To: DGC, DGA, ACTRA, SAG, IATSE, NABET Workers in the film and television production industry across North America are demanding an end to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions produced by extremely long working hours and extended work weeks. The damage to our work force as a result of work weeks that routinely exceed 60 hours comes in the form of industry wide addiction problems, mental health issues and family and relationship breakdowns in addition to physical health issues associated with overwork and lack of sleep, including diabetes, obesity, heart disease and cancer. These problems are real, and affect the daily lives of the men and women who are th…

I have seen numerous pictures of sound carts strapped to process trailers or camera cars and have always wondered why. My experience has been, #1, there is no room for a cart and #2, why? I have never needed more than two mics in a car and find that, once it is rigged, it is much more comfortable to ride shotgun with the camera car driver. Warm in winter and cool in summer. My boom rides the trailer wearing a comtek to track down squeaks and rattles and we usually plant a mic so I can hear what's going on on the trailer and to get sticks. I also stick a speakeasy in the car with a PTT so the director can talk to the talent. The hardest part is usually getting the enti…

Got an email from the UPM stating that they are starting some construction this month, and are working to start shooting n August. WHAAAAAAAT?!!! I always maintained that schools would be open before network shows started up again. But they’re not... Seems overly hopeful to me. I’ve heard about reality starting back up in my town, but August seems just crazy. With virus numbers going up due to a Deranged Cheeto who’s only “leadership” is calling for a civil war and all... It appears zaxcom.com has been hacked. I use the NoScript plugin for Firefox, so I don't know how it pulls up on other computers, but here's a screenshot of the header on the Nomad page (attached).

I have installed and activated an updated Tapatalk plug-in for our newly updated site. I don't really have a way of testing but we can only hope that it is working for our Tapatalk users. Remember, you may have to use your Display Name to login since IPB has dropped support for the older username/login name in favor of just the one name.

Do we want to keep it at the same place? It was pretty crammed this past year, and I have a feeling it is just going to keep growing with more people (which is great!). I like the fact that it is close to the convention center, though. Is there anything else down there that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Since no one else brought it up: In a surprising move arranged by prosecutors in Los Angeles and Washington, the authorities in Switzerland arrested the film director Roman Polanski late Saturday as he arrived at the Zurich airport, paving the way for his possible extradition to the United States in connection with a 32-year-old sex case. Mr. Polanski, 76, a French citizen, was detained as he arrived to receive an award at the Zurich Film Festival. Although he is expected to oppose extradition, the arrest raised a strong possibility that Mr. Polanski would be returned to the United States to face sentencing under his conviction for having had sex with a 13-year-old …

Los Angeles, Sept. 5 – The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts (IATSE) and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) announced today the ratification of a new Area Standards Agreement. The agreement covers 8,000 IATSE members working in feature film and television production in most areas of the United States outside of the Los Angeles and New York regions. The IATSE and AMPTP reached a tentative agreement on a new contract on August 24th, and the agreement was subsequently ratified by the IATSE General Executive Board. The new contract, which will run through July 31, 2015, includ…

I just heard that our very own Jan McLaughlin has won an Emmy for "Nurse Jackie". This is great and so well deserved. Whenever someone can get all the results, please post them here so we can celebrate all our good people who have been honored at the Emmys this year.

Many of you have probably already seen this in some form or another, but the IATSE posted this on Facebook this morning: "Congratulations to the crew of "Master Chef," who have won an IATSE contract with MPIPHP benefits! This victory on a major show helps to raise standards for folks working throughout unscripted TV. The resolve and solidarity of the crew on this show were strong enough to bring the producers to the table and secure a contract without a work stoppage." I, too, will be working on a unionized reality show beginning next week. I think it's time to discuss and believe that reality TV crews can and should be unionized. Facts seem to become very disto…

If you don't pay for a good audio person, your audio suffers. If you don't pay for a good pyro person, someone can get seriously hurt. This close call is unbelievable. And apparently many people on the set have not been paid and have walked off due to dangerous circumstances. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys…. http://badassdigest.com/2014/02/13/stunning-footage-of-a-movie-explosion-that-almost-gets-deadly
