I got a nice surprise with my spam this morning, an email from John Anderson letting me know that microphone-data.com has been resurrected and relaunched as Micpedia.com https://micpedia.com (Note I just typed that out - it's not working for me at least as a link, but should be easy enough for any of you to type/find) I haven't looked at it yet but the old mic-data was a very useful and much missed resource, particularly for comparing stuff at a glance (relative sensitivities between mics the like) and for vintage models. I hope this is as good, if not even better, and wish them the best of luck. Jez

Hi everyone, apologies in advance if this is not the right section for the post. Does anyone recommend or have any contacts of gear rental in Dakar area? Our checked-in baggage did not arrive. We have the essentials (camera, lenses, recorder, microphones, wireless, etc) but are missing things like booms, cables, accessories. Thankful for any tips.

I was browsing Ebay for some used gear and came across a post that seems a bit fishy to me. It's a full ENG kit with some older model letros, SD 302, boom pole etc. The poster didn't seem to know much in depth detail about the gear and the price seemed somewhat low to me. The listing location is in LA. Here's a link to the listing. Hopefully I'm wrong and it's legit!! https://www.ebay.com/itm/324466804066?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28

URSA has created a YT series called "what's in your kit?" and for this new one they met with my compatriote Stéphane Bucher during his prep for Ridley Scott's next project Napoleon. I found the video quite interesting and Stephane is very generous and open about his kit and choices. His lucky sound department has a team of 6 and a large sound van to make jealous most of us I believe 😅 Particularly interesting to me are his choices to deal with long distance set (eg. Dante with back up recorder on set for the radio mikes, but wired booms with an 8 ch multipair directly to his Cantar). Really worth a look even for experienced sound mixers.

Looks like this year the Academy has gone to just one category, Best Sound, instead of splitting it between sound mixing and sound editing. Does this mean that sound editing has been dropped altogether? BEST SOUND Belfast (Denise Yarde, Simon Chase, James Mather and Niv Adiri) Dune (Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Theo Green, Doug Hemphill and Ron Bartlett) No Time to Die (Simon Hayes, Oliver Tarney, James Harrison, Paul Massey and Mark Taylor) The Power of the Dog (Richard Flynn, Robert Mackenzie and Tara Webb) West Side Story (Tod A. Maitland, Gary Rydstrom, Brian Chumney, Andy Nelson and Shawn Murphy)

After much consideration I have decided to not do the annual r.a.m.p.s./jwsound party at NAB this year. I am still very concerned about Covid and feel that NAB and the party specifically, could end up being a super-spreader event. For me personally, at my age and overall health, I should not be risking being involved in that sort of gathering. Hopefully by next year things will have really settled down and we will be able to gather again without any real worry. I apologize to those who were looking forward to NAB and the party.

Started watching this doc and quickly noticed it is very sound driven over lots of repurposed video footage. Has anyone come across sound clips of some of this original footage to help give a good before and after comparison regarding the forensic cleanup? The cleanup of both video and audio seems to be very state of the art. Cant wait for the 16hr directors cut

The death of Halnya Hutchins on the set a few days ago made me recall several scares and close calls I had around guns on films over the years. Guns have been a part of movie making since the beginning, and the procedures for working with them safely have been around for a long time. As with "Rust", my bad gun moments were all on low-budget/high-ambition projects.... Anyone else?

Open Letter on Strike Authorization from Jeff Wexler I grew up in a union household. My father, Haskell Wexler, was a proud member of IATSE Local 600 for 68 years. Pop's commitment to union membership was not just shown in his belief in the common good, but also in his readiness to work for it. Pop devoted himself to many causes but none more vigorously than the 12-On-12-Off campaign he co-founded to bring awareness to the extreme dangers caused by excessive shooting hours. The 12-On-12-Off website makes this simple statement. "As human beings, we believe that every perso…

This morning, NAB put out this statement: "As we have always kept the best interest and safety of the industry as our priority, it has become apparent in the face of these challenges that we can no longer effectively host NAB Show or our co-located events, the Radio Show and Sales and Management Television Exchange, in person." Rest of the announcement: https://nabshow.com/2021/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2021/09/2021-NAB-Show-Announcement-1.pdf With luck, we can hold a JWS/RAMPS party next spring.

Drummer Charlie Watts, whose adept, powerful skin work propelled the Rolling Stones for more than half a century, died in London on Tuesday morning, according to his spokesperson. No cause of death was cited; he was 80. A statement from the band and Watts’ spokesperson reads: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family. “Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also a member of the Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation.
