An ongoing topic over the winter, as I proceed toward downsizing the main cart. Drill down (ahem) into some detail in the video relative to accessorizing and punching holes in the shelves, including putting some handles on the nose end for going up stairs, and a small nose-end shelf as a phone charging station. Got an iPhone charging cable, but hope to get donations of Blackberry and a couple other phone charging cables (got any extras laying around?) to plug in to the external AC option I opted for: The AD255 and clip board fit just right: Um-hm. Tomorrow, the re-wire with advices from John Garrett in mind (thanks for the consult, Jo…

Hi folks, After a year of being wishy-washy, I finally swooned for Nissan's newest and most bizarre US offering, a 2012 Nissan NV 250 HD V6 High Roof van. It's the only one in Austin I think, as they don't yet deal them in town. Mine was used, the original owner put 2k miles on it and decided he couldn't afford it. I ended up getting a pretty good deal. I was just going to get a used Chevy Express or something, but after driving this beast I was hooked. I'm about to get a seat put behind the front seats and a bulkhead. The back half will be for my upright cart and a follow cart, along with mats, furnis, and extra stuff. A basketball team can stand up in …

I know they have been discussed before but site search isn't finding any results. What is the life span in a um400 or um250 if any of you are using them. I use I Powers 95 percent of the time but I am seeking a better solution then UltraLife or Energizer Lithium 9v for those times when I may need a disposable battery.

Hello all, This is my first post and I have been researching online to figure this out and have not been able to get a hold of various sound mixers I know to talk about it with them either, so I'm coming to you fine folks. I'm doing my first Sound-only gig for a student film starting tomorrow. I own a SD 442 mixer and they have rented a SD 744T recorder. However, they were not able to get a breakaway cable I mentioned to get (I said to get a dual-XLR male one end female on the other). I thought this is what I should be using, and please tell me if I'm wrong and there is a better, more efficient, or more accurate way to run the mixer to recorder. I'm new at thi…

Hello All, I was wondering who among you is using the Sound Devices CL-9. I am thinking of purchasing one and wanted to know what your experience has been in the field. Functionality, things you like, things you don't. If possible, let me know why you like it more than a field mixer and why or why not. I am torn as to whether or not to go with the CL-9 option (due to cost and keeping my full 8 track count) or if a dedicated mixer (Sonosax, used Cooper, Solice) would be a better way to go and why. One thing that seems like a hang up to me is the fact that you have to select a channel, then the EQ, then EQ it as opposed to just about any other mixer out th…

A provisional operating manual for the Nagra EMP preamp fell into my hands so I thought I would post what I learned. I haven’t yet played with the device itself but I could borrow an example if anyone is interested to know more. (I have worked with essentially the same preamps on a Nagra VI so I’m generally familiar with the source.) Briefly, it is a two-channel preamp, with built-in recording capability, designed as a stand-alone device or as a companion to the Nagra VI recorder. When used with the Nagra recorder, it draws its power from that source. As a stand-alone it can be powered either through a Hirose connector (accepting 9V- 13V) or from four internal AA ba…

Hey guys, I was talking to this production coordinator I'm doing 2nd unit with and he mentioned that the production wanted me to switch to zaxcom wireless. There reasoning is so they can run off and still have good tracks. I've used the whole zax system before (fusion, IFB, & wireless) and it worked for the most part. I wanted to know if I used my 744 instead of a zaxcom recorder would the zaxcom IFB still send the commands to record and stop recording to the zaxcom transceivers? Has anyone tried this? Keenan

Hi I've got the Zaxcom TRX900 with stereo adapter. I'm using the Remote Audio power cable to supply power to this unit from my BDS. Why does the connector not seat all the way down into the dc input on the SA? to where I can secure it with the collar screw. I have several of these type cables and all are the same way. This makes for a precarious situation. Is there another cable out there that would work better? Thanks Tom Backus

I know there have been a few threads about iPads and the like but whilst out doing abit of christmas shopping this afternoon i picked up an Arnova 10 G2 for £139. Its a really cheap and cheerful Android based tablet that im hoping to use on set for notes/call sheets/scripts etc. Maybe some emails or jw browsing if theres wifi. Just wondered if any of you guys were using tablets for anything other than 788 goodness? Im figuring i might even be able to use this when im working out of the bag...

Hello Friends, Has anyone been using this newish Tx from Comtek? It looks like an appealing addition to the bag-cart hybrid set-up I've been using. The size is reasonable and it's a great price for the features. But how to orient it in a bag, and will it play nicely with other gear in close proximity? Any experiences or witty remarks? Thanks, Travis Breitenbach

Anybody ever have issues with their Lectros 411 receiver not decoding audio signal, but after check-marking these troubleshoots I wrote below? And if so, is there any more troubleshoots that I can do before concluding my 411 needs repair. Thanks! transmitter and receiver: share the same block, are set at the same frequency, and are at the same compatibility mode (tx: 4 blinks, rx: 400 mode). while no audio signal registers on the receiver, the 411 does receive full RF signal from the transmitter at 1000uV. while there is no audio signal decoded at the receiver, there is audio present at the transmitter. The audio levels at the transmitter hovers around -20 dB. …

I just bought a used 442 that I want to use with my DR-680. Basically, I am planning on sending 4 direct outs from the 442 tracks to four of the DR-680 channels and then sending a mix from the main XLR outs on the 442 to the last two channels on the 680. I was wondering if anyone who is using this combination of gear could share how they are using it and also if they are recording on the DR-680 to stereo pairs or mono files. I would like to record to 4 mono tracks for the direct outs and a stereo pair for the mix, but I don't think that is possible on the DR-680. As for monitoring, are you sending the direct outs from the DR-680 back into the 442 and monitoring t…

I recently purchased a Remote Audio BDSUSB cable that allows one to charge apple devices from a BDS box. It works as planned with my iphone 4 but does not work with my ipad 2. The ipad knows something has been plugged into it yet it displays a not charging icon. Anyone using this setup to charge an ipad 2 successfully ? al

Hello Everyone, Just got back from getting Axient Certified at Shure out in the Chicago area. Was talking to some of there people about the uses for the system and was curious what people thought of it as a cart system or as a tool for some of the more studio driven reality tv shows. Also if anyone has any questions about it I'm more then happy to answer.

Hey, Just a nice picture of a collection of short microphones. Been doing some comparison's lately on cardioids. The DPA is really nice IMO. It competes with the Schoeps. Sennheiser you need the pad/filter in there but also very nice. Thoughts on short mics? mounting options? windscreen protections? I'm not asking for anything specific - just your experiences.

I'm working on the finishing touches on a new cart, and came across an issue I didn't think about - how wide it is at the axle. Mine is currently coming in at 28.5 inches....which seems like a lot. I can at least get it out of my front door - but how many other doors it can get thru has me concerned... I think, with some work, I can shave off at least an inch, maybe 1.5 inches - more than that would involve finding some different wheels or a different mounting system (not something I really want to do) Just thought I'd throw it out there and see what numbers some of you might be coming in at.

Hi all, So I've just got my new qrx100/trx900 camera hops. I'm using the qrx to send timecode from an xd xam to remote roll the recorder on my SD 552. I can't seem to find anywhere in the qrx menu system to set the ifb freq, and I couldn't find it in the manual (which is badly written and very uninformative! there's a very poor explanation of the tx control features.) there are also a few menus in the manual that aren't available on the actual unit. Any help is appreciated!

What kind of power strip (using the term loosely) are you using on your carts? I don't have a particularly special one. My setup is: wall or geni power -> power strip -> cart power distro box -> expensive gear I have my AA and 9volt battery chargers in the power strip as well. Should I have a specific power strip? By that, should I have one with a high protection threshold, or noise filtering abilities? I will probably be upgrading the cart power next year (probably something from Remote Audio or PSC). I never noticed any kind of line noise that was because of my AC power. Have I just been lucky? I know that no power strips are 100% effective…

I own 5 Sanken COS-11 lav mics of various vintages and was wondering if anyone knows what ranges of serial numbers include the various versions: s, x, and d? It would be nice to know what version I'm really getting when buying used, or even new! I found no information about it on Sanken's web site. In case there is no clear answer, I'm going to share all but the last two digits of my serial numbers and encourage others to do the same. Perhaps we can reveal the break point in serial numbers for the different versions. 909XX - black COS-11s 940XX - black COS-11s 982XX - black COS-11s 1057XX - black COS-11x 1136XX - white COS-11d The only way I know what …

I know there is no way to do it, but I'm thinking it would be cool if there's was a way to use the set up menu to make the "tape out / mix out" jack be a direct out for channel 3. Why? I would like to be able to do 3 isos, but not having to wear my 442 all day long (lavs on 1+2 and boom on 3). Perhaps in a future firmware update... yeah I know, dream on
