

I just sent my "B" TCDAT (HHB PDR 1000TC) and a Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro off to Trew consignment sales, if anyone is interested. The HHB was a backup machine and has very low hours. The Mackie was modded for 12 VDC by Alternative Audio in Burbank, w/ 4 pin xlr, AC/DC switch and separate DC fuse. AC operation is unaffected. Mixer is brand new, unused (for a project that didn't pan out). Philip Perkins

Forgive me if this topic has been discussed somewhere else before. Just went thru the SD 744t manual, and I am still cofused as to what the difference is between the two formats. I could probably forge a guess, but need to know exactly which one I should be using and what the difference is. Also, another question came to mind today: are you guys generally running in free run time code or 24 hour time code? Thanks for any help -Greg-

First off I want to thank Jeff for talking to me on the phone a few weeks ago. He was very helpful and provided me with some excellant prospectives on the industry today and some great stories. I posted this same Question on RAMPS but I know not all of you check there so here it is Thanks After reading the reviews and looking at the prices I think I am goinga Oktava MK-012. Can anyone give me some feedback regarding what you think of this microphone and where a good place to purchase one is. I found that www.sound-room.com sells them. Has anyone dealt with this company before? Thanks are there any other Oktava microphones I should consider buying for field use the p…

I have a cmc5/mk41 which I'm using for various documentary work, from sit-down interviews to following the subject around outside. I'm about to get a Rycore Baby Ball Gag and windjammer, but thought I'd post first to see if you have any other suggestions.

I've just heard that there seems to be a problem with the Fostex DV40 reading the BWFs from the Tascam P2. Everyone is mystified about why this is, but for now this is not the machine to use on a film shoot where the audio will be synced in a normal telecine bay. The use with any sort of video shoot or film shoot where the audio will be synced in a computer is fine. A bummer, to be sure. Philip Perkins

I was talking to a friend of mine last night who just got his Nomad - and he had some operations questions that I thought that other users may have as well. So I figured that we needed a thread to address specific operations questions. And some shortcuts and tips that are not in the preliminary manual can be added - because at this point Nomad is evolving quicker than the manual. First my friend had an issue that Nomad wasn't booting up quickly. It turns out that he didn't have a formatted primary card installed in the unit. If there is no card Nomad will search for a card during boot up - Nomad will boot up but it will increase the boot time. He also had an issue …
