I've been buying stuff and fluffing up my toolbox with the usual barrels, adapters, cables and connectors. Any secret weapons we should all know about for typical or atypical situations that you're finally ready to talk about? Any 'once in a lifetime' war stories are welcome.

This giant photo/audio/video retailer has become the poster child on this site for indifferent big box retailing. It is a big box, high volume shop but, from my recent experience, it’s hardly indifferent. I was recently visiting in New York and decided to drop in and check out the actual store. Like many of you, I’ve been receiving their catalog for years but have never been a customer. (The catalog just arrived one day; I guess I’m on a list.) Besides, I had need of a camera filter that I wasn’t finding at my usual sources. So, we trekked over to 34th street between 8th & 9th Avenues. It’s a big operation, as this photo I cribbed from the Internet sho…

My schoeps cmc641 suddenly developed a rattling noise when I swing it side to side- I can only hear it through the headphones- not by putting my ear next to it. It almost sounds like there is a very small grain loose inside it. It was working perfectly fine two days ago. Has anybody had this problem? Oh, and I tried switching cables and inputs. Im pretty sure its the mic. Thanks, Jon

I just got my Nomad 8 last night, and I'm running it through a lot of tests this weekend so I feel comfortable using it to record some classical music on monday. I was hoping to record the concert at 96khz, but I can't get the Nomad to record at 96khz for more than 30 seconds or so. As soon as I start recording I hear 3 consecutive beeps in the HPs and then the recording stops. I'm guessing this has to do with write speeds to the CF cards??? I'm using brand new 16 gig SanDisk Extreme CF cards which were formatted in the Nomad. The Nomad manual says to make sure my CF card can support 10MB/s sustained write speeds, but I can't find reliable specs on the sandisk …

Eric has found a terrific mixer from Collins that most probably could beautifully complete almost any job I would want to do at this point in my career. It's not a bag mixer, that's for sure, but would sit nicely on my sound cart.

I recently did a shoot where I needed 2 extra inputs on my Deva V, and having an SD552 I thought I could use the AES outs on that to go into the Devas AES in to utilize the 10 tracks. During my prep day I found the audio signal going into the Deva was pretty lousy with popping and clicking on it, however the signal going into the 552 was fine. I abandoned the AES experiment and decided to use the 552 as a seperate but time code linked recorder (a bit of a faff but not the end of the world). I realized that it was clearly something I was missing, and having never really dealt with AES before. my research afterwards led me to the importance of word clocking- somet…

I normally use either tram or cos11 with my lectro radios, but there has been a few occasions that although the cable is cream or withe, the shirt or blouse of the actors is very see-through and you can see the cable. Or the material is too tight and it creates a vein like effect. I have 2 Countryman B6 that normally are very good in this cases, as the cable is hair thin; but i find the sound a bit thin and very sensitive to clothing noise. What other options are around with such a thin cable? the actual size of the mic is also good, but now as critical.

Hi, I was hopeing somebody could help me find a company or Sound Recordist that will hire radio mics in Tokyo, Japan. We are shooting a few scenes for a film in central Tokyo over 3 days. I am taking my own equipment but I would like to hire some receivers and transmitters in legal registered frequencies. I have tried General Trades but it seems their company has liquidated. Some General Traders staff started a company called Tech Trust but they don't specialize in hirage, only sales. I have read an artical by Steve Nelson http://soundandpictu...2010/index.html and have emailed him. Any suggestions appreciated, Thanks, Fred

Tascam Dr-40 anyone here using one? Are you able to name files and if so how easy/fast is it on the fly? Thanks for any input. I did read the manual but it doesn't go into much details but again I could have missed/overlooked info. Nicole

whilst i am waiting for Howy to get the chance to enable routing an output to a disk track on the Nomad - about a month before he has worked through his list of stuff he needs to do before he gets to that from the last conversation we had. just wondering what people are doing to record a backup of what is sent to camera. about to start a show where i will be sending wirelessly 2 tracks to camera so want to have a backup recording on the nomad rather than the trx900. at the moment, ive made up a cable to route output 5/6 into return 3/4 so i can record the same as i am sending to the trx900/sta150 from output 1/2. but this relies on the cable not failing or crack…

Hey guys. I'm sorry if this is a really basic question. I currently own a SD552 Mixer and I'm looking to purchase a 744t to expand my track count. I know there is the 788t and that is a great piece of kit. However my reasoning behind the 552/744t combination is for the ability to quickly separate my recording kit into 2 recorders. I'm only recording FX/atmospheres these days so i need to be able to, for example; continue using the 552 'off the shoulder' and placing the 744t inside say a car with another person operating it. My question is if both the 552 and 744t are in my bag together, is it as simple as having the correct cable to feed timec…

My entire production sound package is for sale. This is a turnkey package with top equipment, including all of the adapters, interconnects and widgets that make it work. This could be an ideal situation for a Boom Operator or Utility Sound Technician who does not wish to go through the aggravation of putting their mixing kit together. There is a list for anyone interested. Please see additions to this post under the correct category: "Want to Buy - Want to Sell"

I’m trying to remote roll a dv-824 and a PD6 simultaneously with one switch. I was reading in the fostex manuals about how when certain pins are grounded the functions are supposed to be activated.. IE RECORD, STOP.. I built a switch with a 3PDT toggle to control a GREEN/RED LED and separate ground to record and stop pins for two machines.. The LED works fabulously, but sadly the devices are not responding.. Does anyone know what I may have done wrong? All the connections are going where they are supposed to according to the manual.

Got the new rf grounding plate from Zaxcom yesterday (thanks again Glenn), and came straight home to see what kind of results I'm getting with it. First off I want to say that, yes I don't have an optimal separation of wireless blocks (shown in pictures)... but oh well... hasn't been the end of the world yet. I am not currently using the Tx filtered antenna, but after discussing with Glenn about it and the addition of this mod I should have eliminated mostly all the spray I'm seeing. These pictures are shown with the use of the standard 1/4 wave whip on the TRX900aa, with the antenna removed... all rf spray on the nearby Rx's is completely gone. Hopefully…

Hi guys! I'm going to shoot a doc. with the new Sony F3 camera running at 50i frame rate. Should I have my SD 788T time code frame rate at 25fps or something else? Thank you very much!
