Following on from the running a backup thread I was wondering how much redundant gear do people carry with them to swap out if needed? Back up recorder, spare mixer? How much redundancy is too much?

http://oktava.com/inc/sdetail/183/687 I have an Oktava 012 I will use primarily indoors (in addition/backup to a CS3e that has full blimp) but looking for cost effective windscreen to allow boom movement. I'm not sure if the standard foam pop screen will handle indoor boom movement. I came across the above and wonder if it's a wiser choice..potentially allowing some level of outdoor protection. I eventually would like to pick up a used baby ball gag/jammer but a new set is too much. Anyone have experience with a standard foam or the above? Thanks, Rich

I have a situation I am trying to solve with the equipment I have at hand but there seems to be a flaw somewhere: Two condenser mics (Oktava MK012) will be planted on a table. Phantom power is provided to them by a Denecke PS-2. Its out are connected via mic out cables to two Lectro LMas. Now the signal I receive (via a SRa) is extremely noisy. I thought it might be the mic out cables (XLRf to TA5f) but they work well when I plug a dynamic microphone onto them/the LMa (without the PS-2). So I connected the PS-2 outputs directly to my mixer and it sounded good, no noise like with the LMas. So the last part of the chain would be the LMas but they work flawlessly with…

I flew home today from a small regional airport. At check-in, our camera batteries (IDX Endura 10s) were refused for the cargo hold - they had to be carried on. So the 8 batteries were split amongst myself, the cameraman, and the director. We got through security just fine (though I was treated to my second random pat down this year. I was tempted to tip the guy $5, but I've heard humour doesn't go over well with them), and we walked on the tarmac towards our plane, a DASH-8, with overhead luggage space good for coats, but too small for most carry-on. We dropped our bags (containing the 8 batteries) on the skycheck cart, and got on board. For those who don't know, sky…

Hi all, First post on the board. I am currently struggling with my two sets of G3 transmitter/receivers in terms of range. I find that I am getting only approximately 15-20 feet of range from the talent before experiencing major static noise and rips. I am getting this around corners at an even shorter distance. One of my Tx/Rx sets is brand new, another set about one year old. One set is on the 566-608 range, one is 516-558, both experience the same problem to different degrees. I asked Sennheiser, and both ranges are acceptable for where I am shooting in India, they said I should be getting 50 meters where I am. I really don't think it is geograph…

One of the Red Camera regulars recently posted a message about a Zacuto (DSLR camera accessory manufacturer) website columnist who wrote a piece that essentially says: "don't bother using expensive wireless microphones. Instead, get a cheap solid-state recorder like a Roland or Zoom recorder, put it on the actor, wire them up with a lav, roll the recorder, and let it go." Here's a sample: "The disadvantage of wireless is a huge deal to filmmakers. You have no control over possible interference, dropouts, and most wireless systems only carry the signal. They do not actually record it. The signal to noise ratio is noisier than a wired signal because the transmitte…

Hi, I'm doing one of those shows that has a free-style clapper loader that changes slates at the speed of light. I find that I change the slate number on the primary card and it doesn't change on the mirror card. I guess that if I change the mirror mode to normal in stead of continuous (which I prefer) it would write the file after the renaming, therefore with the corrected slate number. Is there another way to rename the files in the mirror card other than that? Why does not mirror the changes made on the primary card as is a "continuous". The assistant editor is calling me too many times and is not good! Thanks, Manel

I'm assembling a few cables and I can't figure out how the circular backing plate goes on the BNC connector. It's just the little plate to close off the opening. It doesn't screw in, I can't get it to pop in and lock, and it doesn't appear to be crimped, soldered, or pounded into place. Any ideas as to how it goes in? I'll post a photo I snapped with my phone. www.matthewfreed.com Production Sound Mixing for TV, Films, and Commercials

I started using Powerex AA for shorter work days. For long days I still prefer the Lithiums. I searched this forum and the MAHA website and I found that Powerex does not have memory effect. The last 4 days I noticed that if I charge an almost full AAs I only get 2.5 hours with my SMQV before I see a red light. I checked if the TX is setup to 250mW but it is not. All AAs are brand new from the same order coming straight from MAHA. Anybody experienced something similar? Also do you guys discharge them before charging?

Maybe a dumb question, but... I try to track down some weird behavior on my equipment: Can a radio interference (of unknown source) can completely silence a transmitter/receiver system during a few seconds ? Sound is off, then on, then off, etc... randomly. On several system, on different blocks, not the same day, not the same location, but symptoms are similar. Intermittent. No way to reproduce it back home. I even got to the point where I hook up everything with different sound source for each transmitter (to know the one is wrong) and record the output on a computer during 8 hours. Nada. I hope the collective brain will lighten me. Thanks. …

I'm looking to upgrade my system. I've had a lot of cross suggestions about these two rigs, but I wanted to just start a new topic about it to see what feedback I get from people.

Any advice here? Im going to be purchasing New professional wireless and always had the idea of buying lectrosonics. Now with he recording capabilities of the zaxcomm xmitters and zaxnet im a little confused and am not sure what to do. Im a sound devices guy, currently own a 744t and am planning to upgrade to 788t. If I go with zaxcomm wireless i would definitely get a nomad 8 instead of gettin the 788. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi, folks. I bought a K-tec boompole K152CCR from B&H yesterday and simply tested it with my Rode NTG-3. I've heard a lot K152CCR is one of the best boompoles.. but I hear too much noise from it. I came back home with the pole and first I stretched the pole and shook it a little bit. I could hear a lot of slapping noise from inside. I thought "Oh, this must be the internal cable. but maybe this is normal." Because I haven't had a coiled pole before. Then I plugged my mic and mixer, I could still hear a lot of noise through my headphone. Even I didn't move so quick or fast, I could hear all the cable slapping sound and handling noise. Also I felt carbon fiber boom…

HI all I'm contemplating the QIFB upgrade to my QRX100/TRX900 camera link, and I'm somewhat confused about a few of the functions and the required cables etc... To get the return audio into the QRX100 at the camera end, is that using the 5P XLR audio out (on ENG/EFP cameras) or the 3.5mm mini-jack to the audio input on the QRX? Is the return signal going to be a mono mix or can I select Ch 1 and/or Ch 2 separately? Can the QRX100 send back to the TRZ900 TC and return audio at the same time, or must I choose one or the other? At the TRX900 end, if I plug my cans into the audio/TC connector I can only get a mono mix of what my 788T is sending to the TRX…

I have two Zaxcom QRX100Q receivers in block 21. When doing a scan they are returning very different results. In the photo the receiver on top is running software version 1.09 and the other receiver is on version 2.0. The two receivers seem to return similar clear and not clear frequencies but the top receiver has much less strength of the various frequencies it is picking up whereas the bottom receiver picks up the same frequencies but with a stronger presence of those signals. I've swapped around the whip antennas in about every configuration possible, swapped power cables, and audio cables. I also hooked them up to the new PSC RF SMA splitter and to just th…

The topic says it all, really. Looking for a dealer with a webstore or a plain list of stuff on sale. Looking to hopefully buy lots of stuff from the same place, hush pads/sleeves, Rode vampire clips etc, without the hassle of e-mailing several distributors about several items. Thanks!
