Not a post about a specific piece of gear, but while I was scrolling through Facebook today I saw a post where someone had their house broken into and much for their gear stolen, including their only shotgun mic. I scrolled through the comments and saw that Andrew from Deity (I think he’s on here) sent him one of their mics free of charge. I thought that was an incredibly kind thing to do and it makes me happy to see manufacturers support our community. Big ups to Deity!

I recently had the opportunity to look over the new Nagra VI. It's a six-channel hard drive recorder with four mike preamps and a Compact Flash slot. I find it a nice bridge between the small recorders (Sound Devices, Sonosax) and the larger, generally more expensive, machines like the Deva and Cantar. It is possible to get two hands on the controls and accomplish considerable work directly on the recorder without resorting to a companion mixer. But the capabilities are a bit less than what's available on some of the more expensive recorders. Still, a good addition to the mix or recorders presently available. Nagra quality, six tracks, well equipped at well under $8000. …

Hi all, I’ve just ordered an MKH30 to accompany my MKH50 for M/S recording. I will have a Rycote Cyclone for wind protection. I plan on recording nature sounds for ambient music projects and sound design. I also want to use the MKH50 for small interview projects. Much of this will be locally in Northern California, but I also intend to do some recording in India later this year, so portability could be nice. To these ends, I’m wondering what might be a good choice of stand or boom pole. Ideally, something that fits both purposes would be nice. Perhaps I will need two separate items, as I will probably just boom with just the MKH50 for interviews and any narrativ…

Hi, The Lectrosonics SR9VBP battery pack seems like a clever backup system for use with devices that use SONY L series 7.2vDC batteries. Does it just place two 9vDC batteries in parallel for or is there some sort of regulation? Thank you.

Hello everyone, I am really in need of your help. Does anyone own a Schoeps B1D windscreen and live locally in Los Angeles? I would like to test one of these on an MK41 in a podium speech setting to see how well it handles close plosives. Is anyone willing to let me test it either at my studio (in Los Feliz) or at yours? I'd happily treat you to a coffee afterwards if you'd like. Please let me know!! Any dealer near Los Angeles is fresh out of stock and I would have to order one to be able to test - but I'd like to test before I ordered... Thanks very much!!! Sincerely, Ryan

Anyone had experience with disassembling ( and reassembling ) the joint on the KTek articulated boom? I'm keen on replacing the cable myself.

MTB40S or P for boom work? I have been demoing the B40s cube for two weeks on a movie and all is well until last night. It seems the battery tabs have recessed/bent back a bit and it turns off intermittently. Can I just pull the tab back a bit? The door seems fine. Any suggestions on power settings, that seems to affect the run times a lot. I am getting about 5 hours on a set of Energizer Lithium's.

…has anybody seen this? http://www.portablepower.net/collections/products/products/freedom-1-portable-110v-ac-power-solution They're selling it now, for $750, including an additional power module (which presumably costs extra.) Sounds intriguing for cart use, if you're rigged for AC, though I know a few colleagues who prefer DC across the board. Opinions? Feedback? TIA, BK

I have a mic in channel one of the board and see levels. I am using the slot card on the back of the board, MY16-AE, and Pro-Sound in NY made me a D sub 25 pin connector to the rear of the 788. All inputs on the 788 are set to digital. The word clock out of the board is going into the 788 although I haven't done anything on the board menu for that. And both devices are in 48k. I went through with the yamaha tech to make sure I was out out puuting out of the MY16. He said it is normalized through Bus1. The only fader I have up is channel 1. According to the yamaha tech I should be getting a signal into the 788. Does anyone have any ideas? Chris

Hey everyone! I am new to the game, so forgive me if this seems obvious. Is the 552 unpractical and dated as a stand-alone mixer/recorder if I can get my hands on one for $600? and I am deliberating over whether or not the sd552 would make sense or if I should get the the mixpre 6 ii or the zoom f8n pro. Which one will have a better shelf life for expansion as a student such as myself. On a separate note. I have acquired a ktek Avalon graphite traveler that is cabled with a 3pin xlr, however, I have a sanken css-5 shotgun mic that runs a 5pin. I was thinking about picking up the Rycote cyclone and windjammer, but figured I would ask you all what solu…

Not totally a new topic (pictures posted here sometime back) but I am wondering when any of the US companies are going to get this windscreen in stock. I did see the Cinela mount first in France (at DCAudio Visuel) but it hasn't had much penetration here in the US. The Zephyx windscreen is something I think I would really like. Posted below is a description of its benefits (and it fits right into most all of the design considerations that Don Coufal has used in the windscreens he has built in the past): from DVAudio Visuel website "The new ZEPHYX windscreen has several new benefits: - Wind protection is increased thanks to the ovoid shape and to better capsule p…

Hey guys,I am in the market for some wireless handheld microphones for AV hire use. Mostly corporate gigs at smaller venues and no more than (4) mics at a time. I've been doing some research and see a lot of negative comments from the pro community regarding Shure BLX. I don't know much about RF and was wondering if any of you all could help me understand if/why they are a poor option. Thanks!

Hi all, am heading to Bolivia and Chile soon and was wondering if anyone had any location experience with radio mics in these areas. I was hoping to be able to use my Audio Ltd Ch69 (854.900-861.750mhz) but was worried that mobile phone usage may be in this range and wondered what you might recommend. I will be in both built up (La Paz) and jungle/andes areas. Many Thanks, Rob.

Hey guys! I just got a Sony PCM-D50 for doing some gorilla sound collection, which means that I'll be exposing it to the elements. I already have a Rycote and a lyre suspension for it but I know that wind noise can be introduced through the TRS/Optical ports as well. Does anyone know of a place that sells rubber inserts for different audio connectors to safely block up these holes?

is there a way to prevent the large PA making that loud "Plock" when I switch on / off my (signal feeding) mixer? Sometimes it gets hectic on set and I forget to warn the FOH ... Any gear available to put in line with my signal?

I just saw the ZMT4-X announcement with dual microdot connectors. Think this is to make room for dual connectors, or is anyone expecting Zax to go with microdot on other transmitters going forward? I believe I would prefer a microdot to those lovely but difficult to solder 00 Lemos. Can my ZMT4 TXs be retrofitted? Sean

Hey everyone, I need some advice on what setting to use on my lockit boxes when shooting with a Varicam, at 60fps/59.94hz that's all the info I have at the moment, do I need to ask production anything else? I've had the Lockits for a few years, but never worked with a Varicam before, everything but a varicam it seems! The Lockit model number is ACL202CT Thanks in advance for any help. Jon

Hey all! I know this may be a little less than what everyone normally works with... but I recently rented out my fostex fr2le unit (everything find on departure) and when it came back, there was only one channel showing on the unit (channel 1 or L). I was thinking it was an arming issue, since I never saw it before, but couldnt find anything regarding track arming, etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Justin

I just purchased a new Sennheiser MKH 416. When I pull the mic out of the windscreen, the front cap comes off. Is there a reason the cap is even removable? Would I ever need to access anything behind the cap? Is my microphone defective?
