I'm not one to try and read tea leaves -- but a recent headline on CNET caught my attention: FCC cancels meeting for free Internet vote. This quote was even more interesting: "Existing wireless providers objected to the plan for entirely different issues. T-Mobile USA, which spent $4.2 billion in 2006 to acquire spectrum in an adjacent band, said that opening up this spectrum would cause interference and disrupt service, a claim the FCC says it disproved in October." Interference, disrupt service? Hasn't that been the wireless microphone community's same complaint? Read it all here: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-10122586-94.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=…

Details are emerging on the tentative deal signed on 11/19. IATSE members might pay special attention to the increase to 400 hrs for continuing health plan eligibility, the language regarding "freely negotiable" rates and terms, and no mandatory staffing ("Boom operator? We don't need no stinkin' boom operator..."). http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/details-of-amptp-iatse-tentative-deal/

My local (Barcelona, Spain) provider tell me Maxell or any other can't serve DVD-RAM anymore. I know we can buy them by mail in the USA or somewhere else (I hope) but just wanted to warn you about this, since it can be indicative of DVD-RAM fading away. Fernando

SAG to seek strike authorization Talks collapse between Guild, AMPTP By DAVE MCNARY In a move toward Hollywood's second strike in a year, the Screen Actors Guild will seek a strike authorization from its 120,000 members -- prompting an angry response from the congloms. SAG made the announcement early Saturday morning after federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez abandoned efforts to bring the two sides together, following their first face-to-face meeting in four months. Neither side budged significantly during two lengthy sessions Thursday and Friday with negotiators spending much of the time reiterating previous positions. Read the rest of the article here: http:/…

I heard that Boom Op. David Allen Smith died recently. I know he had been ill. Does anyone have any information? It would be a shame for him to be overlooked. He was dedicated sound man, and a fun and talented guy.

From Daily Variety: SAG brings in mediator for talks Guild hopes move will jumpstart negotiations By DAVE MCNARY In a move to jumpstart stalled negotiations, the Screen Actors Guild has asked that a federal mediator join the talks rather than sending out a strike authorization to members. SAG made the announcement Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the second day of its national board meeting. â€We hope mediation will help move this process forward," said SAG president Alan Rosenberg in a statement. "This action by the board demonstrates our commitment to bargain with the strength of our unified membership behind us. Economic times are tough for all American…

I picked up a note on the Deva User's group last night that told me that Zax have now upgraded the Fusion (via new Software, v5.50u) such that users can now run the machine as a 10 track recorder. The upgrade is FREE, and as a Deva 5.8 AND Fusion owner I can say it will be most welcome. This means that I can have the 5.8 bolted into the trolley, for the big grown up stuff, but that I can also have the Fusion in a bag ready to go for the runaround shots. No more pulling the cart apart for me when they need a quick up and past!! Nice one Glenn, Howy, and Zaxcom. Kindest regards to all, Simon B

I am posting full text of Macintouch's recap of what was announced today at the Apple event. Most significant for us I feel is that the lower priced MacBook (non-pro) will be much less useful in a professional environment because it lacks ANY Firewire port and no Express Card slot (so you cannot even add it externally). I am very pleased with all the things they have done otherwise and appreciate the insight into radically new manufacturing processes. from Macintouch: Apple Steve Jobs and his team presented new laptop products today at a typical Apple event for its invited members of the news media. Jobs and designer Jony Ive confirmed a new manufacturing process…

Obama campaign publishes iPhone app The US presidential campaign for Barack Obama has taken the unusual step of publishing its own iPhone application. The Obama for America app sorts and prioritizes a user's phone contacts, organizing them according to which states the campaign sees as "battlegrounds" for the election; people from Colorado and Michigan, for example, are listed higher than those from Texas or California. The number of calls made through the app is reported back, but the campaign claims not to receive any personal information. Other features of the app include Get Involved, which uses GPS to locate the nearest campaign office, and Local Events, which …
