A week or so ago I updated the core software that runs this site --- everything went smoothly, there have been quite a few changes "under the hood" as they say, performance improvements and stability. Like so many other updates, there were consequences unforeseen --- the long running theme and customizations got corrupted and there were some incompatibilities. What you have been seeing the last few days is the result of cobbling together a theme that works while I have been doing a total redesign of the site. Quite soon I will be changing everyone over to the new theme. Anyone experiencing any difficulties, please let me know using the Contact Us form, a Private Messa…

So sad to read the news today that Chad Boseman has died. He was a wonderful person, a really good actor and such a dedicated hard worker. I did "42", the Jackie Robinson movie with him, he was in just about every scene and every day working with him was a pleasure.

Got an email from the UPM stating that they are starting some construction this month, and are working to start shooting n August. WHAAAAAAAT?!!! I always maintained that schools would be open before network shows started up again. But they’re not... Seems overly hopeful to me. I’ve heard about reality starting back up in my town, but August seems just crazy. With virus numbers going up due to a Deranged Cheeto who’s only “leadership” is calling for a civil war and all... So sad to hear of the passing of Alan Parker. One of the greatest directors, though I never got the chance to work with him, his films and his filmmaking inspired me greatly, helped sustain my love of the craft of filmmaking.

What are your thoughts on these proposals? Personally, I'm not a fan of "French Hours" because I feel it gets abused and all departments end up with different length meal-breaks. But I sure as heck wish a 40hr work week was a living wage for all crew members and I'm sure we all have had stress due to lack of at-home time with family, friends, and significant others. https://www.currentaffairs.org/2020/07/its-time-for-a-new-labor-movement-in-the-performing-arts?fbclid=IwAR0HliXHnBYwAvAVLdnx-j2Zpb0ryCQpdoA75Q_lKaJnPzVNiK85GJcsV3M

I worked with Kelly Preston on "Jerry Maguire" --- she was great to work with, totally professional, hard working and fun! I really miss her, died way too young.

In the spirit of trying to lighten the mood, with the current state of things, here's a couple videos that were posted in the LA Sound Mixers FB group:

I was asked to do sound on a 10-day student film (feature length) and the director seemed like he had all his ducks in a row in regards to scheduling and safety in these times. In addition to everyone being required to be tested for COVID before production began (which requires 5 days for results in this area) they had a 2 page policy document that claimed crew would be required to wear a mask 100% of the time and actors would wear a mask when not in a scene. Great! Of course I get on set in a very confined space and compliance is closer to 50% with frequent offenders being the director and unit production manager who are responsible for compliance. I brought it up …

I've decided to make two of my apps: Open Callsheet and Timecard Buddy completely free to use until December. Both of them are meant to cut down on paper use, so maybe they'll play a small part in keeping people safe. opencallsheet.com timecardbuddy.com Video demonstrations: OpenCS - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3NosM6ZO3I TCBuddy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxkxMsfPSAU (My apologies for excluding those outside of the US. These apps are designed specifically for film production members in the US and Canada)

I’ve been putting this post off for a few weeks as I knew how sad it would make me, but I am sorry to announce the passing of fellow JWSOUND member John Bennet (jgbsound). John was a very talented production mixer and post mixer who loved sound with every fiber of his being. I had the pleasure of calling him a colleague, and more importantly, a friend. I will miss his contributions to this site and to my life as he made both better. Godspeed.

Shoots of some scale have started up again in the SF area, most of what I've heard about are large corporate type gigs with commercial style crews and resources (not entertainment productions). I have not been one yet, so I'd love to get some bulletins from the front, from folks who are back doing similar scale shoots to what they were doing before the shutfdwn. How is it going--what is working, what is not working? What is the fear level on the job? How cavalier are people being about all the precautions?

I've spent part of the day exploring Jeff's new site with varying results revealing me to be the weak link. It is frustrating to be shot down, I got to the Article button and then it slipped away. To quote Jimmy Buffet "it was so simple it plum evaded me." While I was doing this I was on a Tony Joe White binge, preferring the B&W TV bit where he lip sycs because to me that version is the real deal, baked in my brain in 1969. He is primarily known as a songwriter and I find I love his versions warts and all. The feel just drips off of it. I may have posted some of these before and I'll [probably post it again. TJ White is ground zero for Swamp …

I have started and built up a new community site, not really JWSOUNDGROUP 2.0 because I have no intention to end this site, but wanted to see if a new site could be of interest to our members. It is not the typical and traditional forum discussion style site, more like Facebook and other social media sites. It is less structured, posts can be quickly made and do not require figuring out which section to post in (but can be tagged with a Topic). I am inviting anyone and everyone here to try it out --- unfortunately, there is no easy way to transfer your membership and login from here to the new site. Use the link below to Request to Join. Please use your real…

It's been a while since I have posted. With the shutdown and loss of work, I have put my head into the sand, my family, and my beer. I hope that everyone is doing ok and just wanted to send some good vibes out there. Hope no one is truly destitute and that your families are safe. Wishing everyone a good weekend.

LA Times article reports: ”Filming could start in some counties meeting a specific set of criteria as soon as Monday, Newsom said. However, Los Angeles is likely to be “a few weeks behind,” given the level of deaths from the COVID-19 pandemic.” Link to the full article: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2020-05-20/california-is-preparing-to-restart-filming-protocols-due-next-week

A-wop-bom-a-loo-mop-a-lomp-bom-bom. Little Richard wrote the greatest (maybe the first) rock & roll lyric to describe a drum fill he wanted. Or – depends when you asked him – it was how he talked back to his boss as a dishwasher at the Macon Greyhound station. Hearing a hit in the frustrated number Richard pounded out during a break in an unproductive recording session, producer Bumps Blackwell hired songwriter Dorothy LaBostrie to temper the original lyrics' lip-smacking celebration of "good booty" and helpful butt-sex instructions ("If it don't fit, don't force it/You can grease it, make it easy"). "Tutti-Frutti" may have been modified from "explicit" to "suggestive…

Another demo against the coronarules. https://www.bz-berlin.de/berlin/mitte/ard-kamerateam-bei-illegaler-demo-vor-reichstag-attackiert Someone rushed out to kick the sound technician, but instead hit the boompole which then hit the cameraman in the head. No big injuries and the police arrested the person quickly.

After the other incident that we just learned about, here is unfortunately a second one. This time the police punched a sound technician in the face, who lost three teeth and got a fracture. https://www.bz-berlin.de/berlin/friedrichshain-kreuzberg/journalistin-ins-gesicht-geschlagen-ermittlungen-gegen-polizisten With her, was also six colleagues that apart from being eye witnesses also filmed. She will try to press charges.

They were on their way to their vehicles after shooting for "heute show" which is a highly popular satirical programme in Germany. It's presented weekly on public German broadcaster ZDF. Five members of the crew are in hospital. Let's hope they will get well soon. Background of the attack is unclear, perhaps from far right or from far left or violent opponents of corona restrictions. Six suspects were arrested by the police. This could be us. Let's hope the best for them. What a shame. This AM the CA EDD site for "Pandemic Unemployment Assistance", ie unemployment insurance for people who were mostly paid via form 1099 until Jan 1 of this year, went live. If you had a mix of probably a handful of W2-days and a basket of 1099-days you are hosed. The EDD requires you to apply for and take the benefit payments off your handful of W2s if you have any at all, and not your 1099s. In that most of us were never given a choice about which method of payment would be used on a given job, this is fair....how? When you exhaust what benes you can get from your W2s supposedly you will be able to apply for PUA benes, depending on what else happens between now and …

Filed under "restoring a friend's old Korean War era Navy Band recitals." According to the American Chemical Society, reel to reel tape is prone to degradation, which has been a topic of active research for many years. It's well known that applying heat can often reverse the damage sufficiently to enable playback, usually by baking the tapes in an oven. Now scientists at the US Library of Congress have determined precisely why this method seems to work, presenting their findings earlier this month on the American Chemical Society's SciMeetings online platform. The primary culprit for the degradation is known as "sticky shed syndrome," in which the binders used in a magne…

I am a production mixer and I teach. I am literally in a conversation at this moment about pulling the plug on all student production. I'd like your thoughts about this. (I am in favor of shutting down).
