I am posting full text of Macintouch's recap of what was announced today at the Apple event. Most significant for us I feel is that the lower priced MacBook (non-pro) will be much less useful in a professional environment because it lacks ANY Firewire port and no Express Card slot (so you cannot even add it externally). I am very pleased with all the things they have done otherwise and appreciate the insight into radically new manufacturing processes. from Macintouch: Apple Steve Jobs and his team presented new laptop products today at a typical Apple event for its invited members of the news media. Jobs and designer Jony Ive confirmed a new manufacturing process…

latest word from AP: SAG leader calls strike talk 'a distraction' 3 hours ago LOS ANGELES (AP) — The leader of the Screen Actors Guild said Sunday the union remains committed to negotiating a new deal with Hollywood producers as contract expiration looms and is not calling for a strike. Anxiety has been growing in Hollywood that actors might walk off the job or that studios could lock out performers on the heels of the Writers Guild of America strike that devastated production from November through February. The SAG contract runs out at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. "We have taken no steps to initiate a strike authorization vote by the members of Screen Actors Guild…

I'd take this with a grain of salt, but Variety reports: SAG to send offer to its members By DAVE MCNARY Despite their public disdain for the idea, SAG's leaders may agree to the majors' request to send out their final offer to the 120,000 guild members at the end of July. Such a move could resolve Hollywood's current stalemate by the middle of August, should a majority of the thesps voting endorse the deal. The Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers had no comment Monday. But guild insiders have acknowledged that it has few other options left in the face of the congloms' refusal to change terms contained in the two-w…

I have put up a new Group for Deva users, owners, those thinking of getting a Deva, those who already own and use other recorders... basically, everyone involved in the world of digital file-based recording begun by Zaxcom with the original Deva I. We have come a long way now with many other recorders out there, virtually all recordings made now in our industry are file based. The old Deva II Group (even the name is old) has its purpose and has served us well as a closed group with only those who actually own a Deva participating. Glenn Sanders and Zaxcom have very real reasons for keeping that group for owners only and as one of the very first people to be part of that …

Very sad news that Paul Newman has died. from Washington Post: By Adam Bernstein Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, September 27, 2008; 11:07 AM Paul Newman, 83, the actor and sex symbol who surged to stardom by playing loners as well as criminal and moral outlaws -- anything to downplay his astonishing looks -- died of cancer Friday at his farmhouse near Westport, Conn. Newman was an Academy Award-winning actor and acclaimed director, and he used his fame to propel his political activism, race car driving and philanthropy. He donated all the profits from his Newman's Own food company -- more than $150 million -- to charities and social welfare organizati…

Steve Jobs obituary accidentally published online An obituary for Apple CEO Steve Jobs was recently published accidentally through Bloomberg's financial newswire, reports say. The article, though several pages long, is incomplete, with gaps for Jobs' age and means of death. It also suggests a number of important people to interview for quotes, including Steve Wozniak, the other founder of Apple; Heidi Roizen, an ex-girlfriend of Jobs; and Jon Rubinstein, former head of Apple's iPod division. The obituary was quickly retracted, but not before a copy began to circulate online. Jobs' battles with pancreatic cancer -- and speculation over his current health -- have bo…

My son just told me about a company that is offering web design services (totally web based) and web hosting for websites, blogs, and virtually any kind of web presence. I had never heard of these people before but it looks to be an excellent service and reasonably priced. It is called Squarespace and can be found at: http://www.squarespace.com/home/ The on screen dynamic web-based design features are the best I have ever seen. I just though I would pass this along to anyone wishing to put up a personal website or blog. Regards, Jeff Wexler

Here is my daughter, age 9, listening with headphones on the Billy Crystal movie, "Memories of Me." Vanessa is 29 years old now and is having a baby due in November. I know this is not necessarily the place to get all misty and everything but this means a lot to me (so I posted it here). Best regards to all, Jeff Wexler

This from short L.A. Times article in the Business section. Who is this group that is singling out the sort of use of wireless that we do? "REGULATION Microphones may be banned The Federal Communications Commission is proposing a ban on certain types of wireless microphones and has begun an investigation into how the industry markets its products. Consumer groups alleged in a complaint last month that users of the ubiquitous microphones, including Broadway actors, mega-church pastors and karaoke DJs, are unwittingly violating FCC rules that require licenses for the devices. The Public Interest Spectrum Coalition accused manufacturers of deceptive advertising …

Members of the New York regional board also publicly challenged the assertions of SAG president Alan Rosenberg and chief negotiator Doug Allen that the union is holding inf…

No relation to me but I have often been asked if I am related to Jerry Wexler. I did have an uncle Jerry, now deceased, who was a very successful businessman in Chicago --- not the Jerry Wexler from the music world. From The Washington Post: The revered producer and Atlantic Records co-pilot - a music-biz legend who coined the term "rhythm and blues," then worked with some of the genre's greatest artists on some of their greatest recordings (and also worked with more than a few rock-and-rollers of note) - has gone to the great recording studio in the sky. He died this morning at the age of 91. RollingStone.com published a playlist of Twenty Essential Jerry Wexle…

I have read on the fostex site that 8cm disks in the square caddy from maxell are no longer being made. They were suggesting owners of pd-6 to buying bulk disks and square caddies. Dos anyone know where to purchase the 8cm doublesided or (singlesided for that matter) disks? I would appreciate the information. It would be nice to have and they would hopefully be cheaper.

Soul music pioneer Isaac Hayes – whose 1971 Theme From Shaft won the Oscar and Grammys – died Sunday in Memphis, where he lived. He was 65. The musician's wife reportedly discovered an unresponsive Hayes near an exercise treadmill in their home, and he was pronounced dead about an hour later at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. - Jeff Wexler

from CNET: "The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has concocted a remarkable new policy: It reserves the right to seize for an indefinite period of time laptops taken across the border. A pair of DHS policies from last month say that customs agents can routinely--as a matter of course--seize, make copies of, and "analyze the information transported by any individual attempting to enter, re-enter, depart, pass through, or reside in the United States." DHS claims the border search of electronic information is useful to detect terrorists, drug smugglers, and people violating "copyright or trademark laws." (Readers: Are you sure your iPod and laptop have absolutely no…

Check out my new blog, not that there is anything so interesting there yet, just experimenting and learning what can be done with Wordpress. I am finding that Wordpress is a terrific web-blog development platform with some fundamental differences from standard web site design. For me, one of the best features is that it is entirely web browser based --- once installed (you do need to have your installation hosted on somebody's server) all design work, structure, php, css, html editing, and all postings can be done from any browser on any computer with an Internet connection. With traditional websites, of course, you must have the design/structure/files app on your compute…
