I just got a call from a mixer I rented some equipment to (Thankfully not my 302) and I wanted to ask if this can happen: He is mixing a low budget feature and is using a Y Cable to split the output of the 302 to send the signal to a Fostex Fr-2 and a HD Camera of some type( I told him this is a bad idea but they did it anyways). Last week he called me and said the 302 mixer was hot to the touch and acting funny so I told him to send it in for repair. According to him the Fr-2 and Camera both had Phantom power on and fried his 302 mixer because phantom power was being sent into the mixer through the output. I told him I wasn't sure this was the issue I would just like t…

I have for many years been using a Car Com designed by David Ronne. It enables the director to speak to the actors within a towed car via a headset microphone with a push to talk switch. Does anyone know of any other systems that would be similar? Thanks for any input. Regards, Tommy

" At IBC2007, Sennheiser featured its new EM 3732 twin wireless receiver with 90MHz switching bandwidth. Features include high-quality audio performance, numerous connection options, scanning function and transmitter synchronization via infrared interface. The receiver has six user-selectable fixed frequency banks and one user bank with up to 60 channels that can be programmed in increments of 5kHz. The EM 3732 automatically searches for free frequencies within frequency banks. Using the EM 3732’s infrared interface allows the device to program the SKM 5200, SK 5212 and SKP 3000 transmitters with receiver data in minimum time. The level of the receiver's a…

A while back an issue was brought up on this group and on “rampsâ€ by someone having peak distortion problems (severe crackling during dialog peaks) occurring somewhere between their Sound Devices SD-442 mixer’s balanced TA-3 outputs and their Zaxcom TRX-900 transmitter’s stereo input adapter. The same issue was reported (and confirmed) when using the unbalanced TA-3 outputs of the Cooper CS-104. The symptoms were: There was no problem when using a transformer-balanced or active-balanced line level output when using a normal, shielded pair, straight through cable. Testing with the SD-442 transformer balanced outputs and the SD-302 active balanced outputs conf…

Hi Folks first of all thanks for all the info and help given to me by a lot of you over the past year. My question? Is the Audio Developments AD-146 Mixer, that I am told is 12 years old to obsolete for todays work environment? I have have been having jobs that suddenly have a need for more than the 4 inputs on my SD442. I would also like to have some eq control. Is under 4k a fair price for this mixer and finally , service in the USA? I currently have a bag setup and most of the jobs turn out to be something where I can sit at a cart not run and gun. I am thinking I could output from this mixer to my 442 thus keeping the 2 return snakes I already have and not having to p…

A guy in France came to me very recently and wanted the below item for his 744T, I assume he's a run and gun documentary type sound recordists. I thought it was a blinding obvious combination of parts... http://www.bluecowcables.com/product.php?id_product=49, It's regulated to 12v, 2A thermal shutdown. Thanks, John, www.bluecowcables.com - or if your French (or in Quebec), http://fr.bluecowcables.com (or Polish - PL., Dutch - NL., etc - DE., RU., ES.)

Dear All, Nothing like a challenge… I probably would have said "NO" to this project unless I had the opportunity to work along with Wayne Brissette and learn something. This was a TV Pilot shooting "That Video Stuff"... That stuff" is not at the top of my operational knowledge… "Wayne's brain and work ethic were stretched to the max on this three camera, double system, eight wireless, two man crew, HD video shoot, With audio playback! We opted to send a wireless feed to the cameras as a guide track using the Zaxcom Stereo Adaptor with the Zaxcom 900's from the Deva V and a Denecke Loc box for frame accurate TC jamming.. It all added up to a problem f…

Hi all, hope this is the correct forum for the post. I have an older MXP 290, works very well.....except the CH R fader is starting to act up on me. I don't really use the aux 1 & 2 outs, so could I just swap out the faders or is there a better solution. Don't think I could get parts for this old machine. I have not pulled of the cover yet. Thanks Tom

I have found one of these systems for sale. My question to you folks is this something you could use on a cart ? The listing says it can work on DC. Since I don't have a cart I am asking about its being something feasable to use. Thanks for any input. Thanks Tom

Hi All, I need some help with the outputs on my 552 please I had a cable built to feed from the tape out on the 552 ( TA3M ) to a Comtek 1/8 mini stereo plug with a mono output. This cable works fine no problems with the tape out. Now I would like to feed a 2nd Comtek with a feed for a boom op. I was thinking of using a direct out. So I tried the TAM3 L and R outputs and a direct output with the same cable It only works when I insert the cable half way and then cuts out when the connector locks into the 552 Looking at the connector pin assignments I see the only difference in tape out and L and R outputs is pin 3= float ( no connect ) Is th…

Yesterday, after hours of nearly non-stop recording (HD) on my 744T, the headphone disc monitoring was suddenly backwards. Actually, backwards, as if it were tape being played in reverse. Direct headphone monitoring was normal but in A,Bm mode everything was crazy. I checked playback and everything was cool. It didn't happen on the next take but what possibly could make the audio be backwards. Perplexed, Bruce

Hey all, I have looked both here and online and can't find anything... I was reading the latest 'Sound & Picture', having a look at the article about Stuart Wilson, the mixer of 'War Horse', an excellent read. Anyway, I noticed his antennas, shark fin type, but with just the actual poles. I read he uses audio LTD wireless, but didn't find any audio LTD antennas, so I'm just curious what his antennas are, as I've never seen them before. Here's a link to the periodicle, which is excellent. Thanks! J

It has taken me a while to realize that my iPhone is going to be the defacto point of origin for location guest IFB going forwards. (our days of RJ-11/14 related paraphernalia seem to be over….. not seeing much ‘bakelite’ product out their either!!) I am including photos of the so-called ‘emergency IFB’ cable distributed by Audio Implements. (I make sure that every crew assigned to live shots has this within quick reach, so we can break off a faulty hard-wired IFB setup, and move the guest/correspondent earpiece assembly to their mobile phone). If I understand correctly, in this Audio Implements cable, L/R channels are summed, in order to bring the…

So in my search for the ultimate sounding, inexpensive earbuds, I discovered something called "burning in" for new headphones. I feel foolish for never having heard of this practice. Anyone here do this?

Finished a pilot recently (didn't get picked up...) that required two days of shooting car2car (how netspeak!), with one scene car2car2car, where the director (sitting in the rear of the rear car, with camera operators in every car - hiding)) wanted to be able to shoot whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted, no room whatsoever in any of the cars for sound, with all of the chase vehicles being sedans with tinted windows - at high speeds with stunt drivers in all of the surrounding cars. A separate meeting for these scenes was held after the Production Meeting where the DP described his vision, and when the group turned to me and asked how in the world was I going to ge…

Hi I have some questions regarding IFB systems. I would like to know how to get a cleaner monitoring "live" and "playback" source from a VT system. Particularly the Raptor recorders used in some VT carts. I always seem to get the a constant inteference when plugging in a comtek transmitter. The sound itself is fine other than the the noise of what I think is the drives from the Raptors spinning on standby or pause mode. is there any way of eliminating the noise floor, could it be the case of balance VS unbalnced. Are there other IFB systems to look at and other setups that I can try ? GReg

Hello. The last decade has seen the rise of "compact" (=shorter) shotgun microphones on the professional market: less than 18cm/7inch length in size condenser mikes that are supposed to match the directionality/pickup pattern of "older" much longer microphones: Schoeps MiniCMIT, Sennheiser 8060, Sanken CS-M1, etc... As we all know the laws of acoustic at the basis of the shotgun microphones technology have not changed and phase cancellation of off-axis frequencies is still in use for these "new" mikes. (The only real new technology for an improved directionality that I know of is the Schoeps SuperCMIT digital mike but that does not enter this discussion as …

Hello JWsound and thanks in advance: Two of my Cooper 104 gain pots, channels 1 & 2, make crackling noise when turned. It's been a while since I used them. I turned them rapidly up and down, since I was once told that moving stuff can dislodge noise-making particles, but they crackle the same. I tried air canning them from outside the mixer while turning them, then I popped off the top panel and air canned around in there. Dust flew out. But I still hear the crackle! I know at this point there must be a way to clean the pot and re-lube it right? It can't be that hard of an operation, I don't want to have to send the mixer out y'know? Of course I'd much …
