re-posting for Chris McCallum - JW Just finished week 1 using my QRX hops and so happy with the result! Once I get a mono-ing cable from the IFB back to the 442 it will be complete! Working with a Chinese crew who are so impressed with the setup, they have even taken photos! Heading into the ceiling of the Sydney Opera House in the morning, be so nice not to be tethered to a camera Thanks Zaxcom!

I'm location and unfortunately don't have much cell or internet service where we are shooting. I just started using my powerstar mini today. After about 2 hours all outlets except the non-switchable outlet stopped working. The top power switch is still green and hasn't changed. it seems that when I leave the unit alone, (or as of now, something else that I can't recreate) makes the unit start working properly again. But for the life of me I can't figure out how to "trip it" again. I've contacted my seller, but thought if there is something I'm missing I'd really like to fix it tonight. I can't seem to locate the polyfuse without further taking it apart. thanks for an…

So this discusion of how much to charge for equipment is constantly debated here on the forum but I couldn't find this specifc take on it. A cameraguy I know tolled me that rental companies usually count that rental gear should pay for it itself in a 100 rental days*. Basicly, in a 100 rental days you should have your money back and then its a profit from there on. I know its hard to generlise, and take gear breaking or getting lost into account, but is this something you guys go by? Does 100 days seem a bit long maybe? *Just want to note that we were talking mainly about ENG-kits, not carts or studiobased set-ups. Would this be a good model to calculate wh…

In need of your valued advice! I am about to embark on a few weeks of doco actuality shooting with Police wearing their much loved but noisy leather jackets. So far I have been booming mostly to get some "air" between the squeaking groaning highly waxed leather and myself, however once we are in the field I will need to bug them. Has anyone found a sneaky way of beating the squeak? I will have to hide the lavs also for this project which makes the process just a bit more challenging. Any advice welcome Thanks Chris

An acquaintance of mine on another forum just posted a public service message about fake, Chinese-made imitation Sony MDR-7506 headphones out there. This video compares the packaging and material differences between the two: I've seen some phony Sony MDR earphones sold on eBay before, and actually bought a pair of MDR-90EX's for my iPod that sounded kind of like a paper cup covered in aluminum foil -- really piercing mids, no bass, just a really awful, tinny sound -- nothing like the real $100 MDR-90's. The seller immediately refunded my money and apologized, but be warned... there's some bad stuff out there. --Marc W.

There has been a little bit of talk about the Zaxcom tx's durability but not much that I remember. For people who have used them for ENG gigs, how have they been as far as durability and reliability? I'm used to Lectro Tx's being dragged on the ground, dropped, thrown in toolbelts with hammers and tools. I'm a little worried they won't hold up out in the reality TV world. Any experience from those who have?

Hi all I've started a job where I wanted to use wireless booms, and i'm using 2 x 416 mics and 2 Lectro HM Plug on TX's. I noticed instantly that one 416 had a faint but noticable whine and the other 416 had quite a noisy background. I swapped the mics over, changed frequencies and did all the usual checks to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious but to no avail. I've gone back to cabling the mics and all is fine. I'm hiring the plug ons so even got in another plug on to make sure it wasn't just a faulty unit. Interestingly I plugged in the HM to my Schoeps CMC5-U/MK4 preamp/capsule mic and was absolutely fine, whilst plugging in my Octava MK012 mic produ…

Hi, as I mentioned in another topic, I recently bought a Zaxcom ZFR100 recorder. It works great but uses a bit rare memory card format: Mini SD. Everybody is selling either Micro SD or the standard SD and most shops haven't even heard of MiniSD. Any ideas where I could buy a couple of 4GB cards? I only found this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Card+Type_Mini+SD&ci=1097&N=4270508873+4294955780 ZFR user manual lists acceptable memory cards and accordig to that list only Transcend 2GB and 4GB are approved. Not SanDisk for example. Strange... What I really would like to buy is a MicroSD to MiniSD adapter since I have tens…

I recently upgraded from UCR201's and UCR210D's to 411a's. Since then, I have been getting what sounds like a swishy, high frequency interference in my receivers...sometimes. It seems to mostly (or completely) go away when I put my hand near my Zaxcom Stereoline, 1st gen, Tx. I have never heard this in my 200 series (same Lectro blocks) I tried different frequencies, xlr cables, running the Zaxcom from internal batteries etc. The only thing that works is moving my Zax filtered antenna or touching its Lemo input connectors. I thought I figured it out when I realized the T-power was switched on, but it is still there. I can't seem to replicate it at home,…

Hey guys, I have been experiencing some small electrical current leakage into my cart. I've tracked it down to my Venue power supplies. With them disconnected the electric buzz I'm feeling through out all metal surfaces on my cart goes away. If I hold the shields of either supply (the portion that screws into the back of the power connector on the venue), I get the same electric buzz... even while they are disconnected from the venue. One note - I'm still setup on AC power (while I wait for the new Remote Audio Meon to be released) with a Furman AR-1215 in play. Is it the power supplies or is something else going on? Thanks, -Chris

Hi All I have a pretty extensive selection of shock mounts - my sound friends laugh when I tell them I've bought another shock mount. I've tried two variations of Rycotes lyre to use with 416 and now CS3e. The situation is I'm pretty happy with the lyre when i use it just with a foam windsock but when I go outside and need to put on a Koala windjammer or Rycote softie the extra weight load on the lyre mount makes it more noisy. So I've gone back to the Rycote doughnut. I haven't tried the K Tech mounts - yet - but at moment feeling they will suffer same issues as the lyre system. Your esteemed advise is sought.

Based upon my research it seems all sharkfins are created equal so would there be anything wrong with this pair from Audio Technica for $286.00 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/352354-REG/Audio_Technica_ATW_A49_ATW_A49_UHF_LPDA.html As compared to the PSC Version which are $311.00 for the pair? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/330710-REG/PSC_FPSC0044_UHF_Log_Periodic_Antenna.html Thanks

I was flipping channels just now and came across an episode on the US version of top gear, featuring an interview with tony hawk. I'll admit, I was watching on a small, standard definition TV, but it looked like he was wearing a lav that didn't have a wire connecting it to a transmitter. It was a pill shaped mic, clipped just above his sternum, on a plain black t shirt, with no button holes or anything to slip a wire through. I got up close to the screen and squinted as hard as I could, but I couldn't see a wire anywhere. can anyone tell me what this might have been?

Good afternoon to the high-octane profs at jwsound! When using a G2/G3 wireless system with a Wendt X3 or SD302 mixer, where should one start/adjust gain to achieve "unity": with the Senn receivers, or the mixer's pre-amp gain? Does it matter, as long as unity gain is achieved without over-modulation? Yours once agaiin in humility and gratitude, The Adept (Steven)

Well, I have built another cart. Seems to be all I do these days... none of these great carts spend any time out on a set working! This one based on a lightweight "mini" mobile cart that I believe Kevin Sorensen built. I used the same lightweight Harper Nylon handtruck as the basis and then also used the same plastic pegboard tile from Home Depot to fabricate the shelves. I wish I had had this cart on "We Bought A Zoo" because of all the rough terrain and moving around that took its toll on the main cart (and killed the follow cart as well). I think it turned out really good, it is very mobile, light and will hold just about the right amount of equipment for its intend…

Hi Folks, I am trying to find out if there is a way to lock the menu on the RX 900S like you can do on the TRX 900. Does anyone know of a way to do this? I am using them on a reality show in a pouch that the camera guys wear on their waists and they lean on the buttons and change the freq. It hasn't become a problem yet but has the potential for disaster. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks Rob P

The producer from a shoot I was recently on needs to know what the replacement cost is for a couple of the shelves on my PSC cart. If someone here knows, please let us know. I missed out on talking to a vendor this week, and hope to get an answer on a Saturday. Thanks, Dave Schaaf

This is a msg from John Falcone: "product will offically be launched at NAB in Las Vegas next month. Stay tuned" The prospect of having mkh8060 replace my big and bulky mkh60 sound like great idea. Then I can only carry a small and light rycote for my MKH8000s. Have anybody seen/used the mkh8060 yet? I know they were used on the super ball but I could not see them.

Had a google shoot on sunday. I decided to use the micbra. Wired the guy right under the chest. Sanken COS11 wrapped in a mole skin insight the micbra. Held the lav cable on the micbra so there is no pull. What pissed me off was every time the talent was walking, his underpits were rubbing on the sides of the micbra and I could hear it. I went to the talent and started scratching on the sides of the micbra. For some reason everything was getting in to the mic. I did not have time to investigate further cause I had to continue the shoot. I took the micbra off and just stuck the sanken cos11 to the talent's chest.

To the Deva/Fusion users.... I'm starting a cart based job in a few weeks. I have been on the fence about a Mix8 or Mix12 for my Fusion10. The major appeal of the Mix12 is the quick EQ access. RemoteAudio has provided an output solution, which was a previous push for the 12. The Mix8 costs less than half and is Nomad compatible. Is there anything else about the 12 that makes cart life a lot easier, and worth the big price gap? I only have 8 analog inputs, have not used the digital inputs, so the 8 sliders sound perfect. I also expect I will eventually pick up a Nomad, so the dual use is a bonus. The EQ is the one thing that would be exponentially easier to use wi…

Has anyone tried this iPower AA charger/tester? http://www.ipowerus.com/Products/GC60/GC60.htm I use the Maha 8 bank chargers, but this 4 bank one also tests capacity etc. There is not a whole lot of info, but if it works, that would be pretty useful. As much as I try to label the start date of batteries, in the heat of battle there is not a great way to ensure proper rotation etc.

Hi all I am looking at getting a new bag for my 788/CL8 and Lectro 411 combo. Currently I have the old style Petrol pegz2. It's great but with only two two receivers in it seems huge - with what seems like 4 or 5 inches hanging out the front. I've been considering the new Deca PS601; small bag. Does anyone use this configuration? Any other comments. Cheers all

Hi all, Wondering if any of you have real-world experience with and can comment on these DPA lav windscreens: http://www.dpamicrophones.com/en/products.aspx?c=Item&category=143&item=24214 http://www.dpamicrophones.com/en/products.aspx?c=Item&category=143&item=24224 Wondering if they work well for actual wind or if they are just suitable for breath pops and such. The only prefabricated lav windscreen I have ever found to be effective is the one for the Sanken COS-11 -- wondering how these hold up by comparison for the DPAs. Thanks if you can help!
