sure, the uncertain SAG situation is affecting many of us, and we would like to have the SAG contract situations resolved, but that doesn't make it all trivial. there is plenty of blame to spread all around; kiik at the terrible IATSE contract being shoved down our throats! You figure that if IATSE gives in and takes a sh#tty contract, so should SAG?? even after all the internal shake-up's, the SAG BOD voted pretty decisively not to accept the AMPTP's LBFO. I doubt there is enough popular support for a strike authorization, but there is a lot of support for a better deal. in threads about the IATSE contract, there are a lot of folks urging "NO" votes and demanding a…

Well it's after 5PM and there has got to be some (bad) SAG news somewhere. Maybe it is tied in with Happy Hour and yes it is also St. Patrick's Day too. Fear not.....here it is: SAG, AFTRA members to strike? Unions pine for new commercials contract http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118001347.html?categoryid=18&cs=1 RL

"The Writers Guild of America West has notified its staff that it will cut at least 10% of its 185 employees as a result of an operating deficit of more than $2 million. The WGA West disclosed to members last summer in its annual report that its expenditures jumped 11% to $26.3 million due to the costs of negotiations and the 100-day strike, leading to an operating deficit of $800,000 for the fiscal year ended March 31 (Daily Variety, July 7). The membership and finance committee noted in the report that the deficit led to a decline in net assets to $31.5 million but declared the WGA West "remains in excellent financial condition." http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118…

"Pilot season is all over the map this year as the majors squeeze budgets and chase production incentive coin throughout the country and up north in Toronto and Vancouver. Of the 39 hourlong pilots and presentations that have been ordered by the Big Four and CW, at least 20 are skedded to shoot outside California's borders." http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118001296.html?categoryid=14&cs=1 RL

Actor and longtime political activist Ron Silver died at 62, this morning, succumbing to a long battle with cancer. I worked with him many years ago and he was a professional all the way. I'm sure many others here have worked with him as well. http://www.nypost.com/seven/03152009/news/regionalnews/ron_silver_dies_159710.htm One interesting observation: The web versions of The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times have no mention of Ron's passing. Exit question: Is that because after September 11th, 2001, Ron Silver became a strong conservative? RL

Just wondering how the economy has affected work for you? The technical term for it here in the Miami area is "it sucks" with the consenus of the day players saying it's off at least 50%-60%+. When the ENG & reality guys are crying the blues then you know it's bad here. Eric

Jonathan Handel explains: "66 out of 70 TV pilots this year will be shot under AFTRA jurisdiction, reports the Hollywood Reporter today. That’s 94% for AFTRA and only 6% for SAG. Meanwhile, I’ve been told somewhat different numbers that calculate out to about 87% AFTRA. Either way, it’s a 180 from typical figures, as I’m told that AFTRA typically has 10% or fewer pilots." http://digitalmedialaw.blogspot.com/2009/03/pilot-season-94-aftra.html RL

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/03/nyregion/03film.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&pagewanted=print March 3, 2009 A Plea to Keep Cameras Rolling in New York By CHRISTINE HAUGHNEY Even the film and television industry, one of the few fields generating profits in the throes of this recession, says it needs government help to stay in New York. At a news conference at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, dozens of film and television workers gathered on Monday to ask politicians to expand the incentive program offered to their industry in the past few years, not scale it back as planned. The program, which offers studios tax credits from the city and state for up to…

"For over 50 years, retired LA Police Officers have escorted, protected and monitored film crews within the City limits. These retired officers work independently from the Police Department. LAPD wants to take over by mandating that film work be done by active duty police officers on overtime work details. The LAPD is also attempting to force the retired officers into a uniform that in no way resembles any law enforcement uniform, making them unrecognizable as figures of authority." In my experience, the retired LA Police Officers of the "Film Unit" do an incredible job. The city's new proposal will definitely cost productions more money and will be a disincentive t…

I got the ballot in the mail today. I understand the terms, and I will carefully consider my decision. But there is no mention of side letters here. Doesn't the low budget agreement expire too? Do we get ANY input there, or is it just assumed if we agree to this basic agreement that we are on board with anything the international agrees to in side letters. This is a major issue for me, and want to know what it means before I make my decision. Will someone also help me with what this means for the Local 695 agreement. When do we see that? What terms have been negotiated there? Thanks, Robert

This relates to another thread of mine about the fickleness of producers who jump from one "State tax rebate" to another. The hit show was originally shooting in Toronto and moved to New York to reap the benefits of the New York state incentives. Now they are going back to Canada - but now to Vancouver. That will mean two complete sets of crews that J.J. Abrams has thrown under the bus to save costs and maximize his cut of the show. Variety reports: "After spending weeks on tenterhooks over the status of New York’s endangered production tax credit, Fox has decided to pull up stakes and relocate production of its hit frosh series “Fringeâ€ to Vancouver. The sho…

Payments Drag Out on TV Spots http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123535388745645241.html By SUZANNE VRANICA Some of the biggest advertisers in the U.S., including auto maker General Motors and brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev, are putting the squeeze on companies that produce and broadcast their ads, as part of an effort to rework contracts with suppliers to cut costs. As the economy's slump continues, GM has raised an uproar among the production firms that make its TV spots by playing hardball on payment terms. Other advertisers could follow suit, bringing pressure on the small companies that make up that business. Over the past few weeks, GM, whose brands…
