Haskell Wexler has completed his documentary called "Who Needs Sleep?" which deals with the chronic long hours in the Entertainment Industry. The movie ends up saying a lot about our uniquely American cultural attitude towards work, making a living (and still having a life), insights into how people from other countries and other cultures seal with these issues, health and safety, and most importantly our families. This screening is in L.A., I know, so it really only applies to those who are local. The movie should be widely available when there is general distribution. April 4, 2006 starting at 7PM at 135 Doheny Dr. in Beverly Hills. RSVP for this event at: w…

This is from a site actually called "Treehugger": Scientists Grow Cheap Biodegradable Solar Using Tobacco Researchers at UC Berkeley have hacked tobacco plants to grow synthetic photovoltaic cells which can then be extracted and sprayed onto any substrate to create solar cells. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/01/scientists_create_cheap_biodegradable_spray-on_solar_cells_with_tobacco.php Perhaps a(nother) good reason to quit smoking.

From Daily Variety: SAG's moderate leaders to meet Sunday Guild members aim to revive contract talks "The moderate majority of SAG leaders will attempt Sunday to put feature-primetime negotiations back on track by trying to defuse president Alan Rosenberg's extraordinary legal challenge. The uncertainty over SAG's contract situation has been a factor in slowing down feature production. A below-the-line organization dubbing itself "Back to Work" has scheduled a 1 p.m. rally for Monday at SAG's Hollywood headquarters to urge the guild to re-launch negotiations. "The refusal to negotiate has gone on for too long," it said in a message in its web site at www.letsge…

Another musical movie, with Production Sound Mixer,Ronald R. Reise, "Rather than lip-synching to pre-recorded tracks, the performers all sang during filming to live behind-the-scenes musical accompaniment in the interest of maximum spontaneity and credibility" this is Clint Eastwood's first musical as a director ...note that Clint was a star in a musical film, 'Paint Your Wagon', along with Lee Marvin (and both sang in it!) Though Eastwood didn’t have the best of luck with musicals as an actor, this property ought to have been well within his directorial wheelhouse. As a helmer, he’s always had an astute ear for music quotes from Daily Variety and The Hollywood Repo…

This is from Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily: SAG vs AFTRA Scripted Primetime TV Series I had repeatedly asked both unions to give me tallies on how many primetime network scripted shows this next 2009/2010 TV season will be under SAG's or AFTRA's administration, and especially the breakdown of new shows since so much inaccurate information was being tossed around during the contract vote. Finally SAG replied. AFTRA has yet to answer despite PR assurances it would. 2009/2010 Scripted Prime Time Schedule (Screen Actors Guild figures) SAG 69% AFTRA 31% 2009/2010 Returning Series SAG 44 AFTRA 5 2009/2010 Pilot Pickups SAG 5 AFTRA 25 http://www.de…

If you have never been before and are so "fortunate" to be not working, NAB is a terrific event with more equipment on show under one roof (actually, several) and well worth effort. Go to www.nabshow.com for information. Many product introductions happen at NAB where companies show off new equipment. The new stuff is sometimes just non-working mock-ups that give us a look into what may be available in the future, but often the products shown are full production models that are shipping right after NAB. I saw the first Deva at NAB and that was probably 10 years ago. It was a funny looking little black box sitting on a pedestal with a cable coming out the back leading t…

Just reading in a Facebook post by Steve Maslow that mike Kohut has passed away. Here is a part of an interview by Mel Lambert with Mike published last year. Michael Kohut, during his more than 30+ years with the various entities that now comprise the Sony Pictures Studios' post-production complex in Culver City, CA, has done just about everything involved with sound for the movies. Starting in 1965 as a production-sound cable man with MGM, Kohut has worked consistently within the facility, remaining through its various transfers in ownership. During three decades he advanced to lead re-recording mixer, with over 50 credits, including "Basic Instinct," "The Pri…

The suggestion has come from Oleg to post personal pictures so that the rest of us can put a face to the name. This might be something that appeals to some but would rather be avoided by others... so, feel free to do as you please. I would be happy to see the faces of any of our members here (they can be posted anywhere but the Images of Interest would be a good place). Since he made the suggeston, and so he doesn't have to, I will post Oleg's picture. Regards, Jeff Wexler

Hey, Soundies - reposting from SoundDesign group - if I could be there, I would. (Also, I would enjoy educating my fellow filmmaker to the superiority of the sound of a boom . . .) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hi Folks, Producing a PSA for Lily's Fostering Hearts shooting Thursday and Friday, June 21 and 22, promoting the adoption of foster children. Looking for a sound recordists for both days. Is it pro-bono? Of course. Can pay some expenses. Looking for someone who has a soft spot for child adoption. Will not need a boom. It is just a two-shot so wireless is fine. Any leads appreciated. Many thanks, Richard McMillan Loca…

I am recommending Lunarpages web hosting service for anyone who wants to put up any sort of web presence whether it is a personal website, a blog, a forum discussion group like this, ftp or email service. I have been with Lunarpages for about 3 years now and the service and support has been terrific. There has been almost no downtime at all and the few times that I have needed some technical support, I have always reached a pleasant and helpful English speaking support person. I have recommended Lunarpages to lots of other people and have personally helped many of them to sign up for their web hosting. The union Local 695 website is now on Lunarpages after struggling for …

The story of that theme CBS always plays for The Masters Tournament in Augusta GA. I believe the year was 1981. Dave (Please Come to Boston) Loggins had arrived at my Bennett House studio in Franklin, TN to record a new song for the Masters Golf Telecast. I asked Mike Hanna, a great pianist and string arranger to join us as well as engineer Gene Eichelberger. Gene recorded our trio track in two or three takes and Loggins then put down the guitar and added the vocal. As we sat there listening Hanna offered to write a string quartet to fill out the sound. Loggins didn't really have a budget that could support hiring players to come to Franklin, but Hanna happily wrote…

Hi all, I went to China last year to shoot a 1 hour special for Discovery Channel Canada. We documented life in and around EUPA, which is a huge design and manufacturing facility that provides North America with small appliances such as The George Foreman Grill and many many others. I didn`t do anything special, sound-wise, but I did have the mini-Holophone plugged into the front inputs on the F-900 and I am curious to hear the results. You can see some behind the scenes pics on the link below, http://www.discoverychannel.ca/showpage.aspx?sid=17038 or on my Facebook page here- http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=60198&id=523646991&l=df6d60e11c …

I assume you do, how did you find yourself in audio? I just wanted to post this. If you need some new music in your life, here are 75 of the best songs from 2009 that you can download for free! And since "they" say that 80% of people that download music also buy it, I encourage this kind of sampling. It's also a great website about new music. http://www.saidthegramophone.com/ Here is the link for the 75 songs (it's about 300mb in a zip file) http://www.infinitemb.com/download/6424/STG_2009.zip/ Enjoy!
