Ringo. aka Jules Strausser, or Ringo de Van Nuys... RIP.... One of the great characters in the sound community and a legendary boom man and fun loving individual has passed on. Sad day indeed, but any day with Ringo was sunny. I am sure the party has started on the distant shore. CrewC

I would like to try and make the Gallery of Carts that I have up, thanks in great part to Bob Marts who supplied many of the images, a little more useful. I am going to try and put an identifying name on the cart images that are named things like DC_3456 etc., so that it is a little bit more personal (and possibly help others who might wish track down the owner/designer/builder of the carts pictured). So, if any of you want to look at the gallery and identify your cart, I will re-name the images as best I can. You should email me the name that appears below the image on the Gallery and then tell me who you are. I will also try and put cart images up whenever they are p…

This could be fun. If you would like a FREE ad for the sound on a film you did this year, have your production publicity person contact me asap. I thought it would be fun to honor a few of the JWSound mixers with a free ad that would appear in our next issue. It would say something like is done in the trade ads like: "FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION FOR BEST SOUND ON A MOTION PICTURE" Production Sound Mixer: Joe Smith Post Production Sound Mixer: Manny, Moe and Jack I have the space for 2 or 3 or 4 of those ads for Camera, Sound and Editorial, so why not have some fun putting up your show. If there are too many to chose from, I will have to figure out some criter…

Recent article in Broadcast Engineering. http://broadcastengineering.com/news/ctia-takes-aim-spectrum-1119/ Of particular note: One such block of frequencies is the 470MHz to 698MHz band used by TV broadcasters, the filing said. This so-called “beachfront property, which is highly desirable because of its propagation characteristics, “is ideally suited to the provision of mobile broadband services, the CTIA filing said.

I have had to disable any and all EMAIL notification functions for this forum in an effort to solve what we believe is a spam/server problem of some sort. Personal Messages should be unaffected so you can continue to use those. I hope none of our members are inconvenienced by this --- I really don't know how many people have set their profiles up to have email notifications sent out. Once we solve this problem I will reactivate this feature. Thank you for your understanding. Best regards, Jeff Wexler

Well will this be part of a new wave of L.A. based production? Nikki Finke has this scoop: Disney/ABC To Build Huge Production Facility & Double Soundstage Space in LA County Disney-ABC TV today filed paperwork seeking approval from Los Angeles County for a huge 56-acre production facility on property it has long owned in the Santa Clarita Valley. It would include a dozen soundstages, almost doubling the number it has now in LA County. Predictions are for a $533 million economic boost to the region and about 2,854 new full- and part-time jobs. It'll be called the Disney/ABC Studios at the Ranch, located on the western edge of Disney's 890-acre Golden Oak Ranch. (…

NBC Axes 'Trauma' Network cancels struggling medical series By STUART LEVINE, Daily Variety NBC has lost a patient in "Trauma." Medical series has been cancelled by the Peacock and production will be halted after its 13-episode order has been completed. Despite not giving it a back-season order, network has no intention of pulling the show off its Monday lineup and will continue to air episodes until the run is complete. Universal Media Studios show from Peter Berg's Film 44 shingle was supposedly the most expensive show on the Peacock's fall lineup. The network was put in a tough spot earlier in the year when "Parenthood" had to be pushed back to 2010 when co…

from Jon Tatooles post on r.a.m.p.s.: "It is with excitement and reflection that I put the very last two 442 mixers ever produced into our 'museum' (a shelf in an equipment cabinet). They join the first product Sound Devices ever produced, an MP-1 (1999). The 442 is now discontinued, but will continue to thrive with the many units that are in regular use all over the world." What a treat to see today that Bob Eber has joined our Discussion Group. I have been a big fan for many years, but it has been many years since I have even spoken to Bob. I hope he is doing well and doing whatever work he wants to do --- Bob has been a cameraman, a soundman, has had a very full career and will be a real asset to this group. Best regards, Jeff Wexler

In case you have been procrastinating like the FCC and have 700MHz gear eligible for a trade-in rebate time is running out to cash in. Audio Technica and Electro-Voice trade-in programs have expired. Sennheiser - must purchase by December 1st and send 700MHz gear/proof of purchase UPC by December 15th. Shure - must purchase by December 31st and send 700MHz gear/proof of purchase UPC by January 31, 2010. The FCC, in their infinite wisdom, has yet to move on the proposed order and rule making to set a date certain for Part 74 devices to vacate 698-806MHz. Verizon, on the other hand, has been sending form letters to venues telling them they have interfered with s…

In the latest edition of TV Technology, Hans Laetz criticizes the local Los Angeles television channels for their lack of warning and news coverage of the disastrous Station Fire. We're on Our Own in L.A. "Deborah McAdams writes in TV Technology that the recent Station Fire narrowly missed burning Los Angeles TV towers, and potentially 1.7 million people would have been without access to emergency information. This is not correct. Every one of the 5.7 million TV households in Los Angeles were completely without access to emergency information via TV during that fire, even though the equipment was largely working. The simple fact is, that had the transmitters on top …

This just appeared in Daily Variety and I thought it was a form of "Gallows" humor. I copied the entire piece: World's Greatest Film Locations Pros pick best places for filmmaking Industry insiders choose world's greatest locations By IAIN BLAIR Variety recently conducted an online poll among several hundred location managers, unit production managers, cinematographers, directors and assistant directors asking them to rate their favorite locations according to visual appeal, incentives, film-office support, production resources, and ability to substitute for another location. The top five North American locations and the top five international locations, ranked h…

I was lucky enough to see this new Feature Documentary the other day. It's being screened as part of the London film Festival. It's a great watch, and I recommend anyone who reads this site to watch it if they can. A fascinating story of a real modern day genius, who is an inventor ,engineer, musician, scientist oddball. A man who's life revolves around sound, and who really enjoys himself. They're the kind of guys who warrant having a documentary made about them I think! You can see some of his pieces of art/instruments, for instance the Seistron(?), that converts seismic activity from around the world into midi, that then plays different rhythms on a massive structure…
